E-mail checking time

If you look back on the video you can clearly see there is a "manual" option above the 15 min, 30 min and hour options. I think your problem is solved.

Generally I agree (especially from a marketing point of view), but be careful of the megapixel myth. The lens is generally a more important feature than the number of pixels, and unless Apple wants to put a large lens on the iPhone (which I don't think they will do), I suspect anymore than 2 Megapixels would be a waste.

I was also thinking that it would be great to apply a Core Image normalization filter right in the phone. My current phone takes crappy pics, but if I load them into GIMP and do an auto-normalize they look a lot better. If my phone did that for me, that would rock.

No calculator... makes this phone useless. Gosh, the audacity of apple... who the hell do they think they are by not including a calculator? Do they assume that people can magically crank numbers out in their head? OMG, I think I'm forced to wait for Version Z; by then, Apple will figure out how to include an automatic toilet paper dispenser, as I absolutely need this critical and essential feature...

:D :rolleyes::rolleyes: :rolleyes: :D

But there is a calculator???

As far as toilet paper... I'd keep the $600 phone away from the toilet. :p

So did anyone catch that in the mail settings there was a button for "add account"? was this known already? i had been wondering for a while if we were going to be able to have multiple email accounts on the phone.

and did anyone else notice that the resturant owner guy was right about the settings? haha maybe i was wrong about him being crazy.:D

email - 15m 30m 1hr - no 5 minutes!
I have my Treo and mail.app set to check email every five minutes. I do hope they add a 5-minute option. Yes it eats the battery faster, but I need info faster. This one really bothers me.

Do your email servers support IMAP w/ IDLE? Exchange and most IMAP capable mail servers do. Then you might be able to have push email- all evidence points to the mail client & Yahoo's IMAP being the industry standard variety w/ IDLE support.

Wow. I was planning on holding out awhile, but now I may have to get one that weekend.

I suspect the "manual" option is to disable automatic checking completely, not to manually set a specific interval. That's the way it works in mail.app.

Now that I've seen the video, I'm wondering. . .

What about software updates for the Widgets and other features? Will there be an auto-install feature, or will they notify the user by e-mail to download it manually?

Will the e-mail program ("Mail 2" or whatever it's called) handle multiple mail addresses with your ISP? I've a primary mailbox, plus additional aliases; will the program import mail to all of them, intelligently separating them into their individual mailboxes (me1@blahblah.com, me2@blahblah.com, me3@blahblah.com, etc)?

(The last question assumes that the iPhone will use your current e-mail address and not a new one such as "joeblow@att.net.")

Is there a SPAM blocker, or will it rely solely on the SPAM-blocking software used by the ISP?

Will the iPhone handle text messaging? (It wasn't mentioned.)

:)

yes it's been known for ever that you could add multiple accounts.

Imap-idle

I'd be thrilled if the iPhone supported IMAP-IDLE. I am curious how they're implementing push email with yahoo and if that can be extended to standard IMAP providers.

(update) I did some digging. Looks like Yahoo's "push email" is a bit lame. It sends an SMS message to your phone, telling it to check for email. If true here, you'll need unlimited SMS receiving. And to make this work with standard IMAP, the server would have to do this (or a client running on an active desktop), PLUS the iPhone would need to know what to do after the SMS message was received...

Two Mics?

Am I right in thinking the iPhone has two microphones, one on the top and one on the bottom?

The one on the bottom is to the left of the iPod slot, and it looks like the speaker to the right of the iPod slot.

The one on the top is a small hole, and it looks like the built-in microphone on my PowerBook.

If I'm right, then the obvious question has to be: Why?

Or if I'm mistaken, then my apologies for wasting your time.

MAc OS X

Great news about being able to view Word docs but does anyone know if it's possible to save them somewhere and access them through the Notes app, maybe?

Since this is a Mac OS X device and under the "regular" Mac OS X, you can open a Word Document with the Text Edit App ... I assume you will be able to edit the doc and copy and paste stuff.

I see it, too. lol

Even with this LONG video tour, there's still things we havn't seen: Calander, Notes, the rest of settings, the clock, the CAMERA. I guess these are basic feature but I wonder how Apple has improved/innovated them?

Here's to the 29th!

A few items in Settings that aren't in the tour (they're mentioned on the tech specs page, in the footnotes):

- Call Forwarding
- Ask to Join Networks
- Auto-Brightness

That's the "pop-out" button for the SIM card slot. It works the same way as the one on the bottom of the Apple Remote - you push it with a sharp object, it pops out the tray.

It's only OS X, not Mac OS X. So it's not going to have everything on it. No one knows if you'll be able to edit word docs and stuff, but you'll most likely be able to copy them into an email or notes.

One Tap, Two Step ;o)

Watch again. It's confusing because he says it's easy to speed dial with one tap. Then he proceeds to demonstrate not FAVORITES but calling from the address book. When he moves to favorites, it's one tap.

And obviously the tap where you choose favorites doesn't count!

Hello? Johnny Appleseed was NOT in Favorites.
So he demonstrated how to add him to Favorites.
Once he is in the list, It's One Tap."

I think we need to check the drinking water in parts of the country (there may be some sort of an inhibitor in it).

I think this whole "ONe Tap" thingy ... refers to the "regular" process of non "multi-touch" phones ;o)

You might want to scale down your expectations regarding OS X on iPhone (Incidentally, Apple have never said that it runs "Mac" OS X, just "OS X".) There is no TextEdit on iPhone. In fact, there is no clipboard (in Safari, anyway).

anyone else notice that the fish wallpaper wasn't listed when he went into settings... i liked that background.
This makes me want one even more.... way to go apple marketing ;)

even if it isn't included with the iphone, the fish wallpaper is included with every new mac.

Sorry, I missed it, he says it in the introduction to the e-mail section, and I was listening to the demo.

Still - you could have been a little more friendly in your reply, appleintelrock. ISMPlus was at least humorous :)

LOL. When I read that you doubled checked and didn't hear the second time I thought to myself "oh man, maybe I'm a little too excited and made that up! Yikes! Gotta go check! " Glad you found it in there!:D

Awesome! I really wish they would stop putting this stuff out because it's only going to make the lines longer and longer ;)

That is a very, very impressive demo. Yes, the lines will now be even longer. I don't need mine that day so I'm ordering online to avoid the line. :)
