iPhone 2010 sounds like a cool name actually :p

I reckon they'll do it like the iPods: change colours, shape (to a point), etc. but the basic design (in the iPhone's case, the large screen with the single home button with the square icon on it) will remain the same because it's iconic.

As for features? Who knows, Apple is unpredictable, no one knows.

I wouldn't like a OLED at the moment though because the technology needs to be improved.

A front facing camera would be nice, but let's face it, unless you're deaf, it will never be used after the novelty wears off.

Speakers don't need upgrading IMO but who knows?

Apple may make the bottom range iPhone (where the 3G is now) have similar specs to the 3GS and make the high end one even more powerful (depending on how much component prices are at the time).

More storage is almost certain.

I really hope it looks like this:

and that they install the glass properly so that it doesn't break the first time it's dropped from 2 feet. Add a flash for the camera too, and get rid of the chrome completely. Message indicator light too, por favor.

And I wouldn't mind them putting a Verizon logo on there. I'd rather have an iPhone with a Verizon and Apple logo on it that works everywhere than one with just the Apple logo that doesn't work half the time.

I think 2010 will bring minimal updates, the same way the 3G did. It will be the two-year cycle that brings the bigger changes. For 2010 I would expect a bigger storage capacity, maybe N wireless, stereo speakers, etc. The 3GS platform is fantastic and can be used long-term.

I'd really like to see improvements to the OS. Just keep optimizing it, adding new effects or designs. I think that is what 2010 will really be about - an improved OS with some of the Snow Leopard advancements.

How about enjoy the 3GS for a little bit before we discuss it's replacement already and it isn't even out yet.

lol
somebody is evidently not familiar with the nature of this site ^^

I think iPhone screen will not change; size, or particularly resolution. The size is a sweet spot, resolution's good, and there are simply too many apps to easily port.

But I think it's inevitable that the form factor will start to shrink around the 3.5" screen. Same with present MacBooks; the excessive bezels will give way to more compact devices, when technological advances facilitate it at a reasonable price. I'm thinking next few years.

Otherwise, gradual changes are likely.

It would also be sensible for Apple to VASTLY improve the GPS receiver quality.
Frankly, they can't sell it as a geographical Augmented Reality device until the GPS is up to scratch. And now, it is not.

Though the GPS is not fantastic for use as a TomTom or something (at least not with the Maps app anyway, not only because of features but because of accuracy), I have had no problems using orgmented reality (via the Yelp app) on it at all.

Surely there would be problems on apps like the London Underground one, where it uses gps & compass to point to your nearest station: if the gps is even 50m out, it would be totally wrong.

i think the resolution does look good, but by the end of this year, many of iphones competitor phones will have a much higher resolution. i think its possible almost probable that next year we'll see a resolution boost.

I can't speak from experience with the Underground app as I've never used it, but in general the GPS has been accurate at picking my location up initially, just not so good at following me or recalculating routes (in Maps) and stuff.

Agreed. I think it's quick because of AGPS, which uses wifi and cell towers to find you. It's quick, but inaccurate. After that, to be more precise, it uses GPS. This is where I have issues!

Seems that Apple often do things half heartedly, and get away with it.
iPhone's original camera
3G (& S's?) GPS
iPhone OS! Superb, but originally (and still?) lacking
MobileMe. Gracious, the ordeal of being an initial member! Thankfully (1) we got extended free service and (2) they've ironed out most issues. Though it's still a niggle that the iPhone Mail App doesn't have read message counts pushed. When you read all your mail online, iPhone will still display unread as like 3, until you open the App, forcing a refresh.

There are more, but now I ramble. Also, iLove iPhone ^^

So I seem to be seeing a lot of the same around the net: iPhone 3Gs isn't all that and a bag of chips.

I personally think the iPhone 3Gs is a decent upgrade; also a proper one for Apple. Why release anything more extravagant when the iPhone 3G is the current champ?

On topic now:

I predict the 4th version of the iPhone will use the Nvidia Tegra chipset and once again Apple will blow the minds of us tech enthusiast. It makes perfect sense if you ask me. If they don't use Tegra or something equivalent, the 4th iPhone will not stand a chance against... uh let's say maybe.... a Zune HD phone???

If you don't know what Nvidia Tegra or the Zune HD is, check it out!

Wow you really haven't read anything about the Tegra past the word Nvidia. I didn't know anything about it myself so I looked into it. Tegra uses the same ARM processor as the first iPhone and its claim to multicores is misleading, it refers to each part of the collective architecture as a different core. It only uses a single core processor and even if it had multicore, the Zune HD's CE Kernel does not support multicores. Tegra is based off tech used in the old iPods before Apple dumped the supplier company and a year later Nvidia bought their tech and upgraded it to make the Tegra.

Don't get me wrong the Zune HD has some nice features and Tegra does provide a lot of efficiency and less battery toll but the iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and Nokia N900 use a processor two generations above the Tegra.
Nvidia in this case is just hype.

Heres an informative albeit bias article with a lot of info:

Considering the recent media reports about new ARM technology, I'm expecting the computing power and RAM are going to be a HUGE step above the 3GS. The next version of the iPhone is going to be showing off it's computing power big time. I'm assuming that Apple will take full advantage of this by adding new features and software that will "show off" the increased processing power. I'm thinking that
Apple might even create a native app for augmented reality, perhaps tying it into the current Google Maps Street View

Best mock up I've ever seen. I would do awful things to get an iPhone that looked like that.

I hope they tweak the design slightly to make it even more sleek and sexy :D

I got a feeling the new iPhone will most deffo have wireless N capabilities and better camera (maybe with a flash).

I wouldn't want apple to go down the route of a hardware keyboard, as it will loose the "iPhone feel" on the iPhone.
Front facing camera? ..... I will never use it, I think it's completely pointless!

I hope apple introduce a whole load of new features with OS 4.0. One being a better way to organise the apps and maybe a Messenger service similar to the Blackberry

:apple: KrayzieKray :apple:

4gen iPhone needs flash support. (adobe)
More colors ( Like new iPods )
and FM radio

I didn't buy 3GS because those upgrades 3GS has, didn't impress me that much, so i hope that 4gen going to have those features i posted below.

Sorry for my bad english

I think Apple is gonna go big for 2010 and make it the most powerful mobile device in all aspects (mainly gaming, App store is a money tree for Apple).

- faster processor

- more RAM

- 32-64 GB of storage

- 5+ mp cam w/ led flash (no need for the avg. person to have a digital cam anymore)

- OLED

- 720p HDMI out

- Wireless iTunes sync

- New exterior design (If it's different, they need to make it look different)

- OS 4.0

Basically, it'll bridge the gap between all mobile devices (phone, GPS, digital camera, video camera, mobile gaming, mobile media).

Uh it's Down's Syndrome..

But anyway, I don't think there has been a major improvement since Apple went from Edge to 3G. The overall usability didn't increase from 3G to 3GS. I think Apple needs to go big next update to lock all of the 2G and 3G users into new 2-year contracts before Verizon rolls out their 4G network next year.

have you used a 3gs? I have had both, and the 3gs is much more usable than the 3g. When I had the 3g i had to buy a free memory app because I always had problems with apps crashing. Now I have the 3gs and i haven't had to open the free memory app once. I don't have to restart nearly as much, everything loads faster, there is a lot less lag when opening up apps and stuff renders much faster.

My prediction is that there will be a significant design change. They have had the same appearance for two models now and same basic form factor for the life of the iPhone. I'm not sure what else they can do as far as features goes other than improving specs but they need something next June to cause people to want to upgrade. I'm eligible for upgrade in March and I imagine there are a number of people like me who have had 1-2 iPhones already and are willing to upgrade but with no significant change in specs all they have left is appearance. I do like the mock up above and would upgrade for that.
