My iPhone 7 screen was much more darker then my 6s on iOS 10.0.
Upgrading to iOS 10.0.1 did not change anything.
My brand new iPhone 7 screen looks like a cheap screen compared to my bright iPhone 6s screen. I'm taking it to the apple store

I got my 7+ on Friday and I have also been very disappointed with the maximum screen brightness. Visually, the brightest setting appears yellower and dimmer than my previous 6+. I could buy the argument that the wider color-gamut screen affects the display's natural white point, but I think the general consensus on this forum is that at least some of the 7 screens really are dimmer than previous phones.

People are right; 'brightness' is very difficult to qualitatively compare, so I pulled out a light meter and tested the screen brightness at 100%, auto-brightness off, night mode off, both on a blank notepad page. The 'silver' phone is my space gray 6+, and the black phone is my matte black 7+. You can't compare how bright the photos appear because they have different exposures, but I wanted to upload pictures of the results because I haven't seen anyone else post a quantitative comparison of the screen brightness.

Based on this somewhat scientific (but not very carefully controlled) test, the 7+ screen outputs about 12% *less* light than a 6+. I should point out that I did a test with auto brightness turned on and a very bright LED focused on the light sensor and the brightness of 7+ did not change.

Hi All

Apple uses two vendors for screens and have for years. One screen is a crisp, clear, beautiful display that has the ability to be 25% brighter than the past gen. The other screen has a yellow or green tint to it, overall, that will never change (not glue) and will always be less sharp, less clear, and less bright.

If you are comparing one of the inferior screens to one of the good screens on a phone from last year, the phone from last year will appear brighter. If you compare a yellow screen this year to a yellow screen from last year, it will look the same. We do have some reports of people with iPhone 7s getting the good vendors displays, and those are in fact 25% brighter then last years good panels.

So the bottom line is - if your display is "warm" color wise, and is not as bright as last years phone, you need to exchange the phone until you get one of the good panels, which are the screens Apple promised in the keynote.

There is no evidence supporting this that I've seen yet. Literally every single iPhone 7/7 Plus I've seen have the yellowish tint to them. I think the reports are from people not comparing them to the 6/6 plus or 6s/6s Plus side by side. It's hard to tell without putting the phones side by side and comparing them directly, so most people won't even notice the difference.

I have a feeling apple is going to try to brush this under the rug as "Completely Normal" so I might just be returning my 7 Plus.

Check some of the pictures in the threads, there are some clear white 7 screens out in the wild now. This happens every year, Apple has been using these same vendors for years. The good screens will return.

For what it is worth, I was at an Apple store today purchasing the apple battery case and the apple employee checking me out asked me how I liked my iPhone 7. When I mentioned that while I like it I have noticed that it is not as bright as the 6 and 6s, he looked over at his manager and didn't comment. He then mentioned that this is something they have heard and I guess are aware of. Not sure what that means, if anything.

Thank you buddy, this is great work! Quantifiable data rather than just theories. I've noticed that my new iPhone 7 definitely does not have the 25% extra brightness apple claims.

Just to add to the convo, here's my iPhone 7 next to the 6s:

There was a little sun, not bright, out for a moment so I put the 6S and 7 on auto brightness and took them outside. It does look like the 7 is a little brighter in minimal sun. I took a photo back inside but is too large to upload and I don't have time to mess with it any further now.

Thanks I'm not the only one here. My 7 is not as bright as my previous 6s (unfortunately it was already sold yesterday). I used my phone as GPS in my car. And today it was my first time to use 7 as my GPS. I could barely see it at maximum brightness level, under daylight. I have no issue with my 6s.

I just chatted with one apple representative. He asked me to reset then restore the whole phone. If no good, then asked me to go to the store to replace it. I hope they have some new phones with brighter screen in stock.

Anyway I just want to check how the others look like. If they look the same, I might keep this one, because "every pieces are the same". I don't want to add one more word "screen is darker than normal" when I sell this phone next year.

I have some frighten great news......guys I know the fix for this!!!!! I just contacted apple support on chat and Richardo helped me out. I had the same dim yellow screen like all your photos and post. I posted in here so you know I had this problem.

ANYWAYS the fix is to go into general -> reset -> reset all settings. The problem with the dim screen and yellow is from the transfer from backup (our old iphone backup) when we first got our phones. Something within settings. Just reset all settings. It doesn't delete anything.

Thank you guys and Richardo at Apple Chat Support

Come now, you don't think we have tried that? I gave your post a like because it worked out for you, it may for some others but I am speculating not for a high percentage of folks. And not me. :)

I set mine up as a new iPhone, not from backup.

Well it does screw up some things, I lost my Apple Music downloads to the iPhone 7 afterwards. Maybe it wasn't from doing a reset but I would not know what else caused it. Lost my credit card info for Apple Pay, had to input it again. And a few other things.

Glad it worked for you. I think the whole thing will be sorted out soon.

Hi guys,

German guy checking in. :) I have just registered to post this.
Recieved my 7 on Saturday. At first everything seemed normal and fine, but when I compared it to my 2 year old 6 I saw the difference.
Its pretty much the same as I saw in this thread, and a other thread called Yellow Gate.

I made a picture of the 2 phones with my DSLR at max Resolution.
7 on the left, 6 on the right.
You can clearly see that the 7 is warmer tint to my eyes also a little bit darker. Also, I think the Contrast is also less.
Sad to say but for my eyes the Display of the 6 beats the 7.
Where is the 25% more light Apple announced?
I cant see it. After watching the keynote and listening what they said about the new display, I though this will be a real killer. This is really disappointing.

Tomorrow I will go to my mobile vendor store and check if they have 7s for testing and if yes, i will compare the screens of those to mine. If they are better, I will claim exchange.

Greetings

I went to the Apple store today and all of the IP7s(including plus) had a slight yellow hue to them. I don't mind this if Apple has decided on a warmer tone across all IPhone's, the problem is to my eyes either my 7 is defective and isn't putting out enough light or changing the hue to a more yellowish tone appears to the human eye as lower light.

Regardless I'm going to swap it for another phone on the last day of my 14 exchange/return period in hopes of avoiding another 'launch' phone.

I'm not worried at all about the screen being slightly warm, all apple devices in the past have been slightly too cool (refer to displaymate) with a white point around 7300K. What I'm worried about is the brightness. If there is in fact a discrepancy between the stated 625cd/m2 typical brightness as stated on the apple website then we definitely have an issue on our hands. Even the 6 and 6s rated at 500cd/m2 exceed their rated measures reaching around 550cd/m2 easily.

Does anyone here have a photometer that can measure in cd/m2?

Really interested to see what happens about this. Maybe a little software update this week perhaps?

Not sure if this will work for everyone but I tried it and my 7 plus is MUCH brighter. Worth a try at least!

went to att store today and they only had one 7 plus on display, with warm gamma. 6s plus next to it had nice whitish display which also was brighter. My 6S was also brighter. I was disappointed since 7 was supposed to be brighter.

Yeah I did the reset, didn't help much.

I will say, despite the problem, the screen LOOKS amazing. I'm not sure what else they changed, but everything looks a lot cleaner and sharper.
