Just a heads-up about the BT Openzone service: you can only have 1 device's MAC address registered with the service at a time. This means that if you've upgraded your phone, the first time you try to log in to an Openzone hotspot it'll ask you to text "wifi" to 2121 to reset the device registration and allow you to log in with your new phone. No problem, you say, but unfortunately the reset process takes about an hour. This caused a brief episode of swearing and fistshaking from me at the airport recently when I wanted to use my 3GS on the Openzone wifi to kill 45 minutes before a flight...

Thanks for that - I'd noticed that since upgrading I couldn't access Openzone anymore. I'd guessed it was to do with the MAC, but thought I might have a long hard slog with O2 customer services ahead to resolve it, so I can live with a 1 hour wait ;)

Clearing things up

Can i just clear some things up for people in the UK as i noticed lots of posts about which sims work etc.

Any O2 sim will work in Any Iphone

Unless you buy a "unlocked" phone from the likes of play.com for 800 quid then your phone is "Sim Locked" to O2

If you have a Nokia or Samsung or any other phone and stick an o2 sim from it in your new iphone it will work, contract or PAYG it does not matter

If your Current sim is a standard Non iphone sim then you will need to phone O2 to get it setup for iphone, normally you will be charged 5-6 quid a month extra for the unlimited data plan that the iphone needs, but you will then get visual voicemal and the other extras <contract only>

Not all sims are the same, for example lots of people who have old phones and old sims do not have the ability to use 3G and you are limited to 50 contacts stored on your sim, please phone O2 and they will send out "FREE" of charge a new 3G sim which again can be used in any phone including iphone.

So in summary, PAYG sims are not able to recieve Visual Voicemail, Contract Sims are, if your on a contract on a different phone you can change over to a iphone plan for a small fee, maybe even get it free if you spend enough money.

Iphones are no different to any other sim locked phone, the only thing you need to remember is the iphone uses lots of internet so it's in your interest to get an unlimited bolt on.

Is anybody else out there still trying to get hold of an iPhone? I was undecided to buy one or not at first but have now concluded i want one. However my local Apple store, multiple 02 shops and multiple Carphone warehouse's have no stock whatsoever of the 16gb handset. I'm looking for a white one as well which apparently makes things harder! ...Becoming quite fed up of reading all the impressions and comments of how wonderful it is on here! :D

Stupid, useless O2 rant.

My daughter and I have just got back from my local O2 store. I was going to get an iPhone 3GS as a present for my daughter.

They said they did not need to do a credit check as I already have an iPhone, but then said that as I have had not had an account for long enough (3 months) or I have had a direct debit refused they cannot let me have another phone.

I have just upgraded from an original iPhone, I had a contract for 17 months (you can upgrade 1 month early) and never had a problem with direct debits (and could prove it there and then with my bank statements).

But they were not interested and would not do a credit check. That was it as far as they were concerned. I think that they had messed up in the early contract end and new contract start, even it was 17 months to the day but they would not check.

It was straight out of Little Britain - "Computer says no."

It was so frustrating knowing that I was not at fault but they could not be bothered to even try and help and my poor daughter can not have the present she wanted.

We desperately need another carrier in the UK, it will give Bl00dy useless O2 a much needed kick up the @rse.

16gig White PAYG Availability?

Hi guys,

I am hoping to get a 16gig white PAYG 3GS on Friday and was wondering how the availability is on that model at the minute? I see a poster above has had issues trying to get hold of one and the shipping on apple.com is "5 days". I would be looking to purchase from the Trafford Centre Apple Store but could get it from one of the O2 stores there or even the Apple Store in Milton Keynes if push came to shove.

only carphonewarehouse seems to have stock of 16gb phones at the moment

I spent all Thursday searching all 02 and carphone warhouse stores looking for a 16gb black 3GS

I gave up... and expected me to wait a month before they came back in stock.

Quickly went on the online 02 store. and they were in stock =D

Came the next day, i LOVE the iphone =D

I went to a Junkyard to find parts for my truck and a iPhone 3G was sitting on the floor of a truck. Someone got in a wreck and no one grabbed the phone afterwards.

My mates dad tried to get one this weekend. He spoke to someone in the local O2 store and was told they're not doing the PAYG iPhone 3Gs as it's still new and it's normally about 6 months before phones go on PAYG. Funny how his son has one though! Went on the O2 website and they're only advertising 32Gb on PAYG so not sure how you got yours DM.

So I checked the online availability for apple stores for the 16gb 3GS and it is not in stock in any apple store in the country. Which sucks. Guess I'll get on the phone tomorrow and speak to the store to find out when they might get some back in stock. Can't believe that every store in the country is out of stock of it, £538 is just way too much money for the 32gb I guess.

I have one question, can I buy an iphone 3GS without being UK resident?.

I'm from spain and I'm going to London next week in holidays, so I expect to go to a O2 shop, apple store, carphone or I don't know where, to buy and iphone 3GS in a pay & go plan.

I hope I can buy one without having a UK credit/debit card or making a contract.

A couple of questions for you knowledgeable lot....

Am I right in thinking the 02 simplicity taffif at 20quid gives you unlimited data? When used on PAYG?

Also coudl you tell me what visual voicemail and call merging are? These apply to the 3GS?

Really? O2 have always been great with me. There was a bit of a rigmarole when I ported my number from t-mobile to O2; I bought some boltons and had free allowances on a temporary number, then when my number was ported over I lost everything.

O2 stuck everything back on there, gave me some freebies for the inconvenience and even refunded the 25p credit I used to call customer services :D

The Pay & Go iPhones over here are locked to O2, so you wouldn't be able to use one of these in Spain.

You will need to purchase an unlocked one - you can get them on play.com but they are very expensive.

Or he could JB and unlock it himself??

I now that they're locked to O2, but as saldawop says I can unlock it with JB. (I had time ago and iphone 2G lcoked to AT&T and no problem with unlock)

So still the question is, can I buy one 3GS without being UK resident?

A quick question about the monthly O2 iPhone plans:

Is it possible to use my monthly text message allowance for international texts? The O2 information are a bit misleading, basically it is stated that you can use your free texts for any UK network and abroad...

Thanks for help :)
Dan

If you send a text while you are abroad it uses 4 texts from your allowance.
