Woke up this morning, took out my iPhone X my otter box case, and noticed a small scuff/scratch on the bottom left side of the phone. Thinking it was a smudge, proceeded to clean it. My heart fell when I️ realized it was a scratch.

Sigh...it was meant to happen, but didn’t expect it to happen when in a case. My wedding band might have scratched it at some point.

Anyone else? Anyone else have a scuff already? :(
SG or silver? I don't use third party cases because none of them have that felt protective lining Apple cases do.

<- looks up at the subject line. If any thread is going to turn into a "Woe is me, I scuffed my new shiny", I think this one's a better candidate:

or this one:

...just a suggestion. :)

Yes please only post if you have the SG model and can comment on its scratch resistance.

It is the SG model....and from this scratch...not very strong

Be careful using 3rd party cases that are tight. My friend has the silver iphone X and got microabrasions all along the band from dust trapped in his super tight case. Ive been running my space grey X, naked or in Apple's silicon case and it still looks brand new.

Same here. No scratches at all. I put it in my back pocket every day.

Yup once the silver starts showing through for whatever reason through use, there's no going back, whereas the silver will stay the same color regardless of scratches which I would expect and not mind considering it is stainless steel. Granted it is a demo unit but we are yet to see the durability Apple has given with this coating.

Mine arrived today and has gone straight into a black Apple leather case.

It’s a thing of simple beauty...

Have you been using this without a case on it?

not really. i tried not using it as much as i can because i don't have a case yet, i bought a rhino shield crash guard and brand skin and both are still pre-order, it sucks but it is what it is

well it's more of like the coating was scratch off the border. still looks annoying tho lol

I got my SG X on launch day and it still looks brand new. No case or screen protector and I‘m not treating it THAT carefully:
- Goes into my jeans pocket (slim fit, so it constantly rubs against it) and I also had it in the pocket with my keys a few times
- Gets thrown around in the cup holders of my car
- Is kind of not carefully put on my desk (I usually slide it a few cm before it is lifted off)
- Was in several jacket pockets that have a zipper it has to slide past.

I just inspected it and no visible scratches. Guess it‘s only a matter of time until I see „the silver“.

If anyone has a line on a mohs scratch test on the DLC watch (the body, not the band), I'd love to see it.

We do see that the PVD coating on the SG iPhoneX won't stand up to a mohs 5 scratch test in this video (about 1:15 in):

I had the SG AW. Scratched very easily. Plus once it scratched there’s nothing you can do. So that’s why I went with the Silver X. So far after a week of endless use no scratches. Plus even if it does it’s easily buffed out.

No-one's talking about the space grey apple watch - that's Aluminum. The Space BLACK apple watch has a PVD coating similar to the iPhone X, only on the apple watch it's DLC.

As bad (not) as that looks, I saw silver units with 10x worse looking scratches. That picture of the SG was ‘toned-down’ in terms of the scratch marks compared to the Silver ones I saw.

I compared 5-6 of each colour, and ALL the silver ones were very visibly marked.

Now, if I had a silver one, I’d rock it naked because the scratches are just nice character. One polish just before resell is enough.

Watching that video plus a bit of Wikipedia to get some context I think that’s pretty good for a phone. Unless you regularly come into contact with substances harder than steel the phone should be fairly safe, and some basic precautions should seal the deal, really.

I have gone with case but no screen protector since the 5S and don’t feel any need to deviate from that approach with the X.

No scratches whatsoever on my X and no case here.

However, damn does it attract finger prints. My phone looks like I was eating a bucket of chicken every time I pick it up.

LOL :);):)

I see two options:

1: Silver is the best option to get away with smudge - you can't see much !

2: Space grey love smudge - that's only encourage you to clean up every time :) (good for hygiene freak)

Is it possible to coat the band and back of the X with something like cquartz as an additional protective coating? Same that is used on cars? I have the silver X and go with no case. Not overly concerned about scratches since I’ve had the stainless steel AW and while it scratched I’ve had success with a capcod cloth.

Read a couple paragraphs on that cQuartz page. Funny...they can't seen to decide if their nano particles are ceramic or fibre glass. :) In either case, I don't think I'd want to be the one to experiment with that....you could try it if you like. :)

Yes, lots of people have said how useful the capecod cloths are on the regular SS Apple Watch. You can't use them on the PVD coatings though - you could actually rub away the PVD coating, or at least make it a lot thinner, reducing its life.

We don't have enough data to understand how durable the SG iPhone X PVD coating is going to be - hopefully more information will be forthcoming from Apple soon. We do know that it can be scratched with other metals, but that's not definitive either.

we have the same usage scenario, no cases or any protectors, using it as intended and not pampering it but no scratches at all on my space gray. I acually bumped it on concrete this one time and i was afraid of looking at it since i really heard a thump and a dent was very likely (my iphone 6s bumped into soft wood before and had a dent) but lo and behold not a dent, not even a scratch, the coating or stainless steel definitely stood up to my unintended "test" of hitting the top part on pure concrete post.

I have a Power Support Air Jacket on order for my X. Been using them for almost a decade now, nothing better, covers everything, very thin yet quite protective, no exposed surfaces.

I have a space grey X that I got on launch day and so far it’s been holding up great even though I’ve been keeping it naked. I’ve pretty much always used a case on my phone even through I rarely drop them, but when I took the case on my 7+ off to get ready to sell it I discovered that some dust or something had gotten in between the case and the phone and there were a number of marks on the back of the phone. I figured that if the phone is going to get marks when it’s in a case then why bother with the case and I’m planning to keep my X naked.

I actually did accidentally drop the X onto the bottom corner from about 3 feet on a tile floor and the phone still looks flawless. I think the steel can handle impacts better than aluminum.

Also have the SG- love the phone but only reason I am contemplating a change to Silver is that the SG band just isn't as "smooth" as the pure stainless one. Anybody notice this? Almost has a weird gripping to it, must be the coating but don't love the way it feels.

Having purchased the SG model, I can confirm it is more resistant to scratches than the silver version I had previously. I used it naked for a couple of days and it does not have a scratch on it. Very pleased with it.

Which is due to the PVD coating. But curious how that holds in durability after a years of use.
