No scratches whatsoever on my X and no case here.

However, damn does it attract finger prints. My phone looks like I was eating a bucket of chicken every time I pick it up.

Do you have the SG version?

I'm confused, why would apple put a different coating on one phone and not the other. Wouldn't they apply the same coating to both phones?

I wondered the same thing. Why not just coat them both in scratch resistant material.

Because it’s an additional manufacturing process that costs money. Polished stainless steel already presents as chrome, so why spend more to add minor scratch protection.

See here all the possible finishes with PVD. I’m digging chocolate or gunmetal. Or even more fun colours like blue or dark green.

I like what Spain72 said here: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f275/pvd-dlc-considerations-557946.html

There's likely a multitude of colours that could be created that would be approaching DLC for hardness. Apple obviously was able to have these components manufactured in a timely manner - they cut their teeth on PVD on the Apple Watch - so they can elect to utilize it for any number of future products.

I really want my next Mac Mini DLC coated...but I think I'd have to pay someone to do that...methinks Apple won't be that nice to us. :)

I'd love to see them do that to the entire Mac lineup actually - be another differentiator between them and the competition. Something you can easily point to, to demonstrate that the Mac is a premium product. (now, if only they can make sure the internals are the latest and greatest) :)

I think it would be nice on things that are portable. iMacs are much less likely to get scratched than the mobile devices. As long as whatever coating they do on MBP or iPad is not glossy, I'm all for it. Matte black MBP or iPad would be nice.

Apple is annoying, all they had to do was go with brushed stainless steel which still would have had some shine but been very very hard they scratch.

Brushed stainless is just as soft as polished stainless, it’s just been ‘pre scratched’ so it hides small scratches better than the polished metal. But it’s definitely not very very hard to scratch. I have plenty of scratches and marks on my brushed stainless Apple Watch link band.

I cant seem to find any information or the usual Youtube scratch tests on the subject.

Does the iPhone X in space grey have the same scratch resistant DLC coating as the space black Apple Watch?

I have the silver iPhone X and the raw stainless steel is showing scratches already. I knew this would happen as I have a stainless steel Apple Watch, however I never realised the space black Apple Watch had a more resistant coating until after I ordered my X.

I wanted the space grey iPhone X but chose the silver in the end because I thought if it scratched just as easily as the raw stainless steel then it would be the better option to hide scratches. However since reading that the space black Apple Watch it very resilient to scratching I want to buy the space grey version of the iPhone X.

Can those who purchased the space grey iPhone X or those who have both shed any light on the subject?

you made the right choice on getting the silver one. i got the space grey and now it has a tiny scratch on the side and the coating came off. I haven't use the phone that much so I'm really not sure where the scratch came from. here's a picture of my phone. the scratch is on the lower left side

I’m just going to come out and say this..

You have to use a case on this phone if you are a person that can not deal with wear and tear. Whether it’s the silver or the space gray, it doesn’t matter, both will have its down falls as far as being able to stand up to every day usage while not being in a case. This is just the way it is with this phone, Apple gave us a very delicate $1000+ Phone.

Obviously either phone will scratch without a case on it, that was never questioned. My reply was to ask if the previous poster got the mark in the photo whilst using it without a case. if he did then it won't worry me because I never use my iPhones without a case and the part of the phone will never be exposed.

I only use Apple cases so I will go with whichever finish keeps the speaker portion of the phone scratch free for as long as possible whilst exposed in an Apple case for the next year until the new model arrives.

It looks like the "scratch" is at the border meeting the glass and the SS? If so, doesn't look like it is really a scratch.

Very true. Although I am very careful with all my tech. I always use a case and screen glass. I am only interested in the DLC coating for the bottom exposed part of the phone when using an Apple case because everything else will be protected so doesnt matter.

I don't want to take the phone out the case to sell in a years time and have a scratched up bottom portion but everywhere else is like new.
I've had the Apple leather on my space gray X since I got it last Friday, and the exposed part has held up very well. Fingerprints show up very easily, but once wiped off, it still looks flawless, and I've been putting the phone in all sorts of pockets.

The iPhone X is the most slippery iPhone I have ever owned ('Ive upraded every year since the 1st generation) and have always used them without a case, even for the glass backed iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s (6s Plus and 7 Plus used an ultra thin case). The X was constantly sliding off of the armrest of my sofa, having it on my thigh while sitting down and always sliding around my passenger leather car seat. It definitely needs a case because of the glass back. I went naked for a few days and gave up, so I started using https://www.totalleecase.com/products/thin-iphone-x-case?variant=51152985926 in Jet Black, which maintains the glass look and thin design, perfect cutouts for buttons, speaker, Lightning port, it covers the stainless band and feels naked and is no longer sliding around.

This isn't an ad, just a tip for iPhone X users who are considering using it without some type of case.

Even the stainless steel used on the Apple Watch, which is 316 L, scratches very easily. Part of why the scratches are So easily identifiable on the iPhone X silver stainless is because of the high shine. It just shows so easily, but they can be removed for the majority with a Cape Cod cloth.

I had considered going naked this time as the X just looks soooo good. Within minutes of having it out of the box though I was like "this needs to go straight in a case". Mine is SG and the exposed band at the bottom has no scratches on it at all and it has been in my jeans pocket etc.

At night I place it on a wireless charger so no chance of it getting scratched up by the lightning plug either.

I had trouble seeing it properly too. It’s either that tiny white mark which looks more like dust on the bottom left corner or the white patch about quarter of the way up the left side. But this might be a reflection and he said tiny and this patch is like a cm

Yeah, I really can't see the scratch either. Does look like there's a screen protector on it.

Does anyone else think that, since Belkin offers that corning glass screen protector, that they shouldn't also make one for the backs of 8/8+/X?? :)

This is day 4 with running my SG naked. Not a mark. Going to keep rocking it naked unless something disastrous happens. :) Then I'll likely toss it (or its replacement) into a case and eat one of my AC+ incidents.

It will not survive a fall unscathed....I know that and am prepared for that. The phone is absolutely gorgeous on its own...want to enjoy that. Covering it up removes a lot of that beauty and elegance. (heh, no, let's not turn this into a case vs naked debate - to each their own)

Edit: Also be the best way to assess just how durable the PVD coating is. If it gets scratched, then I somehow let it come into contact with metal...or something similarly hard and sharp enough.

Thanks for sharing, I feel vindicated for choosing Silver now.

The glass back probably makes the phone more slippery. Flirting with disaster.
Compared to my 7+ that aluminum was slick as hell. The glass is grippy in comparison. At least in your hands. On your clothes just laying on the couch it will slide right off.
The aluminum back phones in your hand was definitely more slippy

Woke up this morning, took out my iPhone X my otter box case, and noticed a small scuff/scratch on the bottom left side of the phone. Thinking it was a smudge, proceeded to clean it. My heart fell when I️ realized it was a scratch.

Sigh...it was meant to happen, but didn’t expect it to happen when in a case. My wedding band might have scratched it at some point.

Anyone else? Anyone else have a scuff already? :(

<- looks up at the subject line. If any thread is going to turn into a "Woe is me, I scuffed my new shiny", I think this one's a better candidate:

or this one:

...just a suggestion. :)

My Silver was delivered with a mark which I returned the next day. I am on the fence about trying one more time or sticking with my plus model. I didn't think on the SG model they would look that bad but apparently by your post its quite obvious.
