The title of this thread does say flaking, because that's what's happening in the particular subject/article I'm posting about. You keep jumping around trying to argue with people when you have nothing to argue about. The finish in those pictures has flaked off in chunks. Period. Whatever the root cause is not something I claim to know, because there is no evidence for why it did that. It could be from abuse, or demo wear and tear, etc. But with the phone only being on the market for barely two weeks, if it's a demo unit and looks like that, all things being equal, that's terrible.

Flaking would imply it’s coming off in flakes. These look like intentional scratches in some of the photos.

That passes for journalism these days? I'd say its worth reading the linked-to article just to see how bad it is, but its really not worth your time.

If this happens to your phone and you've literally done nothing to cause it, take it to Apple. I know that won't get you any attention on the interweb, but chances are it will get you a replacement phone.

There is no way this happened under normal use. I use a case and I take mine out from time to time, no problems at all. Unless you are physically trying to do this, I don't see it happening.

I buy and use Apple stuff, and have become increasingly critical of their products under Tim Cook as the price of these products has gone up substantially (15" MacBook Pros, new iPhone X).

This is an Internet forum where people can post praise or criticism of Apple. Period. So get over it and get your mind around it.

It's also interesting to see other threads with people saying how easily the iPhone X scratches.

Wait, how can a phone that is not in your possession be "clearly not" having one kind of damage, but "intentionally" having another?

Answer: It can't, because you can't know empirically without having the phone in your hand, and maybe not even if you do.

Is it possibly a result of abuse? Absolutely.

Is it possibly "flaking" as a result of handling by hundreds of people as a demo? Absolutely.

Is it possibly "flaking" because of a bad batch of plating? Absolutely.

Is it possible you would make a bad lawyer and an even worse judge? Absolutely.

I guess time will tell with more data and information whether this is a real problem or not, but this person's Space Grey iPhone X's surface is terribly flaked. If it's true, and if the surface is easily flaked, it reminds me of the early Titanium PowerBooks that flaked bad.

I can tell you this. After spending so much money on this phone, people will not be happy if this becomes widespread.

This article is utter BS. Anyone can go to any Apple Store and see it yourself that even after 2 weeks of constant abuse all the SG X's still look impeccable! On the contrary, the silver models do show some minor scratches. Nothing too dramatic though.
It's obvious that the article is a blatant click bait and the phone has been deliberately abused.
