I contribute money. And will continue to complain that my phone is not jailbroke

Wow. Just wow.

First of all - if you paid for tweaks and what have you, then you had a jailbroken phone. Nobody forced you to upgrade that, software or hardware wise.

It amazes me how people complain about this. If you think you can do better - do it. I'm sure you'll make everyone happy. And if you do, I'm sure you'll be pleased to know people appreciate your effort by bitching about you on forums when you're not quick enough for them next time around.

I do think that charging for the jailbreak will speed up things....

Why?

Because this will bring dedicated professionals at the scene. Right now it's a hobby and they treat it as such. They are in no hurry. But when it becomes a job, you get more responsibility and thus will probably be able to work faster.

Take ionic for example.... If this was a paid jailbreak he would be on this and HE can pull it off.

Exactly

If they were selling the jailbreak (forget about the legal implications for now) and making enough money off of it, they wouldn't have to worry about their day jobs and probably be able to put more time into it. That would result in a jailbreak coming out faster. That's just my theory at least.

That's assuming this collective WANT to work on a jailbreak all day full time which I do not think is the case,, given all their public comments about working on it in their spare time. It sounds like it's more of a hobby/sport for them.

Making jailbreaking a job would completely defeat the spirit behind it.

Plus it would lead to a number of issues, some of which I can speculate but not qualified to comment.

If there's good money in it then who knows. Maybe they might not but others would. As I understand it, a person can jailbreak their own device in ways they can't release to the public because of use of developer tools made by Apple.

This probably means there are developers out there with ways to jailbreak their own devices. If there was money involved maybe they'd be willing to work in developing a tool for public use and then we'd have this new group of people other than the usuals we're used to.

What spirit? Sure it might change it for developers but not for the end user which is us. I don't know if you like waiting for the "spirit" of it but I'm sure if this was made into a worldwide poll the majority wouldn't want to wait. I would love to be able to jailbreak from day 1 or at least not months till after a new version of iOS.

Cynics rejoice!

An iOS 7 jailbreak won't be released until 7.1 is. What's that you say? 7.1 is released? Well how does it make sense to release a JB when 7.2 is gonna be out eventually? Let's wait for that. Don't wanna burn an exploit.

7.2 is out now? Sorry no JB. We need to save that exploit for 7.3. But it's been a 6 months since the phone was released! We were told that a hole was found 2 weeks after it was released! There were pictures and videos of a JB. Sorry those are for us not you. We are incredible programmers and find these JBs but the exploits are too valuable to burn. Plus we have to write up a UI and all that crap.

Might as well wait until iOS 8 now. We have the exploit from the betas of iOS 8 just like iOS 7 and not all the patches have been plugged so expect a JB very soon after iOS 8 is released just as we said after right before iOS 7 was due out. Anyway, we hope you enjoy our yet-to-be-released iOS JB!! We'll keep you posted on our progress of not burning exploits.

they're just saving it for a more stable release of iOS 7. It would suck to have a device jailbroken on a version that is known to have bugs. At that point, you would contemplate between having a stable OS or the jailbreak.

For example, iOS 6.1 or 6.1.2 (iOS 6.1 had an extreme battery bug with exchange mail). Given that example and assuming only 6.1 was jailbreakable, would you rather be jailbroken on iOS 6.1 with a battery life of say 3 hours vs nonjailbroken with a battery life of ~8 hours?

Yes, you may not use exchange but there are people out there that do use exchange

I do believe they released the jailbreak for iOS 6. They didn't save it for iOS 7.

7.1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>7.04

A lot smoother and it will only get better.. this is coming from a 5S.

One thing that puzzles me is that there are many developers that can contribute as they have paid jailbroken apps and could help a lot in developing a lot of the tools. It is in their best interest. I don't know why they don't contribute further.

I'm guessing the fact that jailbreak developers who make the tools are usually in "teams" probably doesn't help.

In the Android custom ROM scene there are teams as well but they all help each other out for the greater good. It would be great if there was a similar system in place where people submit/share stuff to. The problem with that is it would have to be private so Apple doesn't patch anything. That would make developers weary of submitting anything in the fear someone might disclose some information and maybe get paid or some other sort of reward.

Writing a piece of software is different than finding a bug/exploit/loophole in an closed source OS

For example, sometimes developers release a version update. Sometimes they're buggy and the developer won't know what's wrong until they get feedback from users. From there, they'll try and debug the problem by closely looking at their code

iOS isn't open source so it isn't exactly that easy to contribute

I'm still a novice at C coding so can't say if that hunch is right

iPhone 7 jailbreak taking too long?

Skizzy, there will always be a next version around the corner but every new ios release will have bugs, some even critical. It makes no sense not to wait for a few revisions, especially now that exploits are rare and jailbreaks are quite difficult/complex to pull off (look at the technical details of evasi0n). Besides, we have no idea if they are waiting for a more stable release or simply not done with the jailbreak. I would guess the latter seeing as most of these guys have day jobs and even families occupying the majority of their time.

Being an app dev does not mean they have the ability or skill to contribute to a jailbreak. Many of these guys have backgrounds in security research. And the nature of jailbreaking does make it a secretive process. Like 3bs pointed out, there is a lucrative market for exploits. They are also gaping security holes Apple will look to quickly close.

They never said they'll wait for 7.1

The JB is not ready, neither is Cydia. Nothing to it.

Another 'cynic' not up to date on the facts

If you're smart you would have stuck with 6.1.2. Mostly sheeple that buy the new phone with new ios and complain about no jailbreak.

Seriously, some retailers still have ip5 with 6.0 on it... all it takes is knowing which ios is associated with specific barcodes on the boxes.

If you want a jailbreak next year, don't buy the new phone, dont upgrade your os, and follow the right individuals on twitter. It's not hard.

So much ignorance in this post.

I agree... some people really need a new/newer phone and the recent one sounds like the plan. Specially with the offers they give.

Anyways... Jailbreak used to take little time. Obviously Apple has stepped up their game so the jailbreak is a lot harder since there are a lot more hurdles to overcome.

Still... I am waiting, I am just one of the people that promote that this becomes a profitable business to the parties that can pull it off. That way we get our product.

People need to get paid for the knowledge really. You can't always expect free stuff.

That is it.

Noticed that Cydia has been rather quiet in terms of iOS6 updates / tweaks / themes / etc, hope this hasn't put the jailbreak developers off if an iOS7 jailbreak is released!

Actually I contribute to the developers of the jailbreak. I know it takes time, I don't bitch about it taking time, I bitch about my phone not being jailbroke on the current OS.

And you know facts? You might know what is put on Twitter and you know what is put on a blog, but you have no idea what is actually happening. Only what the devs want you to think.

Are you saying that the dev team is going to pump out a JB when they have it and won't necessarily wait for 7.1? Is that your impression?

I actually do believe what Saurik posts on reddit together with the technical explaination on Cydia and mobilesubstrate.
I actually do believe @planetbeing and @musclenerd when they post or explain in an interview that they think that they have all the pieces, but the community amplifies that.

Those guys have not once given out bogus information. @planetbeing even said that they didn't even have a proof of concept.

Every new firmware release has the potential of fixing the exploits they use, so it is a risk to wait. A release on 7.0 might be unwise but we are on 7.04 now.
iOS 7 seems fairly stable, so no use to wait, unless ofcourse you don't have a working JB, working Cydia or working mobilesubstrate......

All of the above can be found on their blogs/twitter/reddit.

Please show me where they said they wait for 7.1!

What software version should we stick with for future Jailbreaks. I upgraded to 7.0.2 and would like to know if it's best to stay where I am or should I upgrade to the newer 7.0.4
