Due to an ageement between Tim&Vodafone, what was an already set price (dealers themselves had received informal notes about it),has changed at the approaching of day 19. They are pushing the iPhone on a contract basis (might be also Apple will),so you can buy it for as little as 69 euros signing in with them. Sorry for being caught by surprise myself,as well as so many others over here, here we all are angry and not sure who to blame more,Apple or carriers. ( if not both ). So prices are as you can see yourself on websites. There is a (very) slight chance that this time Hutchinson will get the phone and they always sell at cheaper prices, though I don't think there'll be a pre-paid with them. If anything it'll be on sale with a contract. Let's see what the future brings. It has been a bit of a shock to everyone, and the thing -is- that pre orders are doing well as far as I know!

Not wanting to detract too far from this thread that I've been following with interest ... but,

If you bought a UK O2 PAY- G 16gb for £440 (or other locked phone), and unlocked it (assuming we could) to run on say an Ornge sim etc, what problems and/or what would you loose doing this rather that getting the Sim Free / against buying a locked tarrif? What does Jailbreaking do and what problems would you have with ITunes and updates and Apps store etc (If any).

I like the idea of what this thread is about very much and would be in the market for one if all is well - but there are trade offs with buying from the EU (like buying one and then returns if there are any problems) but how do these trade offs outweigh unlocking an O2 locked one.

For example, Ornge have offered me a good deal on loyalty, if I get my own phone (O2 iphone PAY- G), and compared to O2 similar iphone tarrifs, after 12 months I'm £100 better off every 6 months. So at 18 months I'm £100 better off and £200 better off in 24 mths - but more so I just don't fancy swapping to O2! So there is a plus point - but what about unlocking, jailbreaking etc - what are the problems - convince me this route is better than O2 PAY- G, or O2 Tarriff etc.

Also, how soon will we be able to unlock the new 3G S?

 Confused ... Me ? ... Never !

I am interested in the 32GB version of the iphone 3gs and having done some mathematics my decison boils down to this....

Firstly, I have a great contract with T-mobile having been with them for 12yrs where I get 1000mins a month and free unlimited internet for £20/month. Equivalent from o2 would cost me £45/month...that is an extra £450 for an 18month contract in addition to £175 for the phone...so far £625... for a 24month contract that would be £600 in addition to £96 for the phone totalling
£696. Buying it from Italy at a slight premium unlocked, under warranty and available for all future updates would cost me no different apart from the inconvenience of sending to Italy if I have a problem and I keep my contract with t-mobile.

Hope that the devices are not locked to vodafone or tim networks only.
I have checked the prices in http://www.flaminiacomputer.it/ but they are awaiting the iPhone3GS by the end of the month. Any information about Apple store in Rome?

Those phones are lock-free with those prices (619e and 719e). Will work with any carrier. But tethering and MMS might not work if your carrier is not on the supported carrier list by Apple :(

You might be able to unlock the 3GS via ultrasn0w.

This is interesting. One wonders how many people would pay a premium for an officially unlocked model, when they could just go to O2 (at least in the UK) and pick up a PAYG model and software unlock it.

That said, I would be very surprised if the Dev Team have found a way to unlock the 3GS seeing as it has new hardware under the hood.

Thoughts?

The phone is unlocked in Greece. I bought the 3g in March with Vodafone, and as soon as I got home, I put my Cosmote carrier sim in and it worked fine.

Actually, the 3G with iPhone OS 3.0 is unlockable, but they state the 3Gs is not yet unlockable but they are working on that...

Apparently the Baseband of the 3GS is the same as the 3G on 3.0 - I think the question is whether they can Jailbreak it though.

I guess we shall have to wait and see!

I certainly don't think it would be worth buying officially unlocked models if this is the case.

Agreed but buy the time you buy from O2 then unlock and put in an Orange sim and start paying them for 3G/WiFi as well, the cost is much higher

How can you stunt growth when you already have (1) the lowest 3G handset penetration in the western world and (2) mobile penetration rate of way over 100%?

Because Belgian public is so used to just buying the handset they want and using with any SIM card - they just won't accept the locking of a handset to an operator.

Now the law has changed to allow cross-subsidisation meaning that the handsets can now be offered at a lower price which is clawed-back through a long-term contract with higher fees. Getting high-end devices on the market will improve the 3G take-up for sure.

But trust me, the operators don't care about the handset - the monthly contract fees are all they want and you can be sure that even without any traffic on that account there will be a healthy profit being made.

I don't think so. With MMS you can receive MMS from anyone on any carrier and sending is an issue of being supported by the carrier you are using.

A quick note to say I'm going to Italy to get a couple at the end of the month when stocks should be up. Anyone else who wants one can split my £300 (estimated) costs.

I've had mobile contracts but I refuse to buy locked phones. I got my 3G from Singapore, where it's also mandatory to sell unlocked phones. It worked with an Orange sim, but now I'm with O2 -- I think they're the only ones who do sim only (rolling 1 month contract) with unlimited web (with 600 minutes for £20). Good to know about the Italy option in case this ever breaks.

Is the iPhone 3G (actual one) support MMS. I have downloadede the 3.0 software but MMS doesn't work. I bought iPhone from vodafone Italy(unlocked) but i am using it on a different network that is not listed in Apple mobile partenrs (VIP from Austria)

Are you sure? Cause these € 619,- / € 719,- prices seem to be for the pre-paid phones.... Read the translated website...
At times,Vodafone puts on sale what they call 'Facile pack',which includes some extra accessories in the package. It had been listed on this carrier for about a day but it than disappeared from dealers internal note. So we do not know yet if,along with the iPhone itself, there will be this bundled one, which will be sold at a even higher prices, although i doubt it,as the cost has already gone up from what expected

Doesn't Hong Kong also sell unlocked iPhones? I seem to remember Engadget quoting their price, which worked out to about $900.

I'm really thinking of getting the 32Gig version from Italy as well. Think i might find a free day jump on the plane from London get to Milan or something then fly back in the evening. It will even be great if they have a TIM or vodafone shop at the airport. Saves me the hassle of getting into town to get one.
If there is anyone else thinking of make a similar trip let me know, im sure there has gota be one those cheap return flights you can book online or something. :)

I will be heading to Perugia on the 28th of this month - no costs to split but I will be picking up some 3GS's should the demand be there.

Is there anyone living in or near Perugia that can give an idea of stock? Currently, the TIM website is currently showing no stock for both models.

Any ideas my Italian counterparts!?
