hey shout out to MR admins for having the balls to keep comments open on this one.

no ethical consumption under capitalism and all that, but choosing not to support an elon company makes me feel good and with the constant flow of negativity in the news these days, I'll take what I can get

Free but nowhere near as good or capable. You only get emergency service through Apple.
Apple's one does let you use for non-emergency.

Thanks, no thanks to Nazis.

Anyhoo, this technology is seriously impressive.

To think that the only option even five years ago was a clunky satellite brick of a phone (like my iridium) that hadn’t seen a redesign in two decades, to just using your standard phone. Once it extends to voice it will be an even more massive enhancement to remote area work. Anywhere in the world.

When did this happen? Originally texting wasn’t available. It should be noted, it’s only provided free of charge for the first 2 years.

Yes but globalstar is quite inferior to starlink.

Oh for crying out loud. I don’t plan on getting this service and don’t have a Tesla. But calling people Nazis does a severe disservice to people who actually suffered, were terrorized, and mercilessly executed by the actual Nazis.
The Nazi Party and its beliefs existed for years before they gained enough power to wreak the kind of destruction and death that they eventually did. During that lead-up, calling them Nazis was accurate, even though they weren't yet doing the worst of the things that you describe. The Nazi Party was established in 1920, and they were able to create their first concentration camps in 1933 due to Hitler's election, which at first were forced labor camps rather than extermination centers, but nevertheless thousands of people died in them from mistreatment, overwork, disease, etc. The Nazis didn't get around to using the camps as extermination centers until several years later, starting around 1939, and ramping up in 1941.

Again, there were full-fledged fascist Nazis before they began mass exterminations, so mass exterminations isn't a prerequisite for being a Nazi. So calling people who have openly said that they admire fascism of the type that existed in Nazi Germany prior to the Party's most egregious crimes, is accurate.

Claiming musk is a Nazi is actually pretty insulting to those that fought actual, for real Nazis 80 years ago.
Enough!

If anything Musk is a John Galt.
Starting a world war isn't necessary in order to be accurately labeled as a Nazi.

If Musk was a John Galt, he'd hide in a gulch inventing things on his own dime, which would make their way to the outside world, instead of flaunting himself endlessly in public as some kind of savior, openly rummaging around in everyone's business in Washington, getting billions in government contracts while simultaneously cutting off funding for science, health, education, etc., stealing people's personal data, and siccing his minions on people he doesn't like. All of that is pretty much the anti-Galt.

Elon buys Twitter to influence the election.

Elon wants Teslas to be self-driving without steering wheels to influence where and how people travel.

Elon uses Starlink so he can make sure people get his Nazi propaganda quickly without interruption.

The Duck believes Elon the Nazi should buy TikTok.

What’s next, Elon the Nazi will construct prisons in South America so he and The Duck can ship prisoners out of the the US?

Anyone that actually helped clean out those camps would have some strong words to say to someone labeling another a Nazi so casually and for something so insignificant.
I know this because my grandfather was one of those soldiers, and this very thing was a MASSIVE pet peeve of his.
And by “strong words,” I mean something I can’t describe in this forum without getting at least a warning, so in perpetuity and in his memory may I suggest not labeling something as evil until you’ve actually been surrounded by the sight and smell of true evil, not just a complete stranger you have an ideological difference with.
Homeboy did a literal Nazi salute on stage to a cheering crowd - TWICE. Does it not count unless he's wearing a period-accurate SS uniform or something?

What's the point in paying for satellite connectivity for just messaging, if Apple provides it for free on their iPhones? I don't get what they are trying to do with it.

Apple's version (using Globalstar satellites) is finicky. You need a clear view of the sky and keep your phone pointed at the satellite in order to send/receive texts. T-Mobile's version (using Starlink satellites) will work while your phone is in your pocket, bag, vehicle, etc. T-Mobile will also be expanding the service to support data and voice via satellite.

Never! Not ever.
Care to explain why ?
Whatever your politics... vote with your dollar.
I’m astonished by many comments here. Politics ? We are supposed to talk about TECHNOLOGY here !!! People speaking about Nazism (without knowing what is means, since Musk not being German hardly could be a Nazist, if this was still a thing), instead of the discussion about the service.

Trying to stay on topic, I’m curios about Starlink : is it working fine ? How it is comparable to a traditional “landline”/cellular ?
