If you convert your contract (when the 18 months is up) to simplicity, and then 6 months later, the 4g comes out, what will the upgrade options be, anyone know? I am very hesitant to pay off my contract because it means I will be in the same position when the 4g comes out (which is very likely) in july next year.

I'm sorry if this is a really thick question, but is it possible to buy an unsubsidised 3GS?

I suspect they wont allow you to upgrade. It will probably be worth waiting for the next one. Which is what I'm contemplating now.

My Plan of Action

- Find £540
- Purchase 32Gb 3GS
- Sell 16Gb 3G
- Yay ^^
- Wait for contract to run out
- Go onto Simplicity with the Data Bolt On
- Next June Purchase new iPhone on Pay&Go
- Be Free from O2's Stupid iPhone Cycle.

Possibly a PAYG option, no price announced from what I can see.

PAYG prices here - http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/paygo.html

as far as i can tell still locked to o2, but as i said in a previous post the price of the 8GB iPhone 3G is the same as what apple charges for unlocked ones on its online store in HK, suggesting the pay as you go prices are unsubsidised despite the fact they're locked to o2!

Other than the PAYG option, you'd have to wait for countries which have to legally offer unlocked phones to release pricing. France, for example, has such a law. Depending on how much they charge for it, it might be better getting one from over there.

Yes, an unsubsidised 32Gb Pay & Go 3GS is £538.30. Details here

I called O2 and they confirmed that you can buy a Pay & Go and swap the SIM card with your 3G. You then continue your contract on the 3GS, so you don't have to start a new contract. Your 3G then becomes a Pay & Go, so you can sell it or pass it on to someone else.

Pay&Go includes unlimited data:

so perhaps:

- Find £540
- Purchase 32Gb 3GS
- Sell 16Gb 3G
- Yay ^^
- Wait for contract to run out
- Move number to Pay&Go SIM and use that
- Next June Purchase new iPhone on Pay&Go
- Be Free from O2's Stupid iPhone Cycle.

If you don't talk or text a lot but use loads of data then it could work out pretty well.

I saw people earlier in the thread mentioning if you went on the £40/month contract and downgraded after 9 months, you'd get to keep the same messages/call allowance. Can anyone confirm this, and why is it the case?

I really want to get one - I'm thinking 18 month 32GB option on £40/month is best option?

My current mobile phone contract has expired. So I'm a free man! :D

sorry if this has already been posted but CPW are offering £45 off from them

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/418594/new-iphone-3gs-32gb-538-30-45-cashb/

Havent read into it that much might be terms and conditions etc.

Looks like a good way to get in all the people buying at launch if ive read it right.

Be careful with this. It was £60 cashback last year and then they changed it to £20. What was worse was that everyone who had already signed up on the £60 (like me) only got £20.

I'd presume that offer stands for the current iPhone, wait and see about the new one.

Thanks for your answer. But at that price it's actually cheaper for me to buy out my contract and start a brand new one.

I Personally Hate Pay&Go, hate the messages you get when your low, how you have to have a certain amount of money on there to use your FREE data etc.

Also i will be selling my 3G With the 3GS Sim, should add some value as it will have 12 Months unlimited Data.

Except you will then be in the same position in a years time, 6 months to buyout

That's true, I never thought of it that way. If I had to buy my contract out twice, it would cost me a lot more. Plus if I let this contract run it's course, I'll have six months of a cheap contract. Umm decisions.

Is it possible Apple are trying to set a trend here. The 3GS is a fairly modest upgrade considering the only hardware that's been upgraded is the storage and a few speed bumps here and there and the camera. The rest is all software which I suspect would probably run on the existing 3G, but they have to justify the cost of the new one somehow, hence they limit video to the new one. I suspect next year we'll see a new design as by then the majority of 3G customers will be out of they're contracts, especially those in the US on two year contracts. Therefore will we see New Design in 12mths -> Hardware Bump 12mths Later -> New Design 12mths Later and so on? I know it doesn't quite work out for those on 18mnth contracts but O2 are trying to push two year contracts.

Long time reader, first time poster.

I have wanted an iPhone for a long time and my O2 contract came to an end late last year, however due to the rumours I decided to wait until the new version came out.

However it is now looking very expensive to us newbies. I like the idea of getting the 32 gig on an 18 month contract, which means I can then upgrade late 2010. This should mean that a new version has come out with 6 months of research time for me before I can get one.

£175.19 for the £45 monthly contract though (at least for 9 months) is really putting me off, even though I am able to afford it.

Now I'm thinking whether it's worth going for the PayG and Simplicity option and selling it next June in time for version 4.

Damn it! Why are things never simple!

I'm hoping that with artcles being written in BBC and Trusted Reviews etc (as well as the Twitter attack), maybe just maybe O2 will drop the price a bit.

I had been working on seeing if we could get these as work phones, but it looks like they want the HTC Touch Pro II or the Palm Pre instead.

I, like many others are now following the official Twitter account of O2 UK.
Ten minutes ago, responding to an inquisitive customer, they announced
that Pre-orders would not be available for the iPhone 3GS, in the UK.

Just thought I'd give everyone the heads up.
If you want one, you'll have to queue for it this year!

I wouldn't worry too much about queueing. Most of the people who would have queued aren't due an upgrade for another six months after all.

I'm still using a 2G iPhone on the O2 iPhone tariff, although the contract ran out one month ago. Just called the Customer Service and was told that, although I'm eligible for an upgrade, I'd have to pay the same amount as a new customer to get the 3GS. Doesn't sound credible to me. Anyone in the same position inquiried, too?

That's actually a good deal. Usually it's more!
