Having the S8 active, Note 8 and iPhone X, the X has the best screen IMO. But like someone else said, it’s negligible, they’re all great screens.

Displaymate has released their findings on the iPhone X display and has crowned it the best ever smartphone display eclipsing the note 8.

http://www.displaymate.com/iPhoneX_ShootOut_1a.htm

Maybe this can ease up the criticism Timmy gets for his choices in the future of the iPhone. He chose well to go with Samsung instead of LG or any other supplier. One line in that review says it all:

" First we need to congratulate Samsung Display for developing and manufacturing the outstanding OLED display hardware in the iPhone X."

Hopefully this will push Android to sort out its colour management.

Samsung need to start being clearer with its display modes and perhaps modify its adoptive mode to be more realistic.

Regarding brightness, i have never had an issue with my S6. I do wonder if the high brightness of the X is a reason for Apple warning about screen burn in.

However, whilst it has stellar performance. the great big perma-tu*d cut out of the top negates it as a good display in my opinion.

The iPhone X has the better screen. It’s close, but Apple pulled it off. This is the best screen I have ever looked at in mobile device. Putting it next to an S8 or Note 8, yeah they both look amazing , but the iPhone is just a bit better. The color over saturation on the Samsung is the what turns me off. I like to see more vibrant but natural colors. Not these reds that look fake. I will take the iPhone X over the Samsung all day.

It has always come down to preference. These tests are done with measuring specs. And not everyone cares to have a color accurate or "natural" looking display. Every time I show people the "basic" mode for better color accuracy on their Galaxy phone, they immediately say, "No way." The prefer the pop of the adaptive mode. This is 100% of the time. To be honest, I don't think most people even notice the difference going from device to device bar any obvious defects in the display. These days all high end devices have amazing looking displays. It's like TVs, people see one TV and say, "Wow great picture." Then they look at another TV that got a better rating for picture quality from the tech reviewers, and still say, "Wow, great picture." Not even noticing any difference.

I disagree just a bit about natural colors. I have had Samsung phones in the past, and I got really tired of the Over saturation of the screen. It really did bother me. I have always liked the cooler LCDs to the way over blown colors of Samsung’s OLEDs. Now I think the S8 and Note 8 have great displays that don’t Over saturate nearly as much as they use to, but it’s still there. I like colors to pop, but not look fake. I think some of the colors on the Samsung displays do.

I don't disagree that there are people that prefer color accurate displays, but it would seem that most people including a lot of tech reviewers prefer the pop of the adaptive display. Not saying one is the "right" preference over the other. It also depends on what you're used to looking at. Most people you talk to that went from an iPhone to a Galaxy almost always say, "my pictures look so much nicer on this display." Again, not the most color accurate, but very pleasing to most people that aren't fixed on perfect color accuracy. All preference.

Yeah I will agree it’s a preference thing, but I certainly would not say the Samsung is better because is Over saturated. Sure maybe there a people that like it better that way, but I sure don’t.

Are people surprised about Displaymate's results? I think some here thought the note 8 would win because it's a 1st party device, some even suggesting Apple's oled displays were basically beta and/or old gen displays from Samsung.

Not to say Displaymate is the gospel, but people consider it a reference source for judging display quality.

I guess people have preference but wouldn't it make sense to have color accuracy be a major factor in display quality? It's the basic "what you see is how it should look and intended." Over saturated can be seen as inaccurate.

It's why it's recommended that tvs be calibrated when purchased.

Agreed, I wonder if the old Apple adage applies here though of "Apple making something better''

''But what makes the iPhone X the Best Smartphone Display is the impressive Precision Display Calibration that Apple developed that transforms the OLED hardware into a superbly accurate, high performance, and gorgeous display!!''

Looks like Apple wasted a couple billion investing in LG display technology. The Samsung displays have helped them get top honors from DisplayMate!
Now lets see how DxO rates the camera :) Pixel is the top dog so far....by a large margin.

I still choose the Note 8 display. It just has a more crispy sharpness to it, when I compared the two. I probably wouldn't notice the accuracy of color calibration unless it was drastic. But if this pushes Samsung and other manufacturers for better color calibration then I don't see how that hurts.

When I watch Erica Griffin's reviews. I'm truly lost when she speaks on that topic.

How did it do on video?

Here is a summary.
“DXO” said:
Test summary
With a Photo score of 101, the Apple iPhone X achieves the best results so far for still images, edging out the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the previous joint leaders in the Photo ranking, by one point. Compared to its cousin iPhone 8 Plus, the X improves noticeably on Zoom performance, but also does better in terms of Exposure, Color, Texture, Noise and Artifacts. Other key strengths in still image mode include very good exposures and HDR images, accurate color rendering, good detail with low noise, as well as a natural-looking bokeh effect in Portrait mode.

For video, the X doesn’t quite rise to the same high-water mark, achieving a video sub-score of 89 points. With its key strengths good exposure with fast convergence during lighting changes, accurate color rendering as well as fast and accurate autofocus and effective video stabilization, the X’s scores are almost identical to the iPhone 8 Plus’s. Its overall score of 97 puts the iPhone X into joint second place with the Huawei Mate 10 in the current DxOMark Mobile overall rankings, just behind the Google Pixel 2 with 98 points.

I read that the Samsungs are so overly saturated that a decent amount of detail is lost in movies. Compared to the X where it's not so. You might notice :p enjoy the Sammy. Is a great phone

I haven't noticed that at all. I call BS on that. Besides there are color presets and manual adjustment.
