my local carphone warehouse wouldn't sell me a PAYG iphone! they said they can only sell me a contract one. They showed me their computer and on the sales screen a PAYG option doesn't even come up - only contract so they said they couldn't do i.

CAn they do this? any CW workers here? I found this odd...

I'm not sure on the legality etc, but if you have an Apple store near you they had plenty of PAYG phones last week.

regards,

Greg

Maybe Carphone Warehouse don't have the rights to sell PAYG phones yet. I was told the same on launch day for the 3G S - contract only. I just went to the O2 store instead.

Same happened to me yesterday. They had 1 black 16gb 3 GS in stock and the guy said he can reserve it and then said it is for contract isnt it? And as I said i wanted PAYG he said he couldn't sell the stock on PAYG.
I don't see the difference, they get a lump sum up front. I guess they clearly make a lot more money from contracts than PAYG.

I'll check the apple stores and see what stock they have, never really thought about that to be honest!

CPW are selling one PAYG model online, I think they are choosing not to sell the rest yet.

I bought my PAYG from http://store.apple.com/uk.

Ordered it on the Saturday and had it by the Tuesday despite the predicted delivery date after submitting the order being one week later.

Order through www.quidco.com and get 3% (of the ex-VAT value) back. If you have not used Quidco before read the best practices section here first http://www.quidco.com/help/119 otherwise you may not get credited.

OllyW, thanks for clarifying that.

Do you happen to know whether it is the same charge for an MMS because I've just had a quick look at the tariffs and texting from, say Turkey (Eastern Europe), is normally 30p whereas a media message is 25p?

http://www.o2international.co.uk/standardrate_and_data.aspx#paymonthly

I think someone needs to check this with O2.

A MMS uses four texts from your allowance in the UK. I hope they aren't going to take 16 for sending one from abroad.

I recently gifted a 3G S to my girlfriend (in Asia with me now). She holds an O2 PAYG sim card back in London.

She will be returning to London in a matter of weeks.

She is located predominantly around Chelsea and Knightsbridge in London. She will need to surf, check emails, send occasional attachments on the iPhone. I'ld say that her monthly usage should be thereabouts 600MB - 800MB.

If she can tether her Macbook occasionally, that will be great, but it will not be a priority usage and if any, should be out of convenience rather than the norm.

I am unable to view the "Shop" section of the O2 website because I have a foreign IP address not native to UK, being in Asia now.

Can anyone kindly share their experiences of data plans and recommendations? I believe she is open to the concept of converting from a PAYG plan to take up a pay-monthly.

EDIT:

"O2 Web
£7.50 per month
Unlimited usage on O2 Active or mobile internet subject to fair use.
More about O2 Web

O2 Web & Wi-Fi for iPhone
£10 per month
Unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi to use with an iPhone only.

What is the difference between these two plans? If I take it literally, the difference in price is because of the wifi subscription to Hot Spots, but the mention of the iPhone confuses me. Most smart phones now have wifi capability, so does that mean the plan is restricted to iPhones only?

Web & Wifi would normally be two bolt-ons at £7.50 each. If you have an iPhone O2 will allow you to have a combined one for £10, it is only allowed on an iPhone. Wifi allows you to use "The Cloud" and "BT Openzone" public wifi hotspots for no futher charge after a one time registration with each.

O2 UK call forwarding costs?

I'm off to Madeira tomorrow and my wife is on Vodafone, which has free roaming at he moment.
Does anybody know if it would me to forward all calls to her phone for the week?
I'm only likely to get one or two calls but it would be handy, rather than switching the phone off completely (seeing as it costs a lot to begin with!)

Otherwise I'll be switching off data roaming and voicemail and if anybody rings, I'l just call them back from her phone.

Thanks,

Apologies well in advance, as I cant read through 100x pages of thread for soemthing that I'm sure has been said before..

This Simplicity thing...

Theres a lot of chat about buying the PAYG iPhone, then getting the £19 (or whatever) O2 Simplicity deal.

The Simplicity SIM offers web access and a fair amount of texts and minutes, but if you already get free web access without buying the Simplicity SIM anyhow, cant you just top up normally and get the same amount of other texts and mins for the same or less money?

I can see why, in a years time, once the 'free' web access expires, the Simplicity SIM offer will be good, but until then, why bother?

I travel to the uk quite often, and for that purpose i have a o2 paygo sim card i've been using for data and such. Now it seems i've managed to throw away that card, so i'll need a new one.

I guess you can't buy the iPhone Paygo sims separately (except for a high price on ebay (the one i found was £10 plus £10 in shipping)).

How much are just plain o2 sims in the o2 store or cpw? Don't need much talk time since i'll just be using it for data with the bolt-on..

I recently moved to the UK from the US. I bought a Pay and Go SIM as was told when I bought it that it would only cost 1 pound a day to use internet. But after using the internet all 10 pounds that I put on the phone were gone. Why did that happen?

I would guess they differentiate between mobile internet (WAP) that regular phones use and real internet on iPhone and the other smartphones, and that it's WAP that's £1 per day..

if i get a monthly solo plan from t-mobile UK, will that work with my iphone? will i be able to get 3g? i know in the US you cannot get 3g from t-mobile...

Guys, if I get an iPhone from Apple Online on the 27th, would I be able to expect it to arrive next week, going on the latest stock stats?

All UK networks use the same frequencies for 3G (2100MHz), their 2G services use either 900MHz or 1800MHz. The iPhone can deal with all these.

Last few questions before i buy

Hi,

Im a few hours from purchasing an iPhone 3GS on the £34.26 contract! Wooo, although i have a few last questions before i buy!

1. is the £34.26 including V.A.T or does that have to be added?

2. What internet is really included? i am going to be using the internet and email quite a bit really! on the site it says;

Unlimited UK Data and Wi-Fi

is this the same as the internet bolt on on other normal contracts?

Those are my main questions, also is there anything you guys would recommend doing, or anything i should watch out for or other advice?

Thanks
Kyle

Hi guys

Which operator do you think has better 3g coverage in UK (Warwick/Stratford area)?

And is O2 the only operator to offer mobile internet for £7.50 per month?
