Upper left, Hhmmmm! As I take my 3g 16 gig away from my ear, the screen comes up for a second, then goes black; put it near my ear and it comes up! Attempt to look at it (take it away from my ear) it goes black again. The home button becomes completely non-functional. Only the sleep, wake, on off will do anything. Usually, as yours, you loose or never are able to answer the call!

Take your iPhone, put it in some pretty direct sunlight, and hold it at varying angles. You'll discover the proximity sensors, which are those three red dots. See the image below (ignore the circle on the speaker, dunno what that's for.) When your fingers cover these, they don't get light...and hence the screen switches off, partly to conserve battery, but also, assuming that the phone is up against your face, to prevent onscreen buttons from being inadvertently pressed.

In theory, if you avoid that upper left part, you'll be fine.

Help, help! Calls going directly to voicemail

I just got an iPhone for Xmas and I'm having a problem with some calls going directly to voicemail. It's not all of time and there doesn't seem to be any way to predict it. Since I keep WiFi turned off much of the time, it shouldn't be an issue.

I've spent maybe six hours, if not more, troubleshooting this with AT&T and iPhone and it hasn't been resolved yet. We've tried the following:

Soft reset
Hard reset
Redoing the portage of my old T-Mobile number
Checking to see if call forwarding was an issue
Test calling when the bars were at levels 4 and 5
Testing my SIM in a Blackberry
Testing the Blackberry SIM in my phone
Replacing the SIM in the iPhone with a new one
Other fixes too numerous too mention

I have about 2 weeks to swap my phone before the 30 days are up.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Others have posted about this issue on the Apple support discussion forum but no concrete answers seem to be out there.

Any ideas or suggestions?

not my iphone....if ur gonna help me can u please email me masterd33392@yahoo.com

The most disturbing thing about this post is NOT that you bought a stolen iPhone off the street, but now you're trying to solicit help from legitimate users on the net. Why would anyone help you?

I've got a bug for Apple

When you try and play a music video along side regular music, turn the screen off using the sleep button at the top the video stops playing till you hit play again. But if you play a song before that video (heck even scroll to the last 5 seconds of the song lets say) the video still plays while the screen is off.

Drives me nuts that I cant just play a video along with my regular music playlist turn the screen off and have it keep going where as if I start off with a song it works just fine.

I noticed on two HTML mailing list emails that I received (Constant Contact) would not display properly. Only the left half of the email in the body displayed, and the right was blank, cutting off all graphics and text. The footer, however was displayed properly across the entire screen.

Strange.

This is confirmed on my end too...

Drives me nuts too. Pretty retarded to not fix such an issue....

Almost any program from App Store are crashing

Hi there.
I have a peculiar problem with my IPhone 3g 16G White, legally unlocked.
I don't know why this happens in the first place but here is the simptoms.
You try to open any app you have bought in app store and almost everyone will crash to the main screen again. If you try any of the original apps such as weather or stock they work fine. But if you try any other app it will crash again to the main screen. I tried reseting the IPhone, sync, ever restore, nothing worked
Until I found a workaround, if you delete an app, go to the app store and install it again, everything starts to work fine. I already sent an email to apple explaining the problem, they told me to go to a apple store and mark an appointment with a genius, I am going there next week. Lets see if he knows what's this.

Did anyone had the same problem?

this new phone is a reman but suposedly should be like new. well it works fine but in the SMS app the letter "E" "S" and "Z" and no matter how much i drag my finger it wont work. could this be a bug or jsut a bad :apple: ? i updated to 2.2.1 as well so im not sure if thats waht is causing it. it really pisses me off that a phone this expensive is having so many problems. thanks for any help. im going to give apple in victoria gardens another ring to see waht they can do.

New iPhone 3G goes black, crashes; requires reset

One week old iPhone 3G, set to factory defaults, for no reason while using (had iTunes running and was about to make a call) pressed the Home key, heard short, soft static in headphones, screen went black. Could not turn on again. Had to do hard reset. After reset, rang Apple. They suggested doing a Restore. After running Restore, the phone rang, pressed screen to answer phone and crashed again. Had to reset to get it back again. Ran Restore third time, then half hour later swiped to activate phone then on top half of screen could see iTunes playing with no music, and on bottom half was the wallpaper. After 15 sec, iTunes graphics disappears and phone worked again but screen would go black for a half second then return. DId this a couple of times. Went through Restore again and reset everything to factory defaults. Now has been working normally for couple of hours. Phone is from Virgin Mobile, no added application, no hacks. Battery is fully charged. Geez...

my iphone is fully charged, i turn it off, turn it back on after school, and battery level is 50% :(

In the tips & tricks section, there's all kinds of advice about how to extend battery life.

So here's my problem: I've done a lot of those tricks and it really has extended my battery life. Usually the battery didn't get low till around midnight (and sometimes even then it was still more than 50%)

Last night I noticed my phone was warm to the touch, right where the battery is. It made me think one of the apps was running in the background, but I checked and everything seemed fine. Today I took my fully charged phone to work, and before noon it's already below 50%. WTF!?

i find this happens to me too...

I got a "No Service" indicator in place of the signal strength bars the last time I put the iPhone in the cradle and a sync began. Powering off completely (not just putting to sleep) brought the network back to life.

ATT rep had no idea why this happened.

this happens to me alot... to save me from having to turn of my phone constantly.... go into settings and select airplane mode, flick it to on, leave it for a few seconds, then flick it back to of... it should search for service and then you should be right.. i have to do this so many times due the fact i have really weak signal in my house... : (

i have found my battery gets really hot as well, i think if you turn fetch of on your phone and push then it will extend battery life...along with dimming the light, but i mean im on instant messanger constantly and i find by lunch time my battery is going flat, i dont want to turn push of or turn of the app... so i guess i have to deal with it... also could it be that you didnt fully charge the phone when you first got it... i made that mistake with an ipod and well the battery life sucked on that... now i always fully charge my phones ipods etc.

I had a similar problem, and a friend suggested uninstalling an application and re-installing it. (Any app.) While that worked, it was awkward. Then I got the Free Memory app (v 1.4) that let you free up memory for applications.
I've had no problems since then. You might give that a try.

I had a few apps not working even when I tried to install and reinstall. Am not sure what to do. Best part, these apps were downloaded via Wifi and somehow does not have a trace on my itunes.

Could you be in a dead zone when it goes right to voice mail?
Maybe where you are at the time you have zero bars.

Hey guys, hope I'm in the right place here. Apologies if not.

I've had a couple of problems with my app, well not myself, but on a friends iphone. This is quite a new problem so it could be the upgrade :s

He says that it closes down after about a minute. Would it be cool for one or two of you to download my app with some free promotional codes and give it a try for a couple of minutes to see if it does the same on yours.

Please message me on here and I'll pm the promo code to you.

thanks very much in advance : )

Earphone jack

When I pull out my earphones the ipod on my iPhone starts to play automaticly. I hardly ever use the iPod , so I know that track was not left on. Also when I plug the headsphones in the iPod starts automaticaly. This happenens frequently. DadaiPhone

network issue(sort of)

I have an iPhone 3G and like most who owns one, the 3G is what makes it kind of good right? Faster speed, connection, downloads, etc. Well my issue isn't with the 3G. I have pretty good 3G connection in my area. My issue is actually when I disable 3G and try to connect to EDGE. I know that its a slower network and all, but my iPhone can't seem to connect to it. Ok....you know how if you go into settings>general>network and disable 3G, it would switch to EDGE or GPRS right? well, mines don't do that. The signal bars, AT&T sign, and 3G goes away and it just says "searching". But most of the time it just says "no service". Even after letting the phone sit for mins, even hours, it is still searching for a signal. I would need to enable 3G in order to get service again. I've tested this method on about 5 other iPhone 3G's and all would switch to EDGE when 3G is disabled. Except mines. I tried every tips/tricks, troubleshooting(restarting iPhone, reseating SIM card, restoring iPhone, toggling airplane mode, etc.) and nothing seems to work. It's really not a big issue with me cause as long as the 3G still works, I'll be fine, but I just want to know what could be the source of this problem. Is it the network or is it my iPhone?

1. You don't see the change in ringer volume. If you switch the silent switch on or off, it will stay stuck.
2. You try getting in with your passcode. The passcode doesn't appear in the boxes and you can't get into your phone.
3. Do a hard reset.

no sound from fairplay version 2 songs.

Here is a strange bug I have, Apple still has not worked it out,

When I play songs on my iPhone 3G, some songs play with sound and some song play with not sound, yes they play, with not sound.

After lots of hours on the phone with apple, an exchange for a new iPhone, I still have the same problem, Fairplay version 2 files purchased from iTunes does not play on my iPhone, Currently Apple has escalated the bug up line to some Engineering department.

Thing have tried to resolve issue.

1 restore phone
2 rebuild itunes library
3 redownload files form itunes under a different user
4 load sound files from other computers on a clean restored phone

now fairplay version 1 play fine.
