agreed, but why is everyone else saying that the 7-series has more colors and contrast???

Not sure.... like I said when I compared mine to a 7 series, it was clear that the one I have, a 5 series, had better blacks and contrast with more vibrant colors. The 7 series at any brightness look washed out and grey in color.

On another note...... Do those with the patter also have light leakage?

If some of you recall, Apple "announced" the iPhone was going to come with optical grade glass instead of plastic. Some said they changed them at some point post-production, others more logically pointed out that more than likely they were produced this way from day one and Apple simply made the announcement to drown scratch concerns.

What *IF* they were indeed produced with the plastic screens like the demo/prototypes? At lest initially. But scratch concerns from the media pushed Apple to make a switch to glass - something that maybe was going to come with a later model.

If so, some phones would have to have been handled and screens swapped. The workmanship maybe was not up to par and the result was light leakage and maybe a film layer in the LCD sandwich and captive layer left out?

Total hunch, but it may explain the irregularities between them. With todays production methods, I find it odd to have so many variations....

So, I just got my phone from AppleCare. On their site, they list "Product Replaced". It appears as though the phone they sent me is a new one. And guess what??? It is a 5*** screen!!!!!! I was very worried I was going to get another 7** screen, but Apple sent me a 5*. I can very clearly see it has better color and contrast versus my old one. The loaner phone had a 5* screen as well, and the comparison between my old one and the loaner was obvious.

So, here is how I got my problem fixed. I called apple, setup a mail order repair, stated my problem was white dots, and they sent me a 5* iPhone. I hope the rest of you have the same luck.

Did you have to send your old phone back before you got your new one? Where did you get the "loaner" from?

AppleCare sent me a loaner phone, I sent my old one in, they sent me a new one, I have to send the loaner back.

they charge you $29 for a loaner phone.. I'm on the phone with them now and in the process

I'm sending mine in to Apple care. I didn't ask for the loaner because it costs $29 so I'll be iPhoneless for about a week.

LOL! i went thru the process with apple support :)

now i just wait...... i guess this will save me the time and effort to trek myself down to the applestores again,
i just kept stating the fact that i have checkered white dots everywhere on my blacks, its annoying, and makes my black look gray, and its just horrible!
i just kept stating how much it looks gray and stuff and white dots everywhere, and it seems like the support guy understood what the problem was, set me up for the process......

now i hope, this one will......be .......the.....one.....with.....no......white dots....
i even opted for the loaner phone and lets see how that one is

i dont care about all this talk about constrast between the two models and what not, when your black is black with no white dots, it makes everything look much nicer, and more vivid.

did u pay $29 for the loaner?

yes i did, i was on the fence but i thought i should need a phone for a week, since i dont have a spare one for this sim

of course, if i really wanted too, i could have found a friend with a spare phone, but decided to play around with the loaner for that time

The turn around time is only like 3 business days. Day 1, they send you a loaner (if you got one, if not, I guess you get an empty box). If you mail it via fedex before the cut-off time, they'll get it the next day. They repair/replace, and then the following day you should get the new/repaired one.

I did NOT pay for the loaner phone. They said it would be $29, and I told them (very nicely) that I did not feel paying for a loaner was fair. If they were going to push the issue, I would have just driven to the Apple store and done the exchange. However, they were very nice and said they'd waive the loaner fee. I probably should check my credit card though! :)

I never knew how big the difference between the two screens is until I saw this pic

anybody tried replacement at a local Apple Store through genius bar? My phone is more than two weeks old (7 LCD) and wondering if it's even worth a try...

I really want to replace my 7 LCD through AppleCare, since they turned me away at the store. I have a few questions:

1) For those who posted that they called AppleCare and are planning to send theirs in: Did they respond well to the idea that you want to exchange your phone solely on the grounds of the white checkered dots? Did you need to reference the LCD serial number?

2) I am currently teaching at a college campus away from home; I want to resolve this ASAP, but I'm not even sure how mail works here. Plus, if I finish and leave before it's resolved for some reason that will only put more wrinkles in things. Do you think that it'd be viable to wait about a week and a half and then call AppleCare?

Thanks,
-i

Well, I called Apple and they are replacing it.

The lady I talked to waived the $29 fee for the loaner. :)

That's the sweet General charm I guess. ;)

I have tried this on the brightness issue between the 7 and 5 series LCD, and I was turned away because when compared to floor models the difference was "noticeable, but within specifications" at one store, and "look, it's exactly the same" at another. Maybe you will have better luck if you point out the white checkered dots, but I have a feeling it will result in a floor comparison, which will "prove" you wrong at the Bar.

Plus, if you aren't explicit about the 7 vs. 5 series LCD problem, you are probably going to wind up with another 7, since that is what the stores are currently stocked with. That's why I'm going to do what everyone else did and call AppleCare directly to describe the problem.

@The General:

Did you reference the LCD serial number and/or was your AppleCare representative aware of the white dot / brightness problem already?

Thanks,
-i

So has it been established that this is something that cannot be resolved with a potential firmware update? It is a physical issue with the components?

I have an appointment to go into an Apple store today, I'll see what they say. Does anyone know if Apple exchanges them in store even if you bought it at the AT&T store? My AT&T store has been sold out since launch day and the people are totally unhelpful.

i feel like calling back in and getting my 29$ loaner phone fee waived....since everyone else is...

Whell I just got off the phone with AppleCare. The guy said he has had numerous calls about the white dots / checker pattern and the darkness issue. He asked for my LCD ID which I gave him... hopefully they put the 5* in my phone instead!

I just talked with AppleCare over the phone.

The guy (he was friendly and nice) didn't know about this issue. I told him about the LCD ID, showed him the comparison photos on this forum. He talked to his supervisor, and they agreed to send me a replacement.

He told me he specified to send me an unit with LCD ID 5**.

He also said that 29.99 fee will be refunded after I return the loaner phone.

I'm hoping to death it's going to work out...
