wow, ok allot of talk from existing customers and one or two from potential new ones!

Ill be new to O2 and just popped into carphone warehouse and they will be taking preorders instore from Thursday. Also went into the O2 store and they wont be taking pre orders and selling them only on the day.

I'm in the same position as quite a few on here, purchased my iphone 3g last July.

I intend to sell my iphone 3g ( for £200 ), purchase a PAYG 3GS 16GB, and put my 3g sim card in it. So it'll cost £240, I think thats a reasonable price for a brand new phone.

I also get the benefit of not going into a lengthy new contract, and will switch to o2 simplicity with unlimited web bolt on at the end of my current contract.

£240 isn't an awful lot for a new phone; its just a shame you have to sell the 3g to get the cost to a reasonable price.

Seems pretty clear on their website to me - same cost to upgrade as for a new customer. Not sure why that's not a "clear upgrade path"?

Oh okay... so it says that existing customers have to pay out of the contract and then pay the "new customer price"?

It actually says thats what existing customers (that still have time on their contract) have to do?

I guess I just missed that.

ok just got off the phone, i was speaking to o2.

He told me that they don't know how much it's going to be to upgrade for any customer, contrary to what they're saying on Twitter.

He said to call back in a few weeks, I said well the phone is launching in a few weeks, customers need to know now really to make a educated decision. He said i don't know any more.

Shambles.

I think we should all ring o2 and speak to upgrades, dial 202 from your phone and then i think its 2 for upgrades orders, 1 for upgrades, 2 for upgrades or something like that.

Post your results here, lets try and get some sense out of them.

Yes, it's now the same terms and conditions for an iPhone upgrade as for any other phone on O2, because the iPhone 3G was subsidised whereas the original iPhone wasn't.

Yes but it doesn't really relate specifically to customers buying out the contract to upgrade. Just for people that are already eligible. See?

No, you're wrong... there's apparently a clear upgrade path on their website, as I've just been instructed on here.

Hey, if anyone is looking to sell their 3g iphone to buy the new 3gs, I would be willing to purchase the old one for £200. Message me if you are interested. Phone must be in perfect condition, ie no scratches, marks.

You'll be lucky, a marked one is still £300 on eBay, they dont sell the 16Gb Anymore either :p

Well Im confused as hell (it doesnt take much).

I have an original iPhone and my contract is up. If I upgrade to the 3Gs what will it cost me?

But doesn't everyone who wants to upgrade when they're not out of contract have to buy the rest of the contract out? So how is this any different?

I'm sure there were discussions just like this when 3G was launched but in the end you were able to just extend your contract by another 18/24 months and pay the same price as anyone else?

Don't know or care if that is gonna turn out to be right this time but I'm glad I missed out the last upgrade to 3G as my contract finishes the day before 3GS is launched!

I'll be 87 quid lighter from my back pocket but I can live with that, then I'll just miss out 4G and get 4GS the day that launches... Happy Days!!! :):D

My 3G has a vaguely wonky screen that works fine but there's some give in the glass and it's letting some dust in so I'll sell it it off to one of these mobile phone recyclers and put the cash towards a PAYG 3Gs.

Then at least I'm not tied into another O2 contract for 18 more months of shoddy customer service that has me ready to gouge out my eyes with frustration.

:)

I'm not wrong, o2 are wrong. They obviously don't really know, no one is singing from the same hymn sheet AGAIN!

thats exactly what I mean about the cluelessness.

I ring o2 again knowing I will get a different story.

She tells me to upgrade all I have to do is buy the new phone, i was like WTF!? Then she said, hang on i will just see if that is true. She puts me on hold then comes back to say, sorry i was wrong, you will need to pay the termination fee which is your monthly tariff x contract length remaining.

Doesn't suprise me. When I upgraded to the 2G I was told 3 different things I had to do to get my number transferred, by 3 different operators

I was expecting something like this but I'm a bit pissed off none the less. I said when they came out that I wanted a 12 month contract for exactly this kind of reason - besides which, how stupid is it being stuck to a phone for 18 months when it only has a warranty for 12 months.

O2 should have a reasonable early upgrade fee. Something like, if you've been with them for 12 months on an 18 month contract then you can upgrade early for a fee of £10 per month left on the contract. On a £35 or £45 contract the subsidy for the phone is only about £10 anyway. Had they done this then they probably would have had all the early adopters queuing up.

Then there's the other fact that Apple reduced the cost of the iPhone but O2 raised it. Interesting. This is where the need for a competitor network needs to come into play. It didn't matter too much when the phone wasn't subsidised but now we need some competition. When there was no subsidy, Apple controlled the prices. Now O2 do. As greedy as Apple is sometimes claimed to be, phone networks are 1000 times worse.

After how long on a 24 monther can we downgrade tariff?

I have no idea, but I think they'll make sure they get their pound of flesh, so to speak.

That is my main gripe as well.
I am ready to get another 18 month contract, but the O2 price for the handset, never mind the tariff, makes me think twice.

Want to recude your bills? - Theres an app for that .

Want to minimise you contract? - theres an app for that.

Want to go tell o2 to shove it up their arse - Theres even an app for that :D:D:D
