Ok, I no longer think this has anything to do with the touch layer.

What i did

1) made an all black img and put in on my iPhone
2) looked at the image in Photos app.
3) tapped to turn on the photo controls
4) tapped to turn off photo controls
5) dragged slowly in from the right
6) dragged slowly in from the left
7) switched back to home screen

What i Observed

When i looked at the dots on a all black screen the dots where spaced out and checkered.
When the photo controls where on the dots where tighter together and in line.
When i drag a photo in from the right (the next photo in the album, so i pull my finger left) the dots remain checkered.
Now the fun part: When i pull the photo in from the left (prev photo, drag my finger to the right) the dots become tighter in pattern on an angle (about 45 deg) down to the lower right. As i dragged further to the right the dots moved along with the top left corner of the prev image. further filling the screen.
then when i switched back to Home. they fill the screen with the tight pattern except at the top.

My conclusion (this is so much fun, like cem lab back in High School)
The dots appear on the LCD it itself, they appear tighter to the right and descend down from any on screen pixel. this is also why at startup, the tighter dots are only on the lower right of the screen, b/4 of the big apple logo in the middle. also why the tight dots are not at the top of the home screen where there is no text.

I sill don't know what they are, or why. bit the fact that they only show half way through start up and def react to pixels on the screen leeds me to believe this might be fixed with software.

great shots!
it's good to find more info about this.

i think and hope it is a software issue.

hopefully we'll get some shots from a 5*** model soon, in order to make it clear that there is an issue.

Here is my 5XXXX screen that I picked up on Friday night. So some stores still do carry them. No visible dots.

I am beginning to think this may be a software issue as well. I am really starting to regret sending mine in now. I fear I'll end up with something worse!

Were you able to verify that it was a 5* screen at the store? Also, what do you mean by "some stores"--was this a store that probably didn't move that many iPhones and was more likely to have older stock? Thanks!

Nope. I was not able to verify that I was getting a 5XXXX screen until I got home. I just got lucky. I was actually returning my first one for a number of reasons, this checkered dot thing being one of them. They didn't acknowledge it being a problem though. Luckily my other reasons for returning it were enough of a problem. I wasn't implying anything by saying "some stores." Just that people think that all the new ones being shipped out have the 7XXXXX screen and I can at least tell you that the Apple store at the Domain in Austin had some 5XXXX screens on Friday the 13th. I'm guessing that means some other stores do as well.

I see a dead pixel between maps and weather.. nothing is perfect

I noticed that too, but I think it might just be a speck of dust because I can't find that spot on my phone.

But this phone does have other areas where there are dead/stuck pixels. If I do the whole black photo app test, I can count around 10 of them. But they are so small that the old checkered problem was worse. I'm going to just keep my phone -- dead pixels and all. Seems like I'd just be signing myself up for a phone with worse problems at this point. I question whether there is even such a thing as a perfect iPhone.

Re: i think and hope it is a software issue.

phoneorpda,

Thanks for the tests.

In a much earlier post on this thread, someone said that Apple used two different manufacturers for the LCD's, that would dovetail with the issue of earlier screens being pure black and later ones having white dots.

Apple may have held the inferior ones back, but found they had to sell them when they got so many people asking for replacements related to battery issues, dead pixals, etc.

IMO, no manufacturer of a high end product like the iPhone, would send out units with a lower quality screen, unless they had to. If software was the problem, wouldn't it be relatively easy to fix, before shipment?

Also, on a different thread, someone complains of excessive light leakage on certain apps.

I also have the model screen with the issue,

but it is EXTREMELY faint and I really have to look to see them. Also, I got mine on launch night, so I don't think it's tied to apple handing them out because of returns.

I also have a wide line across my screen that is lighter than the rest of the screen, it's very faint as well, but once you notice it it's hard not to see it. Unlike the dots though, I can see it head on especially on white.

Just my input from my experience...

Thanks,
Technocoy

I would definitely not characterize my iPhone as inferior or being low quality just because there's a grid of white dots that are barely visible. The contrast and color on my phone are perfect.

good for you.
then leave the issue to us and don't ask for "evidence".

i don't like spending time posting every moment i have a second.

I took this issue to heart because i know that i am not the only one with this problem.

if you don't agree, there is no reason to fight it.

as i said, you have nothing to reference it to.
We all had a previous 5*** model to begin with, so to our eyes, there is a big discrepancy.

It seems like most people are unhappy

.....

A lot of people feel that, compared to the earlier phones that they bought, they are inferior.

The question is, why did the first shipment of phones, have a crisp, black screen, and the second one didn't? Almost every other poster on this subject seems to be unhappy with the new screen.

dear madame,

i think that having the better screens for release would have been a better move, since that's when you get most publicity.

this is just speculation, i guess.

we'll see if it turns out to be true.

It would be the case if the 7*** screens become the only ones available from now on.

good for you.

EXACTLY, once you held the first 5*** model series and then get a 7*** one, there is a difference in the screen quality in how you notice things. Not to mention, apple should want and wish for a crisp black screen
checkered pattern just doesnt look right

i mean, this thing is for video too right???? i want my videos to be flawless and not covered with white dots

Just got the truth.. the white dot LCD screens, made by a manufacturer in China, offered the lowest bid to Apple during the manufacturing process... thus, the flawless black LCD screen manufacturer was low balled and Apple terminated dealings with them and only 100,000 were produced... the white dot LCD is cheaper, and all the iPhones from now on have this LCD.

and your source is?

so far, all you have been providing is gratuitous counter-posts.

please be more specific if you know something.

if you can't be, don't post.

Makes a lot of sense. Where did you hear/read it?

tamakin,

i wish i had the tools and time to do it.

If these are the screens we are stuck with and there is no way out of it, i might just sell mine and buy a used one that doesn't have the defective screen.

I would like for this issue to be resolved for everybody, but i am by no means capable or in the position of leading a crusade.

What happened to Apple testing and quality control?

It's hard to figure out why Apple released this baby when they did. Did they figure people wouldn't notice or care about all of the problems, from battery, to volume, screen issues, etc. etc?

Wile that may be true. It doesn't make much sense. Since the screen is fine during the 1st part of startup.

Might explain some other issues. Like brightness and blur and vertical lines, but the dots doesn't look like a LCD defect, looks more like a video card/driver issue. As previous analysis describes.

it's a first generation electronic device. nuff said.

you are not making any sense at all.

why don't you post about where you heard about the manufacturer's switch because of money?

we are trying to find a solution to an issue that is real to a lot of people on this board.

stop posting nonsense, please.
