I think the SE has been a much bigger success than iPhone5C was a failure. 5C sold decently well, and covered the segment it needed. I think SE is a bigger segment, simply because it's not under powered. It's just small. Where 5C was small AND under powered.

I'd like to keep the design. Albeit a taller screen in the same form factor wouldn't bother me, but I'd like them to retain the home button. Something tells me they will jettison that pretty quickly.
I've been paying continously for iCloud service.
Still waiting for a more mature Apple Watch.
I found no need for me to buy the Apple TV just for the sake of just mirroring, Apple Music and youtube. The TV apps choice are scarce in my country and the govs blocked Netflix here. Bummer.
Agree. The 5c was indeed just like the 5 which is a generation behind the 5s that launched the same timeline back then, while the SE has the 6s DNA which was currently the latest offering back then.
The SE2 will either has the 8 shape and better specs or the X shape with a tad step back in specs (TFT screen, X faceID and camera tech instead of X2, and aluminum back with "that" lines).

I expect not many people willing (or able) to shell out $1K for a smartphone when less expensive alternatives work just as well for their usage (likely Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc). There's that mental barrier of $1K, too.
True. In my country, the 64GB X costs ~1349US$ thanks for the taxes. I'm holding out the purchase until Apple announce the X2 so the X could depreciate to my tolerable price point.
Which leads me to further believe that Apple will have a spring keynote hopefully before WWDC 2018. Because I don't believe Apple will launch the iPhone SE 2 along side the rumored 6.1 LCD/5.8/6.5 OLED models in September. Or, they could announce the iPhone SE 2 during WWDC, similarly to the iPads being refreshed in June 2017.
I'm sure that's a big part of it, but I absolutely disagree that this model is only popular due to cost.
I'm taking my X back to return to my SE. I offered to give the $$ back to my folks (it was a Xmas gift), but they implored me to do something else with it so I'll just invest it. Steve was right - there's a real ergonomic issue w/ going to the larger phones, esp if you care about one hand use at all. I happen to care alot about it but I don't use my phone as a secondary computer like some might, just for light web use, texting, etc.
I'm holding out hope that Apple eventually comes out w/ an X mini in time... it is rumored that Samsung may have an S9 mini in the works. Otherwise very much looking forward to the SE2.
I don't think Samsung will create another mini ... it's been 2yrs since the last one they created. Right now only Sony and Apple make phones under 5" screens. Should Apple be keen to increase the screen size of the SE yet bring down the bezels then they can achieve 5-5.2" easily in the same volume and size ... rounded edges would also help the illusion but I hope not slippery.
I find that this distinction between usage patterns is generally at the root of the differences in phone preferences.
I love the SE purely on size. Between where I put it in my car, when I use it on top of a treadmill, when it slides into all the pockets on all my clothes so easily (even small ones) and so many dozens of other use cases, it just always fits the bill.
For what I do with my mobile "phone" - The small physical size is the #1 reason I love it.

This doesn't happen to me with my SE and I love that...
It's particularly relevant in warmer weather situations where I might have shorts or just less clothing on in general. It's always a cinch to find a spot for my SE.

There's a touch of physical size increase I could handle if I had to, but if they go too far towards the current 4.7" size, it's a non-starter, no question.
Although the new hotness is great and all, I'd prefer they just spec bump the existing case design.
It think it's the most timeless and gorgeous design they've made.
(I am counting iP4/5/5s/SE all as one design for our purposes here)
The funny thing is I don't even care about the size of it much. I'd prefer it be a bit smaller and lighter, but my bigger issue is the user experience is poor. The fact that Reachability even exists is concerning. The fact that using Reachability *still* puts it outside the domain of comfortable one-hand use (unless you're a guy with above average hands) makes it worse. The new gestures on the X in conjunction with the taller screen, forcing one to span the entire top to bottom to do common activities, puts that much more strain on the experience.
I understand the point of the plus models is to bridge between a tablet and a phone, the consequence of this fusion is accepting you have a device which requires two hands for most use cases. But for their mainline device... it just feels half-baked.
I want the iPhone X to be in iPhone SE size. That photo with Tim's iPhone 7 Plus hanging out is exactly why I hate the larger phone sizes.

If they made a 3.5" generation physical size version of the SE I'd likely buy that instead as well!
Sorry, I meant vs. X. The X fits fine in the rear pocket of my jeans and just holding it in my hands is comfortable enough - it's the using it that sucks for me, readjusting my grip, sliding it up and down in my hand, etc.
Though I do recall some were complaining about the move from 3.5 -> 4... with a normal grip, I don't quite reach the entire screen of the SE with my thumb, there are times I do have to shuffle a bit. To that end it makes sense that an ideal full-screen SE would benefit by a reduction in form-factor.
Oh, I agree. My mom doesn't want anything bigger than the 5s. I was really glad when Apple released the SE and got her one as soon as they were available. Her 5s had mechanical and battery issues already and I really didn't want to spend $$ on an OOW replacement when the A7 is already showing its age.
My post was specifically in reference to lower than forecasted iPhone X demand. $1K entry level pricing in the US (higher in other countries) is a definite barrier to entry.
I'm in the same boat, I want an upgraded SE phone, I hate the BIG phones.
Trouble is, my current SE has a screen separating..... so my options:
1) replace screen in hopes that the frame isn't bent
2) buy a NEW SE phone for $450 (which is already obsolete, and why pay full price for 2 year old tech)
3) protest and go back to a non-smart phone, and just live with texting etc with my iPad and computer
4) adopt the BIG azz new phones, and get an iPhone 8 for $200 more than the obsolete SE
5) Go with a BIG azz droid phone
I hate all the options and about to just throw in the towel and cut my wireless cord (and go phone less, back to the good ole college days).

iPhone SE out of warranty replacement cost: $269.
If on AT&T and can live on 32GB, you can also check if Best Buy in your area still has the $150 promo for 32GB SE Prepaid Kit. At that price, I bought one as backup just in case.
What if Apple made the three rumoured bigger sizes of iPhone, and then made a new SE with the 4.7” screen size, would that be too big?
It probably will be for some. The reason my mom likes the SE is because it fits in her pants pockets. She can't do that with the iPhone 6/6s/7/8.
If Apple keep the chassis the same and just upgrades the components, it will not cost much for Apple to do that since most of the new SE components are already two years old. A12 will be in September! It a budget iPhone plain and simple. For folks that cannot afford a regular iPhone. You will not find any kids carrying this SE. They want the status of other iPhones!
We will have to see what happens then, I would say they could always make a bezelles design one, but I can’t see the SE getting Face ID??
