It occurred to me after reading through a lot of threads on various forums on this subject that the capping here in the EU is something many users are aware of, but Apple do not readily acknowledge it. Also, it may be the inability to permanently set (lock) the volume limit - it keeps returning to about the 80% mark. So i ask - is this the capping? Because even when you fool the ipod into playing at full whack (before it returns to 80% sooner or later by itself) I still do not feel that there is enough volume. Of course i am comparing this to Creative products (Zens) which leave the ipod standing on volume output.

I've noticed the volume is a lot lower on my 80GB Classic in comparison to the 5G. It's really annoying! Having the volume up full on the Classic is about the same as 3/4 up on the 5G. I hope Apple fix this (and Coverflow as well).

Hi,

I have just got one of these, used to have a 2nd Gen 8GB Nano (UK model also). The volume (even after removing the volume limit - or rather setting it to be the highest point on the scale) is lower than my old Nano.

Maybe im going crazy but im really struggling here. I go to the same gym as before and I really struggle to hear it now. Many songs I play I am on MAX volume and thats not really enough...

Today I just picked up some new Shure E3G earphones in the hope their low imepedence/sound isolating design would help but no.

Anyone else having this problem?

Neil

I know it's going off topic a bit, but why do gyms have music on so loud? Everyone there is usually wearing headphones, probably all going deaf because they have turned up their iPods trying to drown out whatever dreadful music channel they have playing.
Having had my grumpy old man comment, I think the EU should leave it up to us if we want to damage our hearing.

Has it been proven that EU ipods are capped?

I have had pretty much every non-mini and non-nano iPod that's been released in the UK. My 80GB iPod Video (UK) is really loud - my 160GB iPod Classic (UK) is not loud enough at all. I am satisfied that there is a cap.

Neil.

For what it's worth, I just got my 160gb classic today from the UK online Apple Store and the volume level is fine and certainly the same as all my previous ipods. Sorry for those that are having problems. :(

You don't mention what your previous iPods are and what territory they were purchased in, which is really crucial information for this thread.

EU volume cap

I have an iPod Classic, purchased in Norway. I noticed that the volume level was a lot lower than on my other iPods - also purchased in Norway. I called Apple Support and they could confirm that iPods sold in the EU have a volume cap. Not only that, but they could inform me that the EU now requires an even lower volume max... These new limitations are installed on the new iPod Classics. I don't know if this is true or not, but the volume IS significantly quieter than previous versions of EU iPods

My previous ipods were a 20gb 3G and a 30gb 5G and were both UK models bought from the online Apple store.

Purchased my ipod classic from John Lewis in the UK the volume is ridiculous!

Passing cars drown the sound out even at the highest possible volume level. This isn't how I wish to listen to music. Fingers crossed for a fix. Until then, although it would be harsh to say my ipod is worthless, it certainly isn't a satisfying experience.

Can anyone confirm that (at this time) http://gopod.free-go.net/ does not work on ipod classic?

Yeah I can --- the software can't detect the iPod when connected and mounted.

Does anybody know if goPod is still being developed?

Or does anybody know a programmer who could just use the source-code to update it? It's on the site... Perhaps it's just a minor tweak that's missing to make it work with the classics?

Bensch

I've emailed goPod to ask if it still being developed.

I'll let you know if and when they get back to me.

Does anyone think the latest iPod Classic update (errr, 1.0.2 I think) made any difference to the volume?

cool!
I mailed them too weeks ago though -- no reaction.

i hope you are more successful...

don't think so.

thx,

On the ipod touch forum there is a plist hack posted for a file called RegionalVolumeLimits.plist you change the numbers from 0.8333333 to a 1.

I'm assuming the volume is set to 83% of the normal "worldwide" level. It seemed a decent increase in volume when done anyway.

Too late for me to check this program from version tracker - I gave up on my Ipod and returned it to Applestore in Norway for a refund. I came to the conclusion that the capping wasnt just a lowering of the volume bar to about 80% - even when the ipod was 'fooled' into playing at 100% it was too low.
Which made me worry that this may have been a fixed limitation on the headphone output (the docking output would, of course, not be restricted). But if someone tries this little program, please let us know if it works....

Volume cap on 160g ipod classic

Hi, I too am having a real problem with a newly purchased 160GB ipod classic. :( The volume is so weak even when turned up full that it is useless for anything other than sitting in a quiet room with the windows shut. It's now gathering dust as I've revereted to my old 4th gen 20gb ipod. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone to Apple holding and complaining - I demanded a refund but they wouldn't budge, even theough they admitted ipods sold in the EU have a volume cap which makes them much more quiet than in the US. I have searched high and low on the web and found a program called "goPod" which removes the volume cap on old ipods but not the classic. I have also found programs which claim to remove the volume cap on all ipods, but it's only for Mac users. If anyone out there knows of a way to remove this darn cap, without having to twiddle with the volume in i-tunes, please please share it. I am so angry with Apple - they're selling audio devices which totally fail their fundamental aim!

goPod certainly seems not to work on classic

Hi gavstephenson - I have tried goPod on my 160gb classic but to no avail. I'm PC not Mac (not sure what you're on) and it certainly doesn't seem to work on my PC. I'm tearing my hair out trying to remove this volume limitor as my new classic is just lying around gathering dust. Judging by Apple's response I shan't buy from them again. I spent 2.5 hours on the phone complaining the other night. They wouldn't refund but I eventually got £50 cash from them for the inconvenience. I recommend everyone call Apple and complain about the same thing.

Agree with your sentiments - my 80GB classic is nigh on useless on the tube and walking near heavy traffic. I'm very annoyed and also desperate to find something to remove the volume cap.

What is the program you refer to above?

I hope that it actually does remove the volume cap and not just 'boost' the volume of the songs - that doesn't increase the max volume, it only means the existing max volume is reached sooner when scrolling along the volume bar (useless!). I think that's what iPodVolumeBooster - 1.4 (mentioned above) does.

I am told Mac users can find a software patch here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23890

I haven't had confirmation that it works but it's worth a try. Let me know if it does as I will find a friend with a Mac if so.

I tried this and it all seemed to work but when i tried re-listening couldn't tell any difference.

Would appreciate comments from anyone else ??

The solution, which was a right bitch to find on Google (I had to check an old email to get it), is a program called GoPod.

It is not the solution for the ipod classic, as discussed.

iPodVolumeBooster - 1.4 is the patch found at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23890

It appears to rise the volume by 7 decibels. It doesn't make much difference but it is better than nothing. Yeah, it works.

I'm on a mac by the way.

I hope it is nothing a patch can't fix. I mean, if iPodVolumeBooster - 1.4 can boost by 7 decibels, I wonder why it can't boost by more. Maybe it will do in the future.

Can this be done on the ipod classic? And if it can be done, does anyone know how. It looks like it would be a bigger volume boost when compared to iPodVolumeBooster - 1.4
