I do at times. If you're one of those people that had your phone unlocked before looking at it, then you will miss it. FaceID for the most part works. At first it worked great, but every blue moon when you want to take a quick glance at something, you have to hit the power button and stare again.

I'm going to take the attention setting off and see if that works better for me, cause having to pick it up every time is a PITA. I think I'm more annoyed at having to swipe up than I am of FaceID, even though I wouldn't be able to see notifications without it.

I realize that my response on page 2 had a lot more than just Touch ID in the discussion. I think my feelings about "missing" Touch ID are part of a group of changes that all fall into the category of user interface. So, yeah, I miss the old interface. The question is whether I'll grow to like these better before the return period expires in January (thank you, Apple, for the extended holiday return period).

I am not sure what you mean by having to hit the power button to "stare again". In addition to taking the attention setting off, make sure your Tap to Wake and Raise to Wake are enabled.

Using Apple Pay with Face ID is much better in my opinion because with Face ID you can confirm its registered your face before putting your phone near the terminal. With Touch ID you could put your phone near the terminal with your finger on the home button but sometimes that would fail for me which was really annoying, then I would have to adjust my grip until it re-scanned my finger. Face ID feels more natural and...it just works!

Da*n... trust issues??

I love Face ID. Touch ID was nice, but this is clearly the next step. It works like an  product should.
No, you have it backwards. My wife and I don't have secrets, in fact we share the same password for our phones. I'm still rocking the SE, my wife has an X. But I can't unlock it with Face ID, like I could with Touch ID. It just means it's more inconvenient for me to use her phone than it used to be.

Hi everyone - just as the question says, (particularly iPhone 6s and 7 users since there was faster Touch ID)

Do you miss Touch ID? This is the main thing holding me back from upgrading my 7.

I use Touch ID all the time for things like coffees and apps for banking and also using the London Underground.

I’m travelling to Canada this Christmas so the phone will be a BIT cheaper than the UK, just wondering if I’ll miss my 7?

Thoughts?

Is Face ID cumbersome compared to Touch ID?
Lack of TouchID was my biggest concern with the X. Unlocking is pretty seamless, but I was worried about ApplePay. After using it, I can report that it's just as convenient but a little different. In a way, it's easier than TouchID and probably more intuitive. It's really just double clicking the side button instead of holding the TouchID button. I was worried that the attention feature would be inconvenient, but turns out I'm already looking at the phone to make sure it's going through. It happens so fast you don't even realize it happened. Another thing is that it is probably more secure in that you won't inadvertently activate ApplePay as I often did by double clicking the home button. Double clicking the side button isn't as common and you have to deliberately make that action. Small learning curve, but it's pretty dang quick. The one thing that could possibly be more inconvenient is if you use the Underground pay terminals without looking. I never ApplePay without confirming it's working and it's the right card, so not an issue for me. For others, it could be since it's nice to get taptic feedback on TouchID without even looking that it's working. G*dd*mn it's a nice phone.

Yes, FaceID is horrible while using in bed with one eye closed LOL

and it fails maybe 25% of the time for me. I'd switch back to 7+ or 8+ if I didn't already trade in my phone

I got used to Face ID now. Works 98% of the time and I find it more convenient for Apple Pay, login into my bank apps etc...

The only time I miss Touch ID is when my phone is on my desk and I want to check my text messages.

after few hours of use already forgot touch id and home button, my only complain is face id won't work in landscape mode, maybe this will be improved in future updates

Another vote for not missing Touch ID one bit. I love how developers are and have taken advantage of Face ID in many apps. Love Face ID, I wouldn’t want to ever use Touch ID again, I found that way more inaccurate then Face ID.

Echoing what most others have said. FID does seem natural in use and is fast. I've grown to prefer it in day to day usage, especially with apps that require a passcode.

The only downside is when I use an app, but am not looking at the screen like when I use Shazaam in the car. I have the app shortcut on the notification screen so I used to swipe to the right, press the icon, then press the hold button. For the most part, I could do this without looking at the phone and could keep my eyes on the road. Now I have to look down on the phone in order for FID to unlock it.

While FID seems to be accurate indoors, outdoors, at night, etc., I do find myself having to type in my passcode WAY more than I ever did with TID. Not sure if I'm not holding my phone close enough/far enough or whatever, but that is kind of annoying. Happens maybe 10% of the time.

Only other issue isn't really an issue at all, but a result of having an iPad Pro and iPhone 7 for work. Both of which still use Touch ID and have the 'old' controls. I've already gotten used to just looking at my phone and swiping up, the swiping down for control center. Both of those functions are obviously different on every other Apple device.

Will face ID work say if you are laying in bed, and your phone is on your night stand. I like to lean over and check my phone while its on the night stand without picking it up. And usually I barely have to talk my head off the pillow to do that. Seem like face ID would have trouble with you if were still laying on your bed.

When I wear sunglasses, I miss it
Early in the morning with my face half smooshed into the bed/pillow, I miss it
Lying on my desk with the camera pointed at the ceiling and not my face, I miss it.

In all of these situations FaceID does not work.

This I do notice it has problems unlocking your phone while laying down unless I am laying supine (On my back) and holding the phone above me. If I am laying on either side I have to lift my head up for it to recognize me since half my face is usually buried in my down pillow. If your pillow is a bit harder, it may work just fine.

I thought I would miss it, but Face ID works flawlessly. Not had a single time it hasn't worked.

From Apple’s own Face ID help page:
“Make sure that your eyes, nose, and mouth are fully visible to the TrueDepth camera.
Face ID works with many sunglasses. If you're wearing sunglasses designed to block certain types of light, then your sunglasses might be blocking the infrared light used by the TrueDepth camera. Try using Face ID without your sunglasses.”

Yeah touchID was always hit or miss for me so I'm more than happy with faceID. Much more reliable and I don't have to worry about it not working more than half the time.

Yes, so far my Face ID works with all my sunglasses (I have about 7 pairs because, uh, I like sunglasses). Both polarized and non-polarized, glass and poly-carbonate. I do think some reported some issues with Ray-Ban Wayfarers, so I imagine they may block IR.

Not in the least.

And yes, my credit union and credit card apps all use Face ID, as does 1Password and my HMO’s app. It’s seamless to open them and access my private info.

I’m coming from a 7, so Touch ID was super quick and it worked almost all the time for me. I really loved Touch ID, but I’m a total convert.

Are you set for Attention on or off? My main Oakleys were a no-go, and I tried all mine, several pairs, none worked (I like sunglasses too ...).
