iOS 12 definitely messed up something with blurring. I took two screenshots of a weather widget: one against a purple and second against an orange background. The sun on a purple background is fullly visible, while the one against an orange background is barely noticable.

Yeah that is not good! When you lose total visibility of certain things depending upon the wallpaper you have a serious problem. Waiting for a response from Apple on this. They may actually do nothing at all.

I just updated to iOS to 12 on my iPhone 8.

When the phone restarted, I could immediately detect that something was seriously wrong with the display. It currently has a very washed out look - as if there is too much brightness, less contrast and was making it more strenuous to read text.

Apparently the same issue as reported here.

What makes me stumped is the fact that there are all those raving reviews and praises for iOS 12, and all the reviewers on youtube giving it their thumbs up, without no one bringing up this display color/brightness/contrast change? Have they simply not seen it? .. or is it possible that this only affects some unfortunate users? Geez.

About to pick up my XS tomorrow, but this has really been depressing the mood. "Is it also going to look hazy?"

Well, all those reviews again, in the tone of "The iPhone XS display is the most amazing thing since sliced bread!" of course give hope, but I fear I could end up wholly disappointed watching a foggy screen, and questioning my sanity, since there hasn't even been a beep about this in the mainstream.

I sent a bug report about this to Apple, the only thing I could do currently. Restarting the device naturally did nothing to the problem.

I had the hope they did that to boost xs sales. But after getting my xs today, its just a dumb decision from apple.

Received my Xs and its the same. :/

According to Natya, it looks like XS still suffers from the color issue :(

I've noticed this problem on my X almost immediately after updating to iOS 12. I can confirm that the color returns to normal only in apps. The general home screen looks washed out for lack of a better word. Colors appear "dull" especially red. It almost has an orange hue to it.

Hope this is addressed in iOS 12.1 update...

Oh yes. I noticed this (I can admit) with the Tinder app icon. On iOS 11 it was bright red - quite striking on the screen in a nice way. Now on iOS 12, it looks like it has gone through an aggressive washing machine treatment; I would also describe it as a dull red with an orange tint.

Le sigh.

Are there 2 issues here which we need to seperate? Wallpaper / home screen vs system wide color changes. Thing is some report color changes in app while some say it only impacts home screen?

And the issue of the text color on the widgets screen was added into this thread also.

I also noticed the white in the background is much more brighter on apps an safari when browsing, I made a report about this issuse to Apple an sent a link to this page, something wrong with the colours I just compare with another 8 plus running 11.4.1

It's both.

The Lock screen is the primary culprit, instead of looking at a gorgeous HDR photo of my family on a brilliant sunny day each time I unlock my iPhone X I get a muddy, blurry, dirty, yellowed version with hard to read greyish, not white, text.

And just today I was in the iMovie app and on one of the options screen the light blue on grey text is completely washed out to the point where I almost couldn't read it. So it's not just lock screens, it's other places in the experience as well. I just want my old OLED crispness and bright whites back.

I am not a complainer, but Apple really needs to do something about this. The 'wow' factor missing from my OLED screen and that's bad enough, but the illegibility is just ridiculous.

I came here to see if I was crazy or not :/ Not.

I do a great deal of photo processing, and it almost looks as if they've assigned the wrong color profile to the screen - blues and greens desaturated (some greens are almost grey now), reds skewing orange, contrast and saturation reduced - it's a mess.

I.e., the Settings app wallpaper preview is not an accurate representation of how the wallpaper will appear.

I have included in parentheses the colour profile of the image in Photos (left) and after uploading with Tapatalk (right).

If you’re viewing with a wide gamut device (iPhone 7 and later?), the difference should be apparent.

Ok, so this is curious. I took screenshot 1 above and set it as the wallpaper. Result:

That’s much more vibrant.

As my brother updated his iPhone X to iOS 12, I was able to directly compare it with my iPhone X iOS 11. First let me start with minor differences. In the settings menu things seemed slightly different. iOS 11 seemed a tiny bit warmer and iOS 12 had a bit higher contrast. Both phones had true tone on and same brightness level. The differences were really minor. No big issues here. Reducing white point could resolve this i think.

The biggest problem i observed was indeed how the walpapers act on both devices. In iOS 11 the wallpapers are shown bright in the preview however after applying them, they are toned a bit down. Made darker. This results in the homescreen app icons that pop out more and are better visible and text is crisp. No eye strain. Also the widgets seem more beautiful because of this.

iOS 12 does not apply this filter to wallpapers, thus bright (white) icons on bright wallpapers makes the homescreen and widgets a pain to look at. The widgets also seem to have brighter backgrounds. Sometimes also the worst text color choice is made on iOS 12.

As mentioned before, live wallpapers do keep the darker filter. And indeed, when setting a live wallpaper in iOS 12, everything looks so much better. Also the new stock wallpaper looks nice in ios12. iOS 11 wallpapers give problems on iOS 12.

After looking at it from this perspective, the problem seems smaller than it is. However, an option to dim the wallpapers would be nice. Apple should also fix the contrast, even if its a minor issue.

Your comment struck a chord with me. I'll bet they're using a common screen profile across all their phones, and the phones with a wider native gamut are showing this issue, while those with a narrower gamut are not affected.

That or they're trying to use different profiles, but not mapping them properly to some phones.

The look on my phone is certainly very reminiscent of incorrectly applying a ProPhoto (or, to a lesser extent, AdobeRGB) profile to a photo taken with sRGB.

Unfortunately, Apple do not give us the opportunity to do profile / color management on our phones :/ so we're pretty much dependent on them to fix it :(

My 7 Plus have same issues after updating the iOS12. Screen is lighter than iOS11. It is terrible..

Just received my iPhone Xs yesterday. Visibility is the same as the 8+. Certain text colors do not work against certain backgrounds and are illegible. Apple has to fix this!

Hello, created account just to post here. I have noticed that something is wrong with my 6s Plus display right after updating to iOS12 so I am happy to find this thread since I was beginning to think I am going blind or something.

On 6s Plus, everything looks whitewashed and text is difficult to read - too much white and the contrast/sharpness is off. Checked all the settings - everything is the same as it was on iOS11. Updated my 2018 iPad on the same day as my iPhone (today), have not noticed any changes in display calibration there.

Turning on Reduce White Point helps a bit, currently at 40%. Colors are still off, but at least my eyes hurt less. I have submitted bug report at https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html, it would be awesome if everyone affected could do the same. Fingers crossed that this gets fixed soon.

The issue I’m having doesn’t have anything to do with the graphics, it’s with the display itself. The colours of everything in the display is less vibrant, less saturated. Everything has a cool tone to it and looks rather lifeless. It actually reminds me of the iPhone 5S display.

When I first tried out the X, it was in Best Buy and I was thoroughly impressed with how good the display looked. When I got mine, it was already updated to iOS 12 (bought it second hand) and I immediately noticed the difference. What makes this even more noticeable is coming from a Galaxy S8, which is noticeably more vibrant.

However, I went to Best Buy today and compared displays since the floor model wasn’t updated yet, and sure enough mine has less vibrant colours.

I’ve tried turning on True Tone but all it does is add a yellow filter, it does nothing to improve the colours. I’ve also tried the various filters, but nothing improves it.

For what I can tell, the displays are no longer calibrated, or Apple intentionally dumbed down the colours.

It just looks like an LCD now. Looking at it is now a much less pleasurable experience.

Big difference in the red intensity. Bottom left of the wallpaper where there is a pink blob in the middle of the red, very clear difference between the two screen shots.
