I've been having periodic problems with MAIL, in that it sometimes will not connect to server, whether I open mail acct or hit RELOAD key.

The only option is restarting the iPhone

The problem lies when I notice this as I am sending mail. Since it does not connect, the mail goes nowhere (and since there is only a SENT folder) the letter is forever lost.

As such, I am losing sent mail.

Any others w/ this problem

Yep - me. No idea how to fix it. Basically the device is unusable to send mail when it switches between 3G and wifi or where 3G signal is patchy. It doesn't seem to be able to rate a weak 3G signal against a strong Edge one - and so it seems to just fail. It's ok to receive mail, as long as you are willing to restart the mail programme several times, losing any items unsent as you suggest.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Iphone (before the weirdos crowd in) but the idea of this as a blackberry killer without significant improvement to the mail functionality is frankly laughable.

Microsoft word problem

Everytime i try to send an email from 2 of my 3 accounts on my iphone , the email app crashes and puts me back on the home page.

Also Microsoft Word opens everytime I plug my iphone in to my laptop.

I am experiencing the same problem with word opening everytime I sync my iphone with my laptop. Any suggestions????

As mentioned before -

Cant send SMS's to more than one person.

If sending SMS's in 'chat' mode, no time stamps on messages.

No log kept for all calls and sms's.

Be able to turn dictionary off in SMS's and notepad or be able to choose words so that the iphone recognises that word and doesnt correct it.

Cant send photos in messages.

Cant send photos or messages via bluetooth.

MP3s as message tones?

My service will drop out from full to nothing in 5 secs and then 30 minutes later will be ok. OR will say no service and when i go to ring someone anyway it restores signal. BUT if people try to ring me, they cant and it takes ages for voicemail to come through.

Thanks hope all get fixed

Must restart iPhone when switching from WiFi to Edge

Whenever I leave a WiFi network, I need to restart my iPhone in order for it to start using the Edge network again. Five bars and the little E show that I am connected to Edge, however, without the restart, the iPhone simply doesn't connect to anything (Mail, Safari, Contacts/ActiveSync Directory search). The little circle spins and spins, the phone heats up, and the battery drains quickly from there as it continually attempts to negotiate network access.

Once I restart it, Edge is back to normal (meaing painfully slow, but working). I jump on Wifi several times a day, so I am restarting my iPhone several times a day. This started happening recently, I think with either the 2.0 or 2.01 udpate.

iPod waking problem

When I'm playing a song in the iPod and press the sleep/wake button, the screen goes black and the iPhone locks as usual. But sometimes, when I hit the home button or the sleep/wake button and "slide to unlock", the home screen comes up instead of the iPod, which is annoying because I'm usually only waking it up to change the song or something. This is a relatively new development - it used to go straight to the iPod after "unlocking" every time I woke up the iPhone.

sometimes when i check out the voice message.. it turns dark so, i press the circle button to bring the sreen back. but it stays in dark mode until i press like 4-5 times... i had this trouble very ofen.. does anybody expreriece this problem ??

I pointed this out in a separate thread, but no one replied, so I'll put it in here too. :D

The keyboard behavior between landscape and portrait is inconsistent. In portrait mode, when you go to the number board and hit the apostrophe it will automatically jump back to the qwerty board. Also, again in portrait mode, if you hit space while you are on the number board it will automatically switch back to the qwerty board. Neither of these situations work in landscape mode. This is on the US english keyboard.

This isn't a major bug, just poor programming, it should be consistent. Its a pain in the neck when you are used to one and then try to use the other.

Can anybody confirm that I am not crazy (with regards to this issue, I know I am not clinically sane, thank you)? Also, I don't know if this a new 2.0 thing or not. I never really used to use landscape mode, but when I started trying to I found this to be an annoyance.

Since 2.0.2, I've been having all types of issues! Grrr..

- Sluggishness everywhere!!!!!!
- Random crashes/freezes

The responsiveness of the old software is what made the iPhone so awesome and smooth. Now, having to deal w/ this "lag" is really irritating.

2.02 bug fixes?????

does anyone know of any plans to fix the bugs that happened with the 2.02 update? other than turning airplane mode on and off. rather than list them (as i've done before, mail death, 3g call dropping, etc., fine before the update) i just want to know of any progress before i start bugging apple about it which sounds like tons of fun from what i 've heard. i've been fine with ignoring it, (and other smartphones havent been perfect either), but the dropping calls thing really screwed me today. help!

also curious: what's the diff. between turning airplane mode on and off and turning wifi on and off, which i've been doing all along.

ay carumba

Yes, yes to both last comments. Sluggishness, blank screens, and airplane off/on constantly. 2.02 worst yet.

I've noticed this too. I have restart my phone at least 4 or 5 times per day. Sometimes even when I turn it back on the mail STILL does not come in. If it does work after restart it stops after a couple hours..very frustrating.

Smart Playlist bug

After a very frustrating day and a half of troubleshooting, I believe I have discovered a bug with the way iPhone handles smart playlists. I am using an iPhone 3G (firmware 2.0.2, the latest as of the date of this post) with iTunes 7.7.

My symptoms were as follows: I have setup four smart playlists, and configured iTunes to sync all music and playlists to my iPhone. During sync, all of my music would sync -- and would subsequently play -- correctly. However, my playlists would not appear on the iPhone. Strangely, iTunes would show them present on the iPhone (under the "Devices" hierarchical menu), and when browsing the playlists from within iTunes everything seemed to be as it should be. If I deleted a playlist, the corresponding songs would correctly be removed from the device. In essence, the iPhone was reading the contents of the playlists, but would not display the playlists themselves. Very odd.

I attempted multiple restores of the iPhone and contacted Apple support, who had no idea what the problem could be. Regular playlists -- those of the non-"smart" variety -- would sync fine. I reinstalled iTunes at the behest of Apple, which was a futile exercise.

Tonight, though, I finally found the problem. In each of my playlists, I've used the following modifier: "KIND IS MPEG AUDIO FILE". I did this, of course, to limit my playlists to only music -- but as soon as I removed that modifier, the problem was completed solved and smart playlists are once again showing up on my iPhone. I've also verified this behavior on a second iPhone 3G -- my wife's. Can anyone else verify this problem?

Airplane Mode bug

BUG: My iPhone (non 3G, but with latest 2.0.2) will be laying on the table and every 5 minutes or so - it lights up to wallpaper with a message that says, "This Accessory does not work with Airplane Mode Do you want to turn Airplane Mode on?" And 95% of the time, the message goes away before you can respond, but it keeps popping up! It is draining my battery and I don't even have PUSH turned on. This is my 4th iPhone due to other problems, I hope this can be fixed and I don't have to go back a Genius Bar a 5th time

totally weird: as of friday, all newly acquired 2.02 bugs (mail not reloading, dropped calls, not finding signal, very slow browsing, slow in general) just disappeared as if by magic. everything is even speedier than it was to start with, the 3g network flies, and it seamlessly switches between wifi and phone networks. i didn't do anything different. Just suddenly it was fine. anyone else experience this?

Huge Syncing Issues

I have the original 16G iphone and have loved every moment. But, since the updates, the problems are endless:

completely downloap apps but when go to use them, immediately takes you back to home screen, even when purchased through itunes on my mac

syncing iphone takes FOREVER.....continually is backing up and installing items one by one that have already been installed/loaded

BIG BUG!!!!! iphone will NOT sync my music. All of my songs have been erased. Cannot under any circumstance load them, even when trying to sync just songs. But on the memory meter on the bottom, it shows the songs still in iphone memory. I have completely removed all my applications, erased and restored my phone twice, installed it as a new iphone to my mac, all to no avail. I miss the way the phone was before the updates.

Can anyone help?? My iphone was my ipod....ughhhh!

Try double clicking the home button. That should pop up a music control panel that you can adjust volume, pause, review or skip your music.

I don't have the iPhone, but I have a 32GB touch. My problem I just notice before updating to 2.0.2. I usually listen to my iPod at work on shuffle. From time to time I like to listen to a full album (ie: Live album) in order which was never a problem. Then just a couple of days before I updated it started playing everything on shuffle...:confused:WTH. I've rebooted, looked for some kind of hidden settings, updated to 2.0.2....NOTHING. My last resort will be to do a complete restore  which I would like to avoid.

Application Failure to Launch

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

whenever i try to open some applications( especially the book application) the application frequently quits to home screen. It is the same with Safari. Some times when i try to open some HTML files on book application the
whole iphone freezes and i have to reboot it.

HA! I am not alone!

There are numerous applications on my phone that appear to launch - ie., I get to the "welcome" screen of the application, and then after a short delay I find myself back at home. I've tried reloading the affected applications - no help. I've tried resetting the iphone - this helps sometimes, but not always. What the heck is going on?

voicemail default greeting

I've recorded my custom message with visual voicemail but it's always followed by the woman's "please leave your message after the tone". I thought it was one or the other? Called Rogers, they say there's nothing to be done. Anyone else?

Basically, when I call my iphone from a land line, my voicemail greeting is:

My voice: "Hi, you've reached wordnerd30. Please leave your name and number and I'll get right back to you." Then as I'm waiting for the beep, the default message woman says "Please leave your message after the tone." And then there's the beep!!

I am answering my own post here for the sake of others.
I left the phone on a for while (white screen), and clicked the power button (turned black, then white again). They iTunes wanted to restore again, and again failed. After maybe 10 times, I now have the Apple logo on a black screen and iTunes says it is restoring the iphone software.

Hope this helps. My guess is that some process had to quit inside the phone, so it took a while.

Problems updating iPhone apps directly on phone continue with 2.1

My problems with updating current apps (error this app could not be installed, it will be downloaded through itunes..) continues but I did find a partial workaround.

If I initiate the update on my iphone it fails, but leaves the icon for the upgraded version. If I then delete the old version from my iphone and click the icon again it completes the download and installation without error.

The downside? It deletes any application settings or data you have on the phone. Not big deal for some apps but a big loss with others.
