O2 should have a reasonable early upgrade fee. Something like, if you've been with them for 12 months on an 18 month contract then you can upgrade early for a fee of £10 per month left on the contract. On a £35 or £45 contract the subsidy for the phone is only about £10 anyway. Had they done this then they probably would have had all the early adopters queuing up.

Yeah well if it's £184.98 to a new customer I was hoping to maybe pay something like £300 to get the phone and "reboot" the contract. Would have worked out okay for me and meant that O2 would have got their subsidy covered.

Shame they can't meet us half way but I guess I did expect this.

The original iPhone price of £279 would have been fine for me. Seeing as, realistically, the original 8GB iPhone costs about the same as a 32GB one does now in terms of manufacturing), the 32GB one should be £279.

I really wish they'd never changed to a subsidised pricing structure. :(

It's a real shame they aren't doiong the same thing as last year. I jumped on the bandwagon in August so I can upgrade in Jan (according to my O2). I'd happily pay £184 or whatever for a new one, and start a new 18 month contract.

I guess it's just like the other phones now though. Apple need to ditch the networks and just sell by themselves, as they always should have.

Visual voicemail isnt worth all this bull-*******!

So let me get this straight, the 1st Gen iPhone was £270 unsubsidised, and the 3rd Gen top tier iPhone is ... £275 subsidised!

i was wholly and very logically expecting the iPhone 3GS to drop in at the old price points - £100 and £170. This makes the new 16 gig model more expensive than the previous one by £15. The old price points would have secured O2 another contract come the the time my current one expires in December. As it stands - no chance.

A thought also occurs that O2 will play the "normal" UK phone game with the new iPhone, as they do with every other handset, slowly reducing the prices over the next 12 months, instead of sticking to the price points that Apple must prescribe, to some extent.

Christ, all I want is an unlocked iPhone with a £100 price premium on an equal capacity iPod touch. Too much to ask for?

I won't get another contract with O2. Why? I got the original iPhone on contract followed by the 3G iPhone when it came out. I only did that because they let me end the contract early. But at £35 a month since then I have more then paid for my subsidised phone. So I will sit on the contract till the end, buy a 3Gs cash and put my current sim in that phone. Sell the 3G to recoup some of the outlay. When the contract runs out go to PAYG. I think a lot of people will do this. o2 are going to loose a lot of cotracts after all the hard work of gaining them in the first place. I want to be able to keep up with the models as they come out. Tying into another 18-24 month contract wont do that when I have now seen what O2's methods are really like. I bet there is another provider waiting in the wings to step in at this very minute.

Does any O2 sim card work with the current 3G? If this is the case, one would expect Simplicity to work with the 3GS?

Would it be possible to buy a 3GS on PAYG now, put your existing 3G contract SIM in it, and in December/January, take out a rolling Simplicity contract and use it with the 3GS. That way, each iteration of the iPhone need only be purchased on PAYG and just keep putting the Simplicity SIM in the new model. Would this be feasible?

Really annoyed...

not only do I, like many others have to wait till early next year to upgrade, however if we do upgrade then, apple will probably release a new iphone in June 2010, that means we are going to have to wait even longer, more than a year to upgrade. Might as well miss that upgrade, which is really poor as and unsatisfactory as an o2 customer

I've just been reading O2's prices, they have really priced out a lot of the young people who would have bought this..... This will really drive away a lot of people from the iPhone.

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/06/09/iphone_3gs_o2/

Not good in these harsh economic times. £73.41 a month for 24 months to get the iPhone S 32gb = £1761.84 in total..... sod that.

I'm going to either sit this version out, or bite the bullet and buy the 16GB 3GS on Pay as you go and switch to a Simplicity SIM when my 3G contract expires at the end of the year. That way I'm not tied into 18 month contracts when Apple's release schedule is only around 12 months! I've worked it out on another thread that it's around the same price overall (£40 more than an 18 month £35/mth tariff, £40 less than an 18 month £45/mth tariff).

O2 must be loving the iPhone, it's the only phone they don't have ANY competition for and can be as greedy as they feel they can get away with. Well I'm not going to endorse that so it's a PAYG model bought from Apple directly (so O2 see less cash from the sale), and a SIMplicity SIM where they'll go from getting £35/mth to £15/mth from me.

Hit them in their pockets, it's the only way they'll learn.

Will a Simplicity SIM work with the 3GS?

Will a Simplicity SIM work with the 3GS?

From what I've read online a Simplicity SIM will work in the current 3G, so I don't think it'll be any different with the 3G-S as it's not fundamentally different in terms of the OS etc. My O2 PAYG SIM works just fine in my 3G too, so I'm going to assume that the Simplicity SIM will work.

Yeah it looks like you can get 600 minutes and 1200 texts with unlimited web bolt on for £19.58 a month with a 1 month contract. That's basically the same as the £35 a month deal.

32GB 3G S Pay&Go - £548.30 + 18 months O2 Simplicity at £19.58 = £900.74 cost of ownership (with ability to upgrade at any time)
32GB 3G S Contract -£274.23 + 18 months O2 Contract at £34.26 = £890.91.

So, for £10 extra, you could have the ability to upgrade whenever you want.

Any O2 SIM should work in the 3GS so simplicity will as well. However we still have to wait 6 months for our contracts to expire on the 3G.

Come DEC/JAN 10 it's only 6 more months to wait for the iPhone Rev. 4. I might wait it out and not bother with a 3GS now.

Next iPhone rev 4: OLED, 5 meg camera, 64GB size, 802.11n etc.... :D

True but you could use the Pay&Go iPhone with your existing contract now. You have to pay the next six months of contract anyway. In fact, getting a Pay&Go one now and switching to a Simplicity tariff in six months would work out much cheaper.

top 10 of why its not worth it O2.

Roughly £185 or whatever for a new 3GS , and start a new 18 month contract, for a upgrade from a 3G.
So what are you getting for your money?
1- A video Camera=could buy a complete video camera cheaper.
2- New software= you can get it for free two days early.
3- A better Camera= 3megapixel wow we.
4- Faster lphone= How fast do you wanna go?
5- More Money for o2= as usual
6- More money for Apple= as usual.
7- A lphone= that looks the same as the one you have now.
8- Same covers etc= bang your 3G in your case no one will no the difference
9- Dont even think of you getting your lphone back from that waitress= sorry once its gone its gone.
10- it may still not impress your mates= wow you got a Palm Pre.

Could you buy a PAYG, swap sims with current 3g and sell current 3g with PAYG sim with years free browsing? That has to be worth more than just an iPhone?

Yes, this is what I will do. Either go fully PAYG (do they offer bolt ons for PAYG?) or go with a simplicity tariff. Sod this massive contract I am paying.

I am thinking I might skip this upgrade though.

I took this from the business section of the O2 website about the 3GS:

Upgrading to iPhone 3G

You might be able to upgrade to iPhone 3G when you renew your contract with us. You might even be able to upgrade if it's not renewing time but you've been with us over 12 months. You'll need to move to one of our current O2 Business tariffs if you're not on one already, add the iPhone 3G Bolt On and sign a new 24 or 36 month contract.

http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/business.html

so from what i understand, business users can upgrade and personal users cant??

I cant say im shocked by O2s behaviour!

Also sorry if this has already been posted!

*sad face*

Mental.

what's ridiculous is if you're on the simplicity tariff then you get over twice the texts as if you were on the contract tariff - but for only ten pounds more over 18 months! i was going to switch from orange to o2 to get the iphone that i guessed would be released at WWDC, but at O2's current prices I think I'd rather do without. i typically use 100-200 minutes a month and send 600 text messages, so if I just keep my current phone i can just pay £15 on a sim only tariff. it's true that means no internet or iphone, but it seems crazy that if i wanted to get the iphone 3Gs on contract with O2 I'd have to pay £35 a month just to get not even as many inclusive text messages as i'd even use, loads of minutes i won't use, and (unless i want to be tied into a 24 month contract - which i don't) pay £184.98 minimum for an iphone 3gs! i just can't justify that compared to paying £15 a month and nothing upfront to use an old phone.

given that current iphone 3g users will have pay to get out of their contracts (which makes sense), and so i expect not many of them will be buying the iphone 3gs, and given it's so expensive i'm not sure many people who were waiting for the WWDC before switching to O2, like myself, will actually go out and buy one, i don't think the phone's going to launch very successfully in the UK!

what's even more ridiculous is apple themselves sell the 8GB iphone 3G unlocked on the apple store online in Hong Kong for less than what O2 charges for the 8GB iphone 3g locked on o2 on pay as you go in the UK! i don't think the hong kong price includes any sales tax, but even so i'm pretty sure O2s pay and go price can't be subsidised - so it seems a bit rich they charge us that much for a phone locked to o2!

has there been anything officially said about o2 still having exclusivity to the iphone? i'm secretly hoping that other networks will have access to it, it's jut not been announced yet - though if that were the case, you'd have thought O2's prices would be a bit better!
