Just to confirm that upgrade-eligible O2 customers CAN upgrade in AppleStores. My upgrade in the Bullring store took about 25mins in total.

First time with an iPhone. Any clues on how you know it's activated? My Orange phone detects O2 coverage in the area if I do a manual scan for networks, so shouldn't be a problem.

Just got my 32GB 3GS white PAYG from O2. I was there at 8am and was 5th in queue of approx 20 people by 9:02am.
The O2 guys said as I was on contract they didn't need to top up my PAYG sim. Which means the PAYG sim is not activated. But he said this may change next week (when they worked out how ;) )

Oddly, I got there at 8.30am expecting maybe a couple of people waiting, but the shop was already open, and there was nobody in.

I'd called the day before, and they said they were opening at 9am.

I just got back from the o2 store in central York. I was first there (07.00) but didn't want to queue on my own, so went and got a coffee and came back to find two others. Sat watching cartoons with a couple of cool people on a laptop.

Very funny experience. Carphone Warehouse 200m up the street opened at 8am, and the manager came down and tried to poach us from the queue! We weren't having any of it. At 8.30 there were about 8 people queuing and he came back and poached 3 people! We knocked on the window and told the o2 guys, who went running up the road to try and get them back!

Came back without them and said 'sod it, we're opening!'. Got my nice 16gb 3GS and when he put it through the computer he tried to add the £5 a month discount from my current contract and it worked!

Fun morning :)

That was probably posted by someone in O2's marketing department trying to convince customers to use O2 ;)

I doubt it. 50 is nothing for the Apple store, and would indicated dismal failure for the 3GS.

The Regent Street store had a seven hour queue of several thousand people when the 2G was released.

Great, thanks. Did you get any idea of how much stock the apple stores have?

HOLY CRAP City Link woke me this morning!?! 08:00 they knocked the door, never moved so fast in my life! but its here :-D

Lucky you ... Ive ordered mine off CPW, its 'out for delivery' on CityLinks website so hopefully wont be long now ...

Also just a quick note that someone has said they are going into collect their iPhone preorder from CPW shop, they told me I couldnt do this and that it had to be delivered to the debit cards address  But one of my collegues should be getting his preorder from Wolverhampton store today, so I shall see if they let him when he turns up

Waits for CityLink ........

Well, no-one had an iPhone when the 2G came out so there was bound to be bigger queues. I don't think anyone was realistically expecting the turnout to be as big this time since most 3G customers would need to pay a huge amount to upgrade, so only the hardcore gadget freaks (or 2G owners already eligible to upgrade) will be getting the 3GS straight away.

Any chance of a bit more useful info Jon, like where you bought it and how big the queue was/what the stock situation was like? ;)

Ok all setup, in less than 10 mins, including getting the MMS activated message from O2.

Bought in Barnstaple (North Devon) from the O2 shop. There were 3 people in the queue when I arrived at 5 to 9 and 3 more joined as they opened the door at 9. Straight in, no hassle, a few more people came in and bought PAYG ones while I was upgrading my contract. I asked how long there stock would last (as my brother is going in at lunch time) and he said they have "plenty". They had a second delivery of them this morning. When I asked exactly how many he said "Tens".

Forgot to add.. When I ask the guy from my local O2 store how many iPhones they've got, he said they are not allow to say. But after a long chat it sounded
like they've got about 50 in all. Mixed between 8/16/32GB, Black/White. Some other smaller O2 stores near by may have even less. They got a feeling they will sold out the first batch by the weekend.

I better not give the location of my store just in case the nice O2 guy gets into trouble.

Got mine, black 32gb.

The line outside the 02 store in Leamington Spa had about 10 people in it. They started to serve people at about 8.50am which is pretty decent of them.

OK, I've now finished my coffee, and unwrapped the shiny new 32Gb PAYG iPhone.

Took the SIM card out of my old contract 3G iPhone, popped it into the new 3G S, plugged it in and launched iTunes.

The new iPhone activated virtually immediately!

It then offered to restore from my last backup, which I did. That took less than a minute, but didn't sync music, apps, etc.

Now sync'ing!

Got mine from the Apple store in Lakeside.. Opened bang on 8am with a massive countdown and all the staff cheering and clapping haha!
Lakeside opened its doors at 7am to allow queues but there were only 10 or so people in line at the Apple store, maybe 5 at the O2 shop 2 doors to the right and 1 person waiting for CPW to open..

Bought White 32GB and walked out the store within 8-10 mins.

I can't make it to an O2 store until tomorrow morning (Saturday). I hope they still have some of the 16gb in stock! :(

Don't suppose you asked about stock levels there did you? Thinking of popping in on my lunch for a pay n go.

Why would they offer it as an option when pre-ordering then?

I pre-ordered mine for collection from my local store. Turned up at 9am, no deliveries yet. City link say it reached their depot at 05.51 this morning... gonna try again at lunch time. Saw one unlucky chap trying to buy one there and then, and turned down for credit. Wish I'd risked turning up to my local store to buy one this morning tho, I would have one already by now :(

UK iPhone 3GS buyers get a great new much slimmer 3 pin USB charger plug -

Incidentally, for those worried about stocks of PAYG iPhones running out, don't worry. There is no distinction between the PAYG and contract models. Whichever you buy, it comes from the same stock. If you ask for PAYG, they give you a separate envelope containing the SIM and some instructions. The iPhone is set up for a monthly contract, so you have to change one of the settings manually to get internet to work on PAYG. The instructions are in the PAYG envelope.

Indeed, it's not like Apple have been advertising it heavily like before, as being the newest\coolest\easiest to use phone. Just because the queues aren't big I wouldn't say it's a failure, I don't think Apple themselves were expecting a stampede. If they wanted to push it aggresivley they'd have pushed O2 to discount it for existing iPhone customers.

Sorry, I don't see how that's relavent to my post, or did you just quote it by mistake?
