Is it possible to coat the band and back of the X with something like cquartz as an additional protective coating? Same that is used on cars? I have the silver X and go with no case. Not overly concerned about scratches since I’ve had the stainless steel AW and while it scratched I’ve had success with a capcod cloth.
I have the same idea as you did. Wonder if you ended up using any silica coating such as Cquartz on your iPhone X. I am really tempted to try. At least it gives 9H hardness which is better than nothing.

They are both an embarrassment to a device that is demanding over 1k

I won't go to deep, and focus on the topic which is the Space Gray variant!

Yes it does scratch, and there is no getting away from that. Case it and dust or sand particles from your pocket will get in there and wreck havoc, rock it naked and well...you know the rest of how that goes? Apple finatics will say it's stronger than US steel until they drop it and get brought back to reality.

I've gone through a few exchange for various hardware issues, and I will say I've inspected all my units before giving them back and I did spot a couple of random scratches on the band, the bottom especially, but also other random areas on the band as well that were covered with an $40 Apple silicone case.

Honestly Apple hardware while looking beautiful is made like cheap imported garbage...not being an Apple hater, I've been a supporter for over a decade and after using a rock solid 7plus for a year and now using this delicate little flower makes me want to go back to a plus and see what they do next year to fix the it's so delicate issues.

I will say that the surgical stainless bands used on iPhone X are very prone to scratching easily, which does not take much effort as you indicated. Apples highlight was when they used the 7000 series aluminum on the iPhone 6s/7.

In comparison to the stainless used on the silver iPhone X bands, the Apple Watch 316 L stainless is also a strong metal, but scratches very easily. But it certainly does not feel cheap by any standards to me.

PVD adds scratch resistance. I’ve seen this used in other objects and they seem to be less prone to showing scratches
Also the Dark color of the Space Greys stainless steel masks the micro scratches as opposed to the silver highlighting them

That's true about the PVD coating on the space gray version. And then with the regular silver X bands, scratches can be polished out, where the PVD cannot . So both phones have their own caveats.

A phone shouldn't even be using Stainless Steel for anything, never mind one something painted or dipped, that's a whole other topic especially if they aren't like super baking it to avoid scratching. Those reports are 100% accurate about the phone just magically getting scratches, SS is an easy surface to penatrate, especially with a phone that gets used an enormous amount of time through out a day, month, year...Look at an old iPod...lol

Either way, I'm a fan of the 6s, 7, 8, no shinny scratchpad material. The X is going to be apples biggest replaced iPhone, you will have people who just don't know any better trying to return phones with Warrenties, Apple care, etc etc because their phones look extremely worn.

I will also tell you the reports of scratched screens is off the charts, like insane from what I'm reading and hearing. Try and go get a screen protector put on at Apple right now. They are sold out everywhere for glass screens because of the easily scratched glass. That's another $42 bucks to Apple? I'm cool with making money, but don't tell us you are using materials that are amongst the strongest available only to really just see a pretty phone that gets worn from just breathing on it. Just my take...

I totally agree what you said about the use of SS on phone. When the leaked photos about iPhone X came out, I hoped the band is not SS or chrome. I prefer 6s, 7 and 8 as they use non shinny material for the band which is more reasonable for daily use. People complain about aluminium being slippery but with a decent phone case, it solves the issue entirely.

Brushed stainless?

I feel the same exact way but after unsung the X for a few days I just couldn’t go back to the old hardware. As much as the SS banding is a PITA and sucks, There are just too many other good things about the X that the SS doesn’t warrant going back to an earlier model.

People like you have probably never owned any luxury products made of stainless steel... pffffff.... where to start

Stainless is a very generalized metal and is used commonly throughout various pieces of jewelry. I would not classify this as a luxury product, especially if it's only use for silver the iPhone X bands being that's the topic. Luxury would be like 18 karat gold for more of an appropriate comparison.

As Sean76 predicted, I'm one of those who returned an iPhone X this way

The screen is just toooo soft, gets scratched, carved by random dust particles that you have on your desk, as a protector hater, It's sad that I'll be using protectors on the second one too :(

As whizkid11 - I also like the device and the experience, but the issues are demotivating

I cant seem to find any information or the usual Youtube scratch tests on the subject.

Does the iPhone X in space grey have the same scratch resistant DLC coating as the space black Apple Watch?

I have the silver iPhone X and the raw stainless steel is showing scratches already. I knew this would happen as I have a stainless steel Apple Watch, however I never realised the space black Apple Watch had a more resistant coating until after I ordered my X.

I wanted the space grey iPhone X but chose the silver in the end because I thought if it scratched just as easily as the raw stainless steel then it would be the better option to hide scratches. However since reading that the space black Apple Watch it very resilient to scratching I want to buy the space grey version of the iPhone X.

Can those who purchased the space grey iPhone X or those who have both shed any light on the subject?
It looks like the "scratch" is at the border meeting the glass and the SS? If so, doesn't look like it is really a scratch.
It looks to me like the scratch is on the glass bezel not the stainless steel.

I have the SG and feel more comfortable with a case on it so I can use it without worry of scratching. I found a wonderful case. It is transparent but is tinted black. I cannot even tell that I have a case on my phone. It's an amazing case:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074319TRV

I first tried a clear case and it made the phone look silver, for some reason. This tinted black one is perfect for SG.

Which exactly color you mean? Transparent black or Metallic black?
