Funny you should say this though, seeing as I started in this thread with reports of my Caudabe The Veil experience and how the quality was defective. Lopsided and rough on one side. So by my assessment Caudabe has already lost this argument for you; that the brands have superior quality control.

OK, so by your logic, if Apple puts out even one defective iPhone, then that means their entire quality control is crap, right? I've purchased a handful of Veils. All were fine out of the box, so you're wrong. Similar logic. See the flaw?

Well, we shall see what happens. I just placed an order with someone who is based in the same State I am in. I shall report back if there really is anything frightening about these generic Veils.

Same poor logic there, guy. For every anecdote you provide, another person can just claim the opposite. Neither disproves the other with such a small sample size. But since you seem to insist on proving me wrong, that's too bad, because my subjective experience holds more weight to me. In any event, common sense tells me that if someone is selling you something for way too cheap on a website known for bargains, then you probably will get what you paid for. But, hey, maybe you'll get lucky guy, in which case I hope it makes you feel great about yourself now that you weren't cheated out of $10. Go stick it to the Man and then go conquer the world! :roll eyes:

In any event, since you seem to have a bone to pick or at least must get in the last word, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that you'll come back here high and mighty after a few days proclaiming that you bought a knockoff with really fast shipping that's exactly the same as the Caudabe and the Spigen and that you were right all along. Amirite?

----------

Does anyone know of a thin snap on case like this that has more grip? I picked up the Spigen Ultra Thin and I am assuming it is the same plastic. I wanted this to protect against scratches but mainly for grip.

I have both the Caudabe and the Spigen and as far as I can tell they're made of the exact same material. I don't honestly think you'll find something this thin that provides grip. If you want grip, it sounds like you want something like a matte TPU type of case. Those are a little thicker, but the Spigen Air Cushion I was talking about is fairly nice because it's completely see through.

Any cheap knock-offs similar to Shumuri?

I wish. Not yet that I can find. The Shumuri is the only one that doesn't have the annoying lip over the curve of the screen.

I also look for the same thing. The TPU cases seem much thicker and yellow after time. I found some little stick on grippy things that look like transparent chevron patterns. You put them in a few places on the phone, so not ideal feel wise. But maybe some sort of tape or spray could make it more tacky?

You and that darn lip. Honestly don't understand why that's annoying - it's barely even there. Anyway, there's nothing special from a design perspective about the Shumuri. I'm sure there are already tons of the same thing out there on your favorite site, Alibaba. Just a matter of time before they make it to eBay.

This is the first interesting thing you've said in the whole thread. What exactly are these stick on grippy things? I've got the Spigen Air Cushion (if that's even the exact name, can't remember). Decent case, but I hate the feel of it. Just gets grimy with hand oil and dirt after a while.

He's not alone. This is the main sticking point for me as well. I have the Spigen Air Skin and the only thing that keeps it from being the perfect case is the extra lip. The new curved screen was designed that way for a reason, so that you don't feel anything in the way when you swipe on or off. I want a case that honors that. You may not agree, but is that really so hard to understand?

Ha, ok, point taken. I was the one preaching different strokes for different folks so I hear you on that. I suppose it's just because I'm sitting here with a Caudabe Veil on and have zero issues with what I perceive to be a minimal lip. And also because MOST cases have an even more pronounced lip, especially the thicker cases. So I personally don't see the issue. But, again, I can respect that others may have different preferences. I think perhaps I was just annoyed at him generally from his responses earlier in the thread and I was projecting that onto his preference for no lip. lol

I'm thinking if this ebay version works out, to give it a snip with some sharp scissors along the lip. This is probably a misguided plan though and I will end up destroying it by causing a furled edge. Still, it was only 3 dollars including shipping so worth the experiment.

But hit me up if you find a decent alternative to the Shumuri. It's very overpriced for what it is, plus they charge shipping in addition.

Here's a thought: Can anyone think of a reason why the fully covered bottom would be a negative? Particularly if the case itself is so thin, I can't imagine it would interfere with any of the connections, or attenuate the speaker volume. Who knows? Why do all these new case have an exposed derriere?

That's not going to work. You'll never get it looking straight, and the edge will end up too thick.

A better option would be to file it down with sandpaper. Start with a coarser grain to take off more material, then finish with a finer grain to give it a smooth surface. Obviously, take it OFF the phone first. ;) (Don't use a power sander or a dremel, either, because you won't be able to control it and it will just dig into the plastic. I've tried this before with other plastic things with bad results.)

I may try this with my Air Skin soon. If you do this, take some before and after pics and let us know how it goes!

Oh, and as for the closed bottom, yes, it can be a problem. Those who use the 30-pin adapter often can't get it to fit on cases with a closed bottom. With this one being so thin it MIGHT still work, but generally it's tough. It also interferes with a lot of docks like alarm clocks. My wife has to take her case off every night to dock her phone, because the closed bottom is too thick. Personally, I like having the bottom open for this reason. If I end up with a scratch or two on the bottom, so be it.

talking about the lip, I bought an Apple silicone case for my 6 + (waiting for Veil for 6 plus), and the lip gets in the way everytime I want to swipe from left to right to go back to the previous screen. I can't wait for the Veil for 6 plus.

Yeah. MOST cases I've owned have had a lip, a much bigger lip for that matter than what's on the Veil. I guess with super thin cases maybe some people have the expectation that the phone is supposed to feel like it has no case on it at all. Even then, I personally barely feel any lip to begin with on the Veil and the whole issue (or non-issue) seems a little silly to me (and to you, it seems). But I can appreciate that different people have different preferences. I'm happy with my Veil in any case, although I do find myself switching up between it and the Spigen Air Cushion (the thicker rubber case that is, not to be confused with the Veil lookalike, the Air Skin).

My eBay case just arrived. I am charging my camera, maybe later I can upload some pics. But for now here are some observations. The case is a stiffer plastic than the Veil. When on it is ever so slightly thicker, in that the camera ring is a tiny bit more hidden.

Sooner other good points are that it has a much higher friction grip feel than the Veil. It does not have any lip. The plastic stops at the aluminum break like on the Shumuri. Because it is a slightly stiffer plastic it feels more solid especially on the back where the Veil tends to float a little. Final good point: it was 5 times cheaper and delivery was quicker than the Veil.

The bad points. It has a more distinct join between the top and bottom half of the injection mould. On the left of my particular one you can feel the ridge as sharp, but with your finger nail you can scratch the ridge off. This implies it will be easy to make it totally smooth with a nail file or sandpaper. I will update once I have modified it. Also I just noticed an imperfection in the plastic as I look across one of the edges. It is like a slightly more opaque blotch. It seems that each sample will vary in this regard.

Overall pretty pleased. When I first looked at it off the phone I felt dubious cos it clearly is from a different factory than the Veil after all. But once it's on the phone it is clearly a much better case than the Veil. Particularly because the curve of the glass is now perceptible again and has a better grip.

Now just waiting for the cheap Shumuri alternative from Amazon.

Thanks for the writeup. Do you have a link to the eBay listing? my better half just recently thought she'd be clever and went searching for deals on eBay too. She found what looked like the Veil (which we both has for our 5S), but it turned out to be absolute garbage. The back had two small scratches, very faint but still there right out of the box. The button holes did not look like the ones in the photos and were slightly off center (although that's not a huge deal), and the case didn't lie flat against the back of the phone (THAT was a big deal). Hard to describe but it was like there was an air bubble inside. She contacted the seller and is still waiting on a response. If there's a better seller on eBay for these things, I'm all ears.

She did end up getting a Veil for her iphone 6 which she seems to be happy with. I'm still waiting for the 6+ Veil to come out, but surveying the field in the meantime.

Some photos taken with the phone, so no shots of it fitted.

First 2 photos, eBay is on left (http://www.ebay.com/itm/191286387539). The Veil is on the right
Next 2 photos order is reversed.

Edit. The ebay seller has upped his price 1 dollar since I bought it. So now its 3.99 including fast shipping (for me in CA).

i think i'm gonna go for the Veil instead of the Shumuri

a friend just received the shumuri, it's indeed very nice and well manufactured as first

but after a few uses of his headphones, the cut around the mini jack port broke

VERY excited to get my Veils, one for the hubby and one for me. We both used these as our only cases for the past couple of phones. The quality of the new ones is great. A lot like the ones we had before. They fit perfectly and aren't glossy so they don't attract fingerprints. Happy camper here!

You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. I had just ordered two cheap Amazon cases to give them a try, but I wasn't happy about the covered bottom. As others have said, it can be a weak point, and it can also interfere with docks, etc.

Unfortunately, I hadn't found one with no covered bottom and no lip, but with both your awesome writeup and your photos, you've convinced me. I'm definitely ordering this one. Thanks a lot!

By the way, it would recommend you use a nail file for the seam. Try to get as straight of an angle as possible so that you scratch only the seam and not the case. Work slowly or you could end up with a lot of scuffs. Good luck and let us know how that part goes.

Also, I found an eBay search that pulls up all the different colors for this case, and apparently there are several different sellers, so maybe you can find a better price.

If you have time, do you feel like uploading a few pics of the Ebay case? I already ordered one, but I just want to live vicariously through you for a few days.

Do you think maybe we have a serious problem?

Yes. I feel like there is a problem here. But then I could say that in general about the whole notion of a mac rumors website. It's madness for sure. But you could also interpret it as just another form of procrastination. Which is how I reconcile it when taking photos of my phones case at 2 am.

Anyway, because it's so dark here now I couldn't get a decent depth of field and so I used flash and only one photo came out. And because of the flash the scuffs show up more than they do in normal lighting. The scuff on the right is from me filing it. The filing was very successful on the whole phone, but when I did this corner I just got lazy and let it slip a bit.

I'm really liking this case. The grip is like sandpaper in your hands. It is not the most elegant feeling when compared with something smoother like the Veil, but when you are trying to keep a hold of your phone with one hand on a sweaty day it really is so much better. Plus the backing feels attached to the phone not separate from it, like the Veil. And finally, I love feeling the curved glass again as I swipe. It is like a smooth polished gemstone.

Right. Insanity over and out.

I meant to ask you. How's the fit around the buttons and such? It looks like it has separate cutouts for each volume button, while the Veil has one large one? That's a definite plus. The cutouts on my Spigen Air Skin seem a little larger than they need to be, probably because it was a pre-announcement design based on leaks, so I think they were hedging their bet in case the leaked specs were a little off.

I notice the Veil and some others seem to have much tighter cutouts, especially around the camera lens and such. Does the eBay case have pretty good ones too?

Yeah It's separate cutouts for each button. Pretty minimal in size though you wouldn't want them any smaller or you'd have to use the end of your fingernail to press the buttons. The Veil has just one cutout for the volume buttons. Both of them were a little sharp out the box. I have successfully filed that area on the eBay one.

The camera cutout is a little larger on the eBay one compared with the Veil. I was finding on the Veil that with the flashlight on, the whole top of the phone glowed. I think this was because the camera cutout was too modest. Also overall this case is thicker around the camera than on the Veil and so less of the aluminum from the camera touches the table.

That's interesting to note because I was thinking about getting a Shumuri for the Plus once they release it. The way I use my phone, I could totally see running into that same issue. I'll just wait for the Veil.

Yes, and this is even more of a problem if you use headphones with a larger plug than the Apple ones, which is pretty much ALL headphones. I learned my lesson with an old case that this is a constant problem. Now I definitely go for cases with an open bottom.

Ok, for all the people looking for an identical twin of the Caudabe Veil but costing only 5 bucks, I have incidentally stubbled on it following Vertigo's original lead for a Shumuri-a-like case. But instead it turned out to be identical to the Veil and nothing like the Shumuri, so I am correcting the erroneous link.

Here are the photos I posted elsewhere. This case has an exposed bottom unlike the product photos and has the exact same texture and lip around the screen as the Veil. My previous eBay search turned up a case that was found to be slightly thicker and with a rougher and more grippy texture than the Veil and also with a more minimal lip. But for those looking for the EXACT same case as the Caudabe Veil, you will find it at the following link for 5 bucks vs 15 for Caudabe's branded version.

Edit: I had an affiliate link to the product right here (there) but it turns out it's now out of stock. Maybe I will link again if anyone out there cares. (Probably not) Off to bed for me.

Just received my gray Caudabe Veil case. Awaiting the arrival of a blue Shumuri to compare.

The Veil is amazingly thin. Had to work it around the camera lens a bit. Started by putting the phone in at an angle. So thin that I wouldn't want to take it on and off a lot. Feels great in your hand. Very small noticeable edge on the curved glass. Not enough to bother me.
