I think Apple is gonna go big for 2010 and make it the most powerful mobile device in all aspects (mainly gaming, App store is a money tree for Apple).

- faster processor

- more RAM

- 32-64 GB of storage

- 5+ mp cam w/ led flash (no need for the avg. person to have a digital cam anymore)

- OLED

- 720p HDMI out

- Wireless iTunes sync

- New exterior design (If it's different, they need to make it look different)

- OS 4.0

Basically, it'll bridge the gap between all mobile devices (phone, GPS, digital camera, video camera, mobile gaming, mobile media).

I agree and hoping the same, why I didn't upgrade and still have my 1st gen device since day 1 the iPhone was released. I hope it lasts until the next new device is released. Only thing killing me right now is no MMS support on 1st gen that I so feel they could support with a firmware update if they wanted to.

My prediction is that there will be a significant design change. They have had the same appearance for two models now and same basic form factor for the life of the iPhone. I'm not sure what else they can do as far as features goes other than improving specs but they need something next June to cause people to want to upgrade. I'm eligible for upgrade in March and I imagine there are a number of people like me who have had 1-2 iPhones already and are willing to upgrade but with no significant change in specs all they have left is appearance. I do like the mock up above and would upgrade for that.

well I wouldn't get your hopes up for a huge design overhaul. Probably the only things that you will see change design wise are the back of the unit, maybe the chrome bezel, and possibly they might add in another color, but I doubt it. The device will likely still look the same from the front, a screen and a round button. I don't see why people want such a different design so much when all apple would likely change is the back of the device (ala 2g > 3g) and considering most people put their iPhones in cases, does it really even make a difference? Plus when they change the dumb design you have to buy new docks, new dock adapters, new cases, etc. If it aint broke don't fix it, and the design is certainly not broken. A slight redesign would be really annoying imo.

And there are still a lot of features apple could give us that would make it worth while to upgrade. I don't know why people don't consider CPU upgrades to be real upgrades. I think there was a bigger jump in terms of usability from the 3G > 3Gs, than from the 2G > 3G

I'll tell you what I DON'T want first:

AMOLED/OLED screen. Reason? No production device has proven quality imaging in any sunlight direct/indirect. Products: Nokia N85/N86, Samsung i1770, i8910, and I forget the other. ALL suffer with poor readability for just a homescreen or pictures/video/phone call status/etc in any summer sunlight when outside. So to me the benefits of lower power consumption are non easily weighed when you've got the "backlit" (no real backlight but intensity of course) on FULL.

What I hope:
Increase capacity on whatever the proper flash is.
better file system management.
Finally some kind of multiple application running management similar to that jailbreaking app. Even if limited for say:
- 1 game at a time.
- only music first, then game so user listens to their own soundtrack OR API for games to use music library.
- maximum 5 applications to run at once. I've got 6+Yrs of smartphone experience on all platforms save for WebOS & Android and its average users only really use 5 applications running at any 1 time that they REALLy must have, others run but not necessary for longer than 20/30minutes. Loss of concentration and effective work */* time is used (*/* = divided by).
- user to set time to auto close apps after maximum 30mins-1hour (system force quits at exactly 1 hour if user doesn't have time set to same max or leaves it running without ever going back into it again. IMPORTANT: if user accidentally goes into app then time resets. BUT if its done after 30mins yet only for less than 1minute, then back out app is forced quite in 30mins. If its twice within 30mins and total time is longer than 1minute then auto/force quit is reset to 1hr. Fair??! Guess more research is needed.

* Faster 1Ghz ARM Cortex A9 with Mac OS X iPhone firmware supporting SMP!!! Faster cpu than 3GS, better power consumption than Snapdragon, more power for real world usuage.

* Apple to move into Audi, Bentley, BMW, Cadillac, Chevy, Ferrari, Maserati, and Porsche so that the iPhone 4GT can be the central GPS Navigation, Climate Control, Music Playback (via Amp of your choice), Video playback for 4 seaters, User saved seating/mirror/throttle response/traction settings SYSTEM! System can use iPhone 3GS/4GT cellular/wifi connection to make emergency call to Ambulance/Police/Firedepartment should a bad accident occur.
Heartattack API interface into iNike and Apple GPS chipset for when vehicular accident occurs and user doesn't respond (irratic heart rate, sudden calm heartrate/pulse/fading, body temperature rise/fall suddenly) you get the picture.
call it Apple iCONTROL! :apple:

* More gesture controls and a Video camera for video calls but MORE used for hearing impaired to make on device video calls to "sign-language" their speech to an online rep to relay it in words to someone on the other end that cannot A) see the user, B) communicate in "Sign-language"

^ VERY IMPORTANT since Apple is ALL about Universal computing!

Faster processer
More RAM
16 & 32 GB
Same style but with a black bezel or a much thinner chrome one

Hope it doesn't get any thinner. It's much nicer to hold than the iPod touch. I'd rather it was a bit smaller and chunkier.

It'll be a significant upgrade. I ordered that specially. :) My 3G contract is up next summer!

I'm already looking forward to June 2010, just because than I can look forward to June 2011.

I've got a big wishlist so you can think "So why don't upgrade of some of these wishes come out". Well, there are a few very important reasons for that.

1) My 2-year deal with T-Mobile, and that's since this June 2009.
2) The fifth generation iPhone will also have the things of the fourth generation iPhone.
3) Software update: I assume Apple is going to have iPhone OS 4.0 with amazing new features. A lot of people want to change phones maybe once a year, but with the iPhone there will be firmware updates with new features: because of these new features you can last longer with your iPhone.
4) I don't want to add another 2 year with my contract.
5) Technology is getting better: in 2011 there already may be support for LTE and/or WiMax. They will most likely also find a way for better batteries. Than we get to the new chips that companies like Intel are going to bring out in 2010 and 2011 which can handle much more power, which probably means better 3D graphics will come.

Scenario if I buy the iPhone in 2010
I'm sure the iPhone 2010 will have some awesome new things, but I'm also sure that it's possible for Apple that they are going to add some awesome new features in the iPhone 2011 because of new technologies. If I in 2010 sign-up for the iPhone 4th gen. than I'll for SURE miss 2011, 2012 AND 2013 (because with T-Mobile it's +2 years). In those years you can't get again an new iPhone (it just allows you once to add 2 years if you are still in your contract period). That means that I can get a new iPhone at it's earliest in 2014.

Scenario if I buy the iPhone in 2011
Well, I'll miss out features the iPhone 2010 is going to have but I'll get (at least, that's what I expect) a new software update with some awesome new features. If I buy the iPhone in 2011 than I'm again stuck with a 2 year deal, but if the iPhone 2012 is really really really awesome than I can decide to sign up for 2 more years. In this case I won't miss 2011 or 2012. In the "2010-scenario" I will. Of course I'll miss out the years later, but maybe, against that time it's time for another phone.

Only when T-Mobile has a veryyyy gooodddd deal to get on the new iPhone, I'll may do it but for now I'm just waiting till 2011.

And sure, I may get another phone but the iPhone is the best phone I've ever had. Just and only because of the easy to use software.

In all cases I can of course make a deal with someone who wants the iPhone. With T-Mobile you can "hand over" your contract to someone else. So if I still have one year to go, than I can sell my iPhone to someone and he will be stuck with the contract for 1 year. In this case I can buy a new iPhone. It's of course the question if someone wants to do this, because you see... contracts aren't really popular.

To make a long story short: I won't get the iPhone 2010 just because of my T-Mobile contract and the 2010 features also will be in the iPhone 2011...

:)

^^ might as well not upgrade until the '12 iPhone, but by the time that rolls around you might be better off waiting for the '13 iPhone....
