What's your wedding band made of? (some are tungsten carbide, which is a 9 on the mohs scale).
=========
A little concerned that @WilliamG was able to scratch his with a key.
I do have the Space Black DLC coated Watch (my second one now). We're NOT talking about aluminum guys. The DLC coating on the watch in incredibly resistant to abuse. 2+ years on my first watch through everything I could throw at it...not a scratch!
None of us yet knows what particulate was used for the Space Grey iPhone X. I was hoping it was DLC - just a different colour / combination of carbon for the phone. But, if it scratches that easily, it certainly isn't.
I know some people had complaints about the black link bracelet - that's also coated using the PVD process, but it's a thinner coating than the watch body...not sure if it's using the DLC particulate, but it is thinner and will show signs of wearing thin over time (or through repetitive, abrasive use).
I guess we'll see how durable the SG iPhone X is in real use. Rocking mine naked...we'll see how it does.![]()
Heh....you only have that short return period.Ha- it is. Honestly my ring has been through the ringer (sorry) and doesn't have a single scratch on it
Good to know that's why it scratches the iPhone so easily.
Micro scratches are driving me crazy.. tempted to return this one and get a new one lol. Someone stop me
Heh +1 Yep it's definitely a finger print magnet!!!No scratches whatsoever on my X and no case here.
However, damn does it attract finger prints. My phone looks like I was eating a bucket of chicken every time I pick it up.

You really need to stop confusing them in your verbiage. There's absolutely no chance the coating on the space grey iPhone X is the same as on the Apple Watch. As you said, the space grey Apple Watch holds up super well. The iPhone X? Not so much...
Are we sure on that? I certainly hope it’s right...Space Black Apple Watch = DLC coated stainless steel
Huh? We saw that Apple removed the comments about DLC from the websites and marketing materials after Series 0, but all indications are that they haven't changed the finish whatsoever. Are we sure on that? I certainly hope it’s right...
Huh? Because people like the shiny stainless steel?I'm confused, why would apple put a different coating on one phone and not the other. Wouldn't they apply the same coating to both phones?
I follow you so far, so why put a coating on the SS band, on the space gray but not the silver phone? We're talking about the PVD coating on the stainless steel band...nothing to do with the glass.![]()
Then why have different coloured watches?I follow you so far, so why put a coating on the SS band, on the space gray but not the silver phone?
I cant seem to find any information or the usual Youtube scratch tests on the subject.
Does the iPhone X in space grey have the same scratch resistant DLC coating as the space black Apple Watch?
I have the silver iPhone X and the raw stainless steel is showing scratches already. I knew this would happen as I have a stainless steel Apple Watch, however I never realised the space black Apple Watch had a more resistant coating until after I ordered my X.
I wanted the space grey iPhone X but chose the silver in the end because I thought if it scratched just as easily as the raw stainless steel then it would be the better option to hide scratches. However since reading that the space black Apple Watch it very resilient to scratching I want to buy the space grey version of the iPhone X.
Can those who purchased the space grey iPhone X or those who have both shed any light on the subject?
Yep, and we saw another MR member here pretty much demolish theirs in a mountain bike accident. With sufficient force, you're doing to impact the coating as the stainless steel underneath is soft enough to be damaged. The coating isn't thick enough to be structural.I got the Space Black Apple Watch and I still managed to scratch it. It fell on sidewalk.
see this is what I was missing. I thought both had SS bands, that were of the same color. I never really noticed that the space gray band didn't include a shiny SS band. I picked up the silver phone without really digging deep into which color I wanted mostly because I'll be slapping a case on the phone anyways. For variety. Having a charcoal coloured band on the Space Grey complements the colour of the back
Exactly!! What colour the phone actually is doesn't matter nearly so much when people are putting a case on it. Both phones have that thin strip of black before the metal edge that is visible from a case - so, in reality, both phones have a black front this year.see this is what I was missing. Heh...I didn't think that I flamed Mike at all. What the member was asking in theory before getting flamed...lol
Was why not put a protective coating on both color phones.
For the silver protective in wa la, clear coat...lol
Apple is annoying, all they had to do was go with brushed stainless steel which still would have had some shine but been very very hard they scratch.
I wonder if there will be protective films to apply on the band to protect from micro scratches.
Heh...I didn't think that I flamed Mike at all.(that's why I use smiley faces so much - so people know that I'm not being pissy - there's no tone in text). Old habit from the irc days where you could get banned from a channel pretty quick if one of the Ops took a comment the wrong way.
Edit: I was thinking about ceramic...but what Apple should do is see if Corning could bake them a shell that would be impervious to scratches and also offer very good shatter resistance.
I was meaning the X chassis. I agree the Watch is DLC; didn’t read your comment properly.Huh? We saw that Apple removed the comments about DLC from the websites and marketing materials after Series 0, but all indications are that they haven't changed the finish whatsoever.
Or, what point where you making?![]()
Yeah, that's the big question - what particulates did they actually use for their PVD process and how durable is it going to be. Heh....to repeat the subject of the thread.I was meaning the X chassis. I agree the Watch is DLC.

The only way people can actually enjoy the sides and the back is to go naked....which a lot of people have a hard time with...especially with how fragile this phone is.
Heh....NOOOO!!! Sorry, can't watch those. It's going to take a few months of running this naked for me to be comfortable that it's not going to get destroyed (or I'll drop it and its replacement will go in the Apple silicone case). The video I found gives me hope...
Though other drop tests have been less positive, to be fair.
Actually, I'd say this is as grippy as a lot of the aluminum phones....more so than some of them. The glass back probably makes the phone more slippery. Flirting with disaster.
