What is irrational, but making me feel a bit strange,is that Face ID works so seamlessly and fast that I almost question if it is really unlocking or bypassing the unlock. With Touch ID I deliberately had to do something and then unlock a secure app. Face ID is so quick that I gives me a sense of less security even though I know it is more secure. I may be poorly explaining my perception but I liked the deliberate unlock and pause that let me know “I did something” to unlock a secured app as opposed to trusting the phone.

Will face ID work say if you are laying in bed, and your phone is on your night stand. I like to lean over and check my phone while its on the night stand without picking it up. And usually I barely have to talk my head off the pillow to do that. Seem like face ID would have trouble with you if were still laying on your bed.

I've run into other cases like this where the angle is wrong and FiD doesn't work where TID did.

nope not at all.. the only thing I haven't done yet is make a contactless payment.. normally it's vending machines but I assume you need to hold the phone up to your face before you pay?

I've had every iPhone since 3GS. I loved TouchID and I've had the X since launch. So far I have to say my feelings go both ways. In many situations FaceID is easier because you don't need to hold the phone a certain way to get your finger on the scanner. However, at certain angles FaceID doesn't work and TouchID would.

For instance I was cooking the other day and I placed my X on top of my coffee maker. It's under the cabinet streaming the football game. Before, I would just unlock it with TouchID. But, due to the angle FaceID didn't work. Small things like that make me feel there are both pros and cons to FaceID and TouchID.

That said, if I had to select one I would go with TouchID. I like being able to log into my phone without looking at it or even taking it out of my pocket. Sure you have the passcode, but it's tough punching in six numbers without looking at the screen. TouchID, overall is easier to use. But, FaceID is just fine as well.
Face ID works when it’s on a table or a desk. Just train it. Mine works on the kitchen table. But of course it has to see your face or even your chin to work.

Yes... no matter how Apple spins it FaceID is slower, fails more, and is not as convenient as touchID. I use to be able to pick up my phone with my thumb on the sensor without looking and by the time i actually look at the screen its' unlocked and waiting for me. FaceID looking at it and swiping up is silly. This is my opinion don't get all uptight about it.

Not one bit. I was skeptical about Face ID. But it's proven to be much faster and much more accurate than I anticipated. It's especially nice to open apps that utilize it and not have to have the extra step of putting your thumb on the button to reauthenticate.

Apple Pay was much smoother than I expected as well.

I thought it was going to be a major step backward and it turned out to be a major step forward.

All of one day in, yes, I do miss Touch ID. With Touch ID, I could unlock with a press - no preliminary tap followed by trying to get the camera pointed at my face and no need for a secondary swipe up. It also seemed faster.

The other interface issue for me is access to the control panel. I use that a lot, and swiping up from the bottom was an easy one-handed gesture. Control panel on the X is either a two-hand job or a two-gesture job (invoke reachability > down swipe upper RH corner).

Minor annoyance: you have to invoke control panel to see the actual battery percentage.
Nope. You raise to wake or tap to wake and swipe up. Basically one to two actions without needing to point at face deliberately.

Not really. It may be because I have attention required off, but I never have to actually "hold the phone up to (my) face" for anything. I just double press the side button while my arm is still sort of at waist level and Face ID has recognized me before I even really realize it and it is ready to "Hold to Reader".

Hi everyone - just as the question says, (particularly iPhone 6s and 7 users since there was faster Touch ID)

Do you miss Touch ID? This is the main thing holding me back from upgrading my 7.

I use Touch ID all the time for things like coffees and apps for banking and also using the London Underground.

I’m travelling to Canada this Christmas so the phone will be a BIT cheaper than the UK, just wondering if I’ll miss my 7?

Thoughts?

Is Face ID cumbersome compared to Touch ID?
Nope.

Not one bit. Having FaceID is like never having to unlock your phone, that is, it's so transparent it is always unlocked.
Really like Face ID. Works like a charm. When I use my iPad and Touch ID it feels old and slow. If my hands are wet it unlocks. In the dark, yep. With my sunglasses on, yes that too. It’s here to stay.

I've had raise to wake turned of since whatever version of iOS introduced it. That was never any inconvenience at all until the X. So I tap and swipe up. But tapping, holding the phone at the right angle, and swiping up is a whole lot more trouble, time and motion than just holding the Home button.

Same thing with ApplePay. With TID, you just hold the Home button and jab the phone at the reader. With FID, you need at least three motions (more if you don't get them in the right order).

I may change my mind, but FID seems like a lot more motions and time. I do want to add that apart from interface changes (or PITAs, depending on your point of view), the hardware itself is gorgeous in every way, a pleasure to handle and generally a real tour de force by Apple's engineering and manufacturing people.

In my experience the phone at least need to be able to see your chin. Obviously if it can't see a face at all Face ID won't work. For me it's still more convenient than the wet finger situation for touch ID.

FWIW, I put on glasses, pulled a hoodie up, and had a bandana pulled up to where it covered my bottom lip - so effectively no neck or chin area being scanned and it worked with almost complete accuracy.

I can cover my chin with my hand and/or be wearing a scarf and it works. It is possible that it "learned" this though after the first couple days. It got very cold here the day my X arrived and I started wearing scarves or jacket collars up past my chin! I can also be wearing a toque, AND sunglasses at the same time as my chin is covered. Still works.

That's incredible!

Yeah, that’s because you have attention off. I need to look at the phone. No matter what, it won’t unlock unless my eyes are open and looking.

I double click the side button, look, and it’s ready to go. I prefer it to Apple Pay with Touch ID.

:D Well, I know the wet thumb thing but it didn't happen too often!

One issue I didn't mention is that I seem to be having trouble in darker lit situations. I've tried re-registering FID but haven't gotten any improvement on that. We'll see; a learning curve is expected.

My posts probably seem very negative. In reality, I'm 50/50 on a return. There's a lot to really like.

Apple Pay and app store download are unintuitive and compromised. No doubt.

Face ID is fantastic.

I was it’s biggest skeptic. Then I got my X. It took all of 3 hours to put Touch ID in the rear view mirror. It’s so effortless it’s like the phone doesn’t have security at all.

I don’t mind Face ID but there are times when it does not work the first time that I miss Touch ID. I would be fine if they went back to Touch ID, but I know that is likely not to happen.
