I laughed at this earlier and then ***** did it with my wife's 7 - twice this afternoon! :D
I do it all the time on my iPad!

My iPad is so old that it doesn’t have Touch ID. In four years of having Touch ID on my iPhones, I’ve never tried to use it on my iPad, and after having the X for a few days, I started trying to swipe on the iPad! That tells you how intuitive Face ID and the swipe gestures are.

I don't miss it one bit. It's awesome unlocking my phone without having to take my gloves off!

Are you set for Attention on or off? My main Oakleys were a no-go, and I tried all mine, several pairs, none worked (I like sunglasses too ...).

Mine is set for off :)

I honestly do not miss it. When I picked up my SE to update apps, I am so used to swiping up on my X that I was doing that on the home screen and kept bringing up the control center.

Yes, so far my Face ID works with all my sunglasses (I have about 7 pairs because, uh, I like sunglasses). Both polarized and non-polarized, glass and poly-carbonate. I do think some reported some issues with Ray-Ban Wayfarers, so I imagine they may block IR.
Haha. Didn't realize there was a "approved" list of sunglasses. The other day I was out ALL day and my polarized wayfarers were a no-go. I fully admit that was extremely annoying. All my sunglasses are polarized, so maybe I need to do a test. Someone should start a thread on "compatible" sunglasses. I would think all decent sunglasses would block IR, no?

I have polarized aviators that had issues the first couple of times using Face ID. Entering the passcode after having it fail essentially "taught" the phone how to recognize me with them on. It's been flawless ever since.

Having polarized sunglasses that block UV rays shouldn't be an issue. If your glasses have lens that block IR light, that's what the phone doesn't like.

My main sunglasses are polarized, and worked from day one. Polarization isn’t the issue, it’s whether they block a certain amount of IR.

The most complaints I’ve seen here and on Twitter are about Ray-Bans.

I am not sure what you mean by having to hit the power button to "stare again". In addition to taking the attention setting off, make sure your Tap to Wake and Raise to Wake are enabled.

Sometimes if it doesn't recognize me, I'll turn it off by hitting power, then raise it again. It usually works the second time.

All decent sunglasses should block UV, yes. IR, no, not necessarily ;)

5 pairs of my 7 are polarized (glass and poly-carbonate) and work fine with Face ID. As do my non-polarized ones.

Don't do that. If it fails, use your passcode. This is part of how it learns your face - and different angles - and adds the information to the Face ID data. If you just turn it off when it fails, the phone will just assume that was not you trying to unlock your phone.

Don’t miss it. But not saying Touch ID is useless. Both technologies are great but prefer Face ID

Negative on my wayfarers. I just tried to teach FaceID 5-10 times, and it still won't recognize me. I will assume this has to be due to the darkness of the glasses and not being able to see my attention. Pretty annoying for this usage. I will mark this as a big downside of the FaceID vs. TouchID argument.

I don't think it has anything to do with the "darkness" but that the RayBan Wayfarers likely block IR. Face ID works fine with my darker glasses, and there are reports it works with mirrored sunglasses, etc.

Yeah, just throwing darts. You and @redRAYZA have anecdotally confirmed it works on your sunglasses. Maybe it's specific to wayfarers as reported in other posts. Perhaps the shape of the lens reflects the IR or it's a message from Apple to get out of the 80's. I don't know. I will try with other sunglasses when I get around to it, but Apple should prioritize a fix to make FaceID wayfarer compatible simply because these sunglasses are dope.

Try turning off the attention awareness features. That's likely your only fix at this point.

I've had every iPhone since 3GS. I loved TouchID and I've had the X since launch. So far I have to say my feelings go both ways. In many situations FaceID is easier because you don't need to hold the phone a certain way to get your finger on the scanner. However, at certain angles FaceID doesn't work and TouchID would.

For instance I was cooking the other day and I placed my X on top of my coffee maker. It's under the cabinet streaming the football game. Before, I would just unlock it with TouchID. But, due to the angle FaceID didn't work. Small things like that make me feel there are both pros and cons to FaceID and TouchID.

That said, if I had to select one I would go with TouchID. I like being able to log into my phone without looking at it or even taking it out of my pocket. Sure you have the passcode, but it's tough punching in six numbers without looking at the screen. TouchID, overall is easier to use. But, FaceID is just fine as well.
