O2 are making some surprising claims about sales today, see here

Sales on launch day so far are higher than for the 3G. I'm amazed!

There is a perfectly valid reason behind this: they actually have some stock in of the 3GS!

Last year, they had the grand total of 10 units of the 3G in my local O2 store and Carphone Warehouse had 2! To say it wound the 200 people that had been queueing up outside for hours would be something of an understatement. I certainly lost my patience, as number 11 in the queue!

i hope so........
but some other dudes on this board on another thread are saying otherwise.
eg simplicity is capped at 200mb even with web bolt on.

For a PAYG phone user, with the web bolt-on they expect that reasonable usage is 200Mb per month:

The O2 Web Bolt On can only be used for web browsing on your phone and a fair use policy applies. But if your usage exceeds that of other users, which is normally expected to be below 200MB a month, you'll be charged standard rates for additional browsing. We'll send you a warning text message advising you to limit your usage before this happens, and a text message to let you know when you're being charged.

However SIMplicity is a pay monthly (sim only) tariff and there the terms are different:

The Web Bolt On allows you unlimited use of Telefónica O2 UK Limited's Edge/GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:
in, or connected to, any other device including modems;
to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing; or
in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.
If O2 reasonably suspects you are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges, impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission, remove the Web Bolt On from your account or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.

Not to mention their system crashing in the first couple of minutes, meaning all sales had to be manually processed, taking about 20 or so minutes

insurance

ok so I've got my PAYG 32 gig 3GS, and swapped SIMs with my contact SIM, as it recommends on the o2 site.

however o2 will not insure a phone with swapped SIMs. No probs I thought I'll just get third party insurance. However having read some reviews it's difficult to know who to choose.

Anyone got good/bad experience of customer service/making claims with 3rd party insurance companies.

don't mind paying a reasonable amount, just need a reputable no quibble provider.

I am absolutely furious! They’re delivering the iphone to my home address, not to the store nr where I work, which I specified when I ordered and which I had confirmed by email - and there will be no-one at home to receive it! I just spoke to some cretin from CPW on the phone and he couldn’t explain why they have changed the delivery address, and why no-one called to let me know. This means I wont get it today - despite having pre-ordered it 8 days ago to ENSURE I got it on release day! They offered to re-deliver it, on Monday, but I aint spending a weekend without it. So am going to the City-Link depot in person tomorrow to pick it up. I am SO hacked off right now!!!!

Chill - at least you'll get it tomorrow, some of us might not be able to get to a store to get one until next week depending on stock!

I will not chill. I planned this meticulously, having been waiting to get the new iphone since April when my previous contract ran out, and pre-ordering at the earliest opportunity. It should be in my hands right now. I've been so excited all week as I thought I'd done everything I could to guarantee having the phone today. I wouldn't have had a problem if they had changed the delivery address, if only they had let me know in advance. Sorry everyone I just needed to vent - which is most unlike me - because it is so frustrating :(

That is vital. So many insurance companies wriggle out of claims for the most spurious of reasons, which makes it pointless insuring with them in the first place.

So true. The one time I took out phone insurance I had my phone stolen. I fell asleep in the park with my girlfriend and someone swiped it (I was basically wrapped around the phone, I'm amazed they managed to extract it like that). I filed a police report, had several witnesses (they just thought it was someone I knew). Phone insurance company said I wasn't taking good enough care of my phone so no payout.

Do you have home insurance? Most home insurance cover personal property such as mobile phones. Alternatively, do you have a "premiere" bank account - you know the ones where you have to pay a monthly fee? A lot of them actually give you free gadget insurance. Considering they don't cost that much more than dedicated phone insurance and you get a hell of a lot more extra, you might want to consider one of those.

Don't worry, its only a phone! Unfortunately, chances are they won't be able to do anything about it now since it'll already be with the delivery company. Your only options are to get home before they try to deliver (if they try to deliver) or try to speak to the delivery company and see if they can deliver it to a different address instead. Some delivery companies are ok with this as long as the delivery would still be on a similar route (i.e. the new address isn't too far away).

...but don't forget that this often doesn't cover you for the cost of any unauthorised calls made if the phone is stolen, which can amount to more than the cost of the handset.

I am so impressed with the 3GS having had it for almost 4 hours now :) I did do a lot of reading up in the last few days but it has been so easy to setup. I've got apps installed, my music transferred, am transferring photos as we speak and have setup email and calendar syncing with my Google Apps account. The keyboard is a LOT easier to use than I had imagined it would be. I've had a hardware QWERTY keyboard for the last 3 years and thought that would be the biggest ommission from the new iPhone but I am amazed at how well I can actually type with two thumbs on the keyboard, even in portrait mode.

Google maps and the compass work really well together. The phone got an initial fix indoors within 10 seconds then refined it as the satellites kicked in.

I've even been impressed with CPW and O2. I pre-ordered the phone on Monday so had already paid for it and set up my account. I tracked my package online so saw when it was delivered to the store and went around to get it. When I got there, both assistants were serving customers. I waited 5 minutes and spent another 3 minutes paying for a case and collecting the phone. I got back to the office, fitted a screen protector, the sim and the case I bought then set about connecting the phone to my Mac. It connected first time as you would expect and activated in around a minute. Once that was done I setup all the syncing options and went from there.

I called O2 to give them my PAC code. I was in a queue for around 5 minutes (not a problem with the excellent speaker phone), which is impressive on what must have been a very busy day for them. When I got through I got my account passwords setup and gave them my PAC code. That all took around 5 minutes again which I thought was excellent.

I just called esure who provide my home insurance. My iPhone is covered on the personal possessions cover away from the home. I have £5K coverage which covers any item as long as it less than £1.5K in value. It might be worth you speaking to your household insurer to see if you are covered already.

The Halifax Ultimate Rewards Current Account offers several insurances for a monthly charge of £12.50:

Worldwide multi-trip travel insurance for two adults and all your children.

RAC car breakdown cover.

Mobile phone insurance for home and abroad if your mobile phone is lost, stolen or damaged.
Note: If it's a joint account, 2 mobiles are covered.

Card Care card protection for all your registered debit, credit, store and charge cards if they are lost or stolen at home or abroad.

Home emergency cover – from burst pipes to broken windows – 24/7.

£100,000 worth of travel accident cover – protection if you have an accident while travelling on public transport abroad.

Identity theft assistance.

Purchase protection covering the items you buy with an Ultimate Reward Visa debit card if they’re lost, stolen or accidentally damaged.

I'd call that really good value for money!

There was a bit of a queue inside Reading O2 store at 11am when I turned up, but I didn't have to wait very long. Although I did get the last 32GB PAYG phone they had apparently.

Finally got mine.

Updating iTunes...which is taking an age....I guess Apple servers are taking a hammering.

I had to got for the 16GB White in the end. I wanted Black but they had sold out. The guy told me on the sly I could always exchange it for a Black one within 14 days if I'm not happy. TBH the white is really growing on me. Its a bit more rare to see white ones. Also it will stop me picking up my sisters/brothers iPhones around the house which we endlessly do accidently.

I've just posted a sarky comment on the O2 DNC blog. I'm sure it won't get approved. ;)

Heh, me too. How do you like the taste of mine:

Perhaps the reason why you've sold more iPhones this time than last is that this time, you have more than 3 iPhones per store. You also have stock of the white iPhone which, this time last year, you were virtually denying even existed.

Oh yes, and your systems seem to be handling things this time, unlike last year where your systems crashed 3 minutes into that firesale ;)

I've been into the O2 shop today (didn't buy, personally don't think it's worth £440) but if anyone will a PAYG 3G wants to get a PAYG 3GS, go along with your PAYG sim card. If you do, you don't have to buy the £10 topup.

Got my 2 free upgrades from Apple in Bluewater, Kent. Whole process took 25 minutes. We have a 32gb black and a 32gb white one. There were no people waiting outside but lots buying inside. Free coffee, Ice cream and muffins from costa coffee. They said they had huge stock levels and weren't expecting it to be busy until tomorrow.
As stated on a previous post, in Bluewater there are 2 CPW, 2 O2 and an Apple store so anyone who goes there should have no probs getting what they want.:):)

Got my iPhone 3GS today. Arrived at Glasgow's Apple Store at 0750, number 19 in the line. Took more than an hour before getting my hands on the new toy though. Walked out also with a Nike + sensor =)

The thing I don't get is why Apple or O2 won't allow preorders for PAYG. Surely saves them manpower (in the stores) and saves customers' time?

Seems to be common, though in the 3-4 years of owning MMS capable phones I've yet to actually send a MMS message, so for me another day or so shouldn't be a big issue.

Yeah same , I called them like it said to in the text message I got after texting MMS to 1010, and he said should be sorted within 24 hours.

Also ... has anyone tried to connect their phone to their home wifi? Mine really kind of sucks at staying connected even though my macbook (placed right next to my iphone on the same wifi) has full bars. As a new iphone user, is this normal?

Picked mines up from the Glasgow store today at 3pm - seems as if they had plenty of stock. It was quite busy at this time though.

CPW seems to have drawn the short straw in stock levels...

O2 Reading claimed about 50 units of 32 and 50 of 16
CPW Reading opposite claimed about 12 units of each

My Barclays Premiere Life covers mobile phone calls.

The cost of unauthorised calls up to £2,000 (including VAT) per claim for Monthly Contract phones or up to £100 (including VAT) per claim for the cost of unauthorised calls on Pay-as-you-Go phones
