Even if one sees a 6s that is the same brightness, I think Apple's website states that it will be 25% brighter.
Yep! I hope that is not the same thing that happens with my AW. I have the current one, and I have the new on on order. I would love a brighter screen for the AW, and would be really disappointed if it's not. I really never struggled with my 6s, so was just a bonus that it would be brighter. Though Apple claiming and it's not kind of bothers me. It makes me think something is wrong with either the software or the hardware. I wish this thread would get big enough.

This is bad. And it seems like the bottom right is worse than the rest. I'd be ok with a warmer screen but look at how much darker the 7 Plus is.
I have booked the next available Genius Bar appointment on Thursday. I'll take another picture on Wednesday to see if there is any change. If I see improvement I'll cancel my appointment. Otherwise this is going back.

Keep us posted, and let us know what the Apple Store says.

Those thinking of going into an Apple Store, what do you hope to accomplish? If you want to straight up return it, yeah sure. But if you want to do an exchange, it's just gonna be the same thing on the new phone. Might as well wait a bit to see if it improves or if theres as software fix which seems very likely to be the issue.

I think people are just looking for confirmation that something is wrong. If they tell people to hold off and wait, then we will know. Also letting Apple know there is an issue might be a good thing. Just a thought

So, just played some Deus Ex Go, only about ten minutes but I saw the brightness drop, went out of the game and after a few seconds saw the brightness jump up several times. It's pretty clear to me now that this design can not cope with the heat it's producing and is therefore overheating and lowering the screen brightness, this combined with the yellow screen means I'm definitely exchanging this for a 6s and putting the £200 saving towards a Watch series 2. I do hope they don't screw up next year.

I posted several posts ago that I spoke with apple tech support about this and they offered no help aside from resetting the settings on the phone, which I had already done. So, I presume that going to the Genius Bar will result in the same. Perhaps you can return it or swap it out for another ip7 (if they have replacement already). I am sure Apple is aware of it, but the issue is not that prevalent enough. One thing that I have continuously mentioned in this thread and others is Macrumors lack of awareness or sympathy for this matter. They love to post countless little articles guiding us on how to use ios10, but nothing yet on issues related to the ip7.

Anyone else having issues with your screen not getting bright? My 7 is super dark and I have turned it up all the way, and it's still very low. Any thoughts?

So I thought I was the only one but clearly there is a mass problem. I got my phone on Friday and it was noticeable from the get go. It was more warm / yellow like identical to the many pictures posted in this thread.

I just got back from a genius appointment and basically a phone replacement. Genius dude clearly saw it was yelllowish but i compared it to my 6 and it was a world darker. When asked he mentioned nothing about firmware setting, or glue myth etc tough he said he wouldn't act surprised if its an OS bug.

Now here is the best part which makes me believe more it maybe. I got home with the replacement and I can clearly see its much brighter then my original 7 but still bit more tint yellow than 6. The replacement was running 10.0 but i restored from cloud and upgraded to 10.0.1 and guess what, it looks just like my original. The only kicker is the phone is running hot now restoring cloud images, syncing music etc. So i'll compare it later when cools off.

Reading this thread from start to finish this really has a liking of a OS/Firmware bug vs. hardware. I even compared few floor models and same.

Thanks

Especially considering the 14-day return window.

My girlfriend was composing a text today on her 7 and the brightness jumped up several times. However, it settled down to the lower level again. She was in bright sunlight and she was ticked because she could barely see the screen. However, when the brightness jumped up, she could see the screen fine. She was taking photos outside as well, and she had her 6s along with her. The display on her 7 was too dim to use well, but she took pictures with no problems on her 6s.

So the software update made it dim again? Hmm...

I have a noticeable difference between the background (while is dull and dark) and the icons which are much brighter. Is that supposed to be the case? So odd.

I am not suggesting the genius is going to do anything but a return or exchange if they have them. What I am suggesting is get the awareness out there. Hopefully if many of us complain, Apple can quickly fix the issue or at least give an explanation. I don't think any of that is unfair to ask of Apple. It's clear there is something not right about the display.

And we'd all like some reassurance of an upcoming fix from Apple since we're staring a 14-day return window in the face.

Yep could not agree more. If this is something they plan to fix, then we can hang tight. If these are QC issues or just the way the phones are going to be, we might need to return them.

Jesus Christ. I just turned up the brightness all the way in my 40w lamp lit room. My eyes are still recovering from the solar flare.

iPhone screens have been too bright for me since the iPhone 6. Recently I found two Assesibility settings that decrease the screen brightness by at least 50% past the lowest setting.

Zoom > Zoom filter > low light
And Display Accomendations > Reduce white point

You don't have to actually zoom in to decrease the brightness, but zoom must be enabled. Pair these two with the "Ask Me" on the triple home click and night shift and it's like you're reading in candle light before bed time. No more glaring phone in my sleeping partner's face!

I was going to purchase a LG G5? a couple of years ago and everything was great but all the reviewers started mentioning how dull the screen was. I went to a Verizon store and tried one out and sure enough it was dull. I did not buy an LG. Bad things can happen to screens. Looks like Apple has a big problem, but of course Apple will not admit it has a problem until the townsfolk storm the gate with lanterns and pitchforks.

Sure, sure.

I just spoke with an Apple Support Tech and showed him pictures of the issue. He compared his side by side with an iPhone 6s and said he could see the difference I was talking about. I asked him to forward the info to the appropriate people so that this can be looked into.

I have the 7+. My brightness is fine, no issues there. I've noticed that Auto Brightness doesn't do well in dark situations, though. My 6S does better when comparing them side-to-side. Likely a software issue...hoping they can correct.

For what it's worth, my 6 Plus drops to about two-thirds of full brightness when it's under load, and after about ten minutes pops back up again to full. Not sure if this is what's happening to the 7's, but it's not the first time an iPhone has had a little trouble with screen brightness.
