It has been know a while that Balda, a German Co. , is the supplier for the iphone's touch screen but the LCD is being supplied by many companies including Epson, Toshiba and Sharp (probably even more). The two known model numbers of iPhone screens may not actually be different manufacturers, they could be as simple as version numbers for all we know.

Here is a component breakdown to look at:

Component Breakdown

The rumor from the Apple Store manager is almost useless. Apple doesn't let their store managers know much about anything like this.

good find.

so there might be a chance that screen models are simply "rotating", depending on the manufacturer's stock.

here is the picture from the previous post:

I just wanted to chime in -- I have a 5-series screen, but my girlfriend just got a new iPhone -- sure enough it has the 7-series screen, but _no_ dots.

I spent about half an hour last night going through the two phones side by side. There is a slight variance in contrast -- the 7 series actually seemed to be a little more constrasty -- between the two, but other than that they were identical -- there were no dots on her 7-series screen, even at maximum brightness.

Has anybody checked what regions of the country the dotted phones are coming from? I'm wondering if it is a problem with a specific batch of the 7-Series screens versus all of them, and if so, if they're geographically centered in one area.

i think they are more or less all over the country. they are everywhere in Los Angeles.

Stupid? I think not, if one broke the screen and did not wish to pay Apple to do it. Besides, taking the iPhone apart is childs play compared to some of the stuff I do. Hoever, not everyone, like you, would be up to doing so! Some people get so scared doing the simplist things if they dont understand it. Its nice to know there are replacements out there!

It's not about being afraid to do simple stuff, it's about not wanting to void the warranty on my $600 purchase. Glad to see you're willing to do that.

Hey, I've got a 5* lcd and I can see a faint grid of dots if I turn my brightness up to max and look at the screen from a tilt. Just to echo another person's observation that his/her 5* lcd had the same artifacts.

Regards,
Dave

you might be able to see them, which seems unlikely, but they are definitely not as evident as they are on a 7*** screen.

the pictures at the top of the post that i have taken (the battery screen one) shows you the phone at half brightness, on a 7*** screen.

Last I checked, the warrenty only covers defects in manufacturing/workmanship. I did not know it covers damaged inflicted by the user. Thanks for pointing out that it does!!!!

Just to chime in:

i have a 7 series screen, purchased on the 29th in new jersey, and i can barely see the dots if the brightness is all the way up and the screen in about an inch from my face. if the phone is at normal viewing distance, like when you look to see who is calling, there is no way they could be seen.

I'm named Dave, too. Perhaps it's only on 5*'s that are purchased by people with our name.

I do have to admit, I have to *try* and find it, and I can't see it at half brightness. When I turn it to full, I can surely see it. I will try to photograph it tonight, and put up some pics, some with heightened contrast to amplify the effect.

hi jersey,

the problem is more evident in some phones. If you take a look at the pictures on the 1st post you'll see what i am talking about.

Also, keep in mind that if you can't see them, it doesn't mean they don't have an impact on the screen.

in fact, they tend to change the way that black/dark colors are portrayed on the screen.
The 7*** screens tend to be less defined/sharp than the 5*** screens, if you happen to compare the two.

this is again more obvious if you , like most of us, have owned a 5*** screen before and got a 7*** in exchange.

hope this helps.

This is still my first phone, and compared to the pics already posted, no way do i want to exchange it for a new one, as those look to be 10x worse than what I have. Of course, that could also be some exaggeration due to the camera zoom / macro/ etc.

I guess I never noticed it as I use the phone on 1/2 brightness all the time.

Maybe I'll go compare the screens at the NYC stores later this week to my phone.

This issue certainly doesnt render the phone unusable for me by any stretch, and honestly, I'll probably forget about it in the next week.

Why 7* screens may be better than 5* screens...

Think of the logic:

It is clear that the white dot patterns are software generated as they resize based on the application/screen interface and touchable areas displayed.

The 7* screens that display a faint trace on medium brightness are actually better than the 5* screens since they have a superior color depth.

I am almost positive that the engineers overlooked the color mapping of the selection grids (white dot pattern) when they were calibrating the phone as they are extremely difficult to see - except on screens that have extremely good color depth and contrast.

All it would take would be to recalibrate the selection grids with a darker color or to switch them off on the upcoming firmware update. So why not keep the 7* screen with better color depth?

i see your point and share the same hopes, but for now, the fact that it is a software issue "only" is a speculation...

i agree that since they tend to change depending on the function of the screen they must be software related but it could be that the LCD in consideration is designed to react to the software that way, as opposed to another manufacturer's which won't show the touch software working as blatantly as this one.

i hope we'll find out soon!

Here we go... a cropped macro of my iPhone's 5* LCD complete with checkerboard.

NO alterations (other than the text) either.

I am thinking though... what if this is just a very slightly grayed background? Look at the bottom of the Clock icon... it appears to be "blacker" than the rest...

Anyway... have a look.

I see what you're looking at, but I believe this is the individual pixels and not the same issue that others have posted where it's like every 5th pixel is white in a grid. Look at some of the pics from earlier and you'll see what I mean.

I think it looks exactly like the photo at the bottom of the first page.

Although that does seem pretty interesting it appears much different then the issue being discussed in this thread. Much different then the issue my 7 series screen is having compared to my 5 series screen.

I see the white dots (checkered pattern) on that pic of the 5* with almost the exact same intensity as my 7*. And I got mine opening day (#13 in line). For me, this pretty much dismisses the idea that 5*'s don't have the white dots.

If anything this looks to be a software issue. People seem to be indicating that both 7 and 5 series screen have the issue but it is more easily apparent on the 7. The 7 series seems to have better contrast which would make the dots more noticeable at max brightness as the 5 series will likely be more washed out making the white dots harder to see. Honestly if I had some dead pixels I would be worried more about those than this. If it is software there is always the possibility it could be resolved in a future update, a dead pixel ain't gonna be resurrected even on the Jesus phone ;)

Totally agree - people with phones that can see the dots are actually complaining they got a screen with better color depth and contrast ratio.

Perhaps. But all the white dots on the 7 series screens at a distance make the dark colors look washed out and actually LESS contrasty. My blacks seem blacker and my colors seem more saturated on my 5 series screen.

I have a 7 series as well with the dots, but barely noticeable. I'll wait to see what happens with this as time goes on to see what comes of this. I too seem to have some thought this is a contrast difference issue between the two screens.

I just returned my 7# model phone because it had a few problems. The new phone they gave me is a 5# model, but it also has the dots. Can't see them as much, but they're there. I also noticed this phone has around 5-6 dead pixels.

Finally a conclusion! I agree Jerry. I just went to the apple store today and saw all the display models (about 10 of them) and I can see the white dot grid on ALL of them. I turned up the brightness on all of them. Some of the iPhones you can see the dots more than others. But it is on ALL of them. My friend has a 5, you can barely see it on his at max brightness, but it IS there. The 7 does have better colors and better contrast. The 5 is sharper and the black looks nice. So for people that have OCD, stop returning your iphones because of the dots-- they are on ALL iPhones. This is not a LCD issue anymore. NOW GO ENJOY YOUR IPHONE!!!! Jesus

...until the 6 series screen comes out with perfect black levels, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 0 stuck/dead pixels.

Then everyone can complain and return their phones.:apple:
