Face ID works well as did Touch ID
Most likely the next version of Face ID will work better and be more sophisticated
Apple could give us both (Touch ID
Under screen ). For those situations where one doesn’t work.......like when you’re wearing gloves use Face ID
Wearing Sungkasses that don’t work use Touch ID etc
Wishful thinking but not reality

I’m probably repeating something I’ve said before but what needs to be remembered is FaceID is in its extreme infancy. It’s also the first time this exact technology has been implemented in a smartphone. Fingerprint sensors were already more mature when TouchID was first implemented and it only kept getting better.

What I’d say is let’s see how we feel about it next generation and a couple down the line.

My only issue with FaceID is I have long arms which appears to exceed the range of the FaceID sensors. Despite this, FaceID is still a big improvement over TouchID.

Hi everyone - just as the question says, (particularly iPhone 6s and 7 users since there was faster Touch ID)

Do you miss Touch ID? This is the main thing holding me back from upgrading my 7.

NOPE! Although I do miss the Home button as "gestures" that replace the Home button are just a tad slow for my fingers. I'm wondering if my glass screen protector might be part of the problem.

I use Touch ID all the time for things like coffees and apps for banking and also using the London Underground.

I’m travelling to Canada this Christmas so the phone will be a BIT cheaper than the UK, just wondering if I’ll miss my 7?

Thoughts?

Is Face ID cumbersome compared to Touch ID?
I love it. So much quicker and easier than touch ID. I don't miss it at all (really surprised me)

Good post. Sometimes I think the expectations are too high thinking that Face ID should be perfect because the price of the iPhone X, when that’s not how technology works. Technology should be a maturity of a process and it will continue to improve through further experimentation, improving hardware sensors, software updates, etc. Face ID will become more predominant over the course of time.

I miss it.

I do like Face ID a lot when it works. However, it fails quite a bit. My touch id (on the multiple phones I had with it) probably only failed to work a handful of times in years (usually if my fingers were wet).

Face ID still has issues recognizing me with sunglasses on. I have slight light sensitivity (especially after I've had a migraine). Anytime I am outside I have sunglasses on. Maybe 1/5 times it unlocks with my sunglasses on (so it can do it). But most of the time it doesn't. It has issues if I have a hat on (not a face covering hat). It misses often if the phone is angled a little bit away from my face. I'd say I end up having to hit the screen off button and try again 6-7 times per day. I enter my password 2-3 times per day instead. In one day it misses more than touch id did in multiple years.

Hopefully it gets better with the next phone.

As far as with apps (bank, etc); it works fine.

I miss it. I'm coming from the iPhone 5s... I've heard that touch Id got even better than that, but I never had problems w/ touch ID on my iPhone 5s. Mornings are tricky for me.. When I'm in bed looking at the phone, it barely ever opens the phone.... I agree that I won't return the phone, but definitely miss touch ID

I find FaceID to be annoying. It locks every single time you close the phone, even for a second. It puts that spinning thing in your face while it processes you. About 30% of the time it would fail and I'd have to enter my passcode. I tried it for 3 or 4 months. Finally shut FaceID off. I just use the passcode now. Honestly, I like the phone better without it. But yes, I'm *REALLY* missing touchID now. Thinking about selling the iPhone X while it still has value and going back to my iPhone 7 Plus. I think I'd be happier.

FaceID has been flawless for me. The only time it has trouble is when I'm in bed and trying to prop myself up to look at it while it's still docked on my bedside table but I've learned to just skip that song & dance and just swipe and wait for the "enter passcode" button to show up.

I have a work iPhone 8 and I will admit that picking up the phone and unlocking simply by resting my finger on the button is nice.

I’m sorry that you’re having that experience with Face ID on your iPhone X. My experience is the opposite. Maybe a success rate of about 90% or more on my iPhone X and it’s even better and a bit faster on my XS Max. You might be able to find an iPhone 8/plus for real cheap. That way it’s still an upgrade from the 7 plus you had. You’ll get the Touch ID back along with the A11 chip of the iPhone X. Unfortunately for you and others alike, it seems that Apple is dead set on moving away from Touch ID in favor of Face ID on their product line. This years iPhones and iPads only have Face ID implemented.

What spinning thing? My iPhone X has always unlocked automatically using FaceID.

I most definitely miss it.
FaceID can be pretty much instantaneous and seamless. To me, it has happened no more than 5 times, since I own the X (last December). Most of the time I just find myself adjusting the angle I hold my phone at, in order for it to actually see I'm there. I would gladly give it up for TouchID, even for its first version (I had it for years on the 6).

Don't miss it a bit. Touch ID feels like a carriage instead of a car now. Full screen is way better.

The number of times FaceID fails for me are so few, and it's integrated so well into the system, I almost forget it's there. A year and three devices with FaceID later (X, then XS Max, and now my new iPad Pro), I still love it and don't miss TouchID even a little.

Face ID has worked consistently for me on the X, XS Max and now on the new iPad Pro too. Apple Pay now works 100% of the time now rather than the hit or miss implementation with Touch ID.. oops I’m at the home screen again, sigh.

I don’t know of anyone who has had any issues with Touch ID either, how hard it it to look at your phone when swiping up the display anyway? I think that people who say it fails most of the time or even 1 in 3 times they unlock are either talking rubbish or just not looking at the phone, who knows. The fact that my phones can be unlocked whilst connected to a magnetic dash mount on the center console of my car proves that this tech is damn robust.

If it fails with your sunglasses and you need to wear often them because of your condition then turn off ‘require attention for face id’ in settings.

FaceID works better on the XS and is faster than the X. Remember when touch id fist came out, and on the phone after it it goes instant quick and the standard was set. That's the XS, it's now INSTANT!

BUT.....

With FaceID, after it scans your face, you then have to preform and extra step every time and "Swipe up" on the screen to get to the home screen. I've had just about every iphone and it was easier to get into the phone with the old thumbprint sensor, TouchID, as you didn't have to move or swipe anything to get into the phone.

Apple needs to add a toggle to give the flexibility to do this and you can go here and ask them to. If enough people ask, they will add a toggle and give us more flexibility.

I don’t disagree with some of your sentiments, especially being that Face ID can be somewhat particular about how it unlocks, which may affected based on the [angle and lighting], but if you were to resort back to the home button, I would at least consider the iPhone 8 over the iPhone 7, mainly being that it was still see support longer, and it’s a more refreshed version of the iPhone 7.

I don't even remotely miss it. I did think with Apple Pay on the phone was better when you could hold your phone near the NFC terminal with your thumb resting on the touch ID sensor to pay in one motion, but I don't pay with my phone anymore now that I have an Apple Watch.
