Unfortunately I think this picture sums it up. Not a single product "worth" buying now except the new Retina MBP and the MBA. I can hold my breath a little while longer for a desktop- at this point I can go with a mini or an iMac I just hope it's soon.

As an interesting (?) side note: The German online refurb store is currently packed with many models available in all product lines, where normally the selection is rather limited - especially late at night (currently after 11 p.m. here). Even one mini model (Server) is still available - normally those are gone by noon...

UK refurb store just had a number of 2011 i7s appear today, selection is usually very limited.

The older Mini is still "New"

Looking at apple.com.au, they are still advertising the mid 2011 model as "new"... Surly this needs to be updated and is almost false advertising.

If I were to go online and purchase one now, and in 6 weeks Apple release a new one I am sure I would have a strong case with the below screen shot.

What are your thoughts? Will they leave this up until the next Mini is released?

I hope its not a sign.

It wouldn't be very unreasonable for them to do so. It's still completely accurate. This is the newest model. It'll be new until something comes along to make it old.

interesting argument. That being said Apple's 'technology guarantee' is black and white.

I see your point, and its very valid... IMO it is the newest like you say, but i don't call it new. If you get my drift.

I've noticed Apple do this before. I don't have a clue what the legal situation is, but in my opinion it's naughty.

Picking a random example (chosen purely because I know my facts on it):
The Lexus RX450h (successor to the RX400h) was released in mid 2009. I would say it was the "new RX450h" until mid 2010. Then from mid 2010 to June 2012 it was "the RX450h" (i.e. it is no longer "new", it's just "the" as it's mid lifecycle). Then in June 2012 the 2013 model year was announced which gave the RX450h some updates but importantly keeps the same name. In my opinion this MY13 is now the "new RX450h" from when it ships in October 2012 for about a year until late 2013 when it will again just be "the RX450h" as it'll no longer be "new".

There was a deal on Staples Canada website this weekend where the Base Mini was $100 off. (i.e. $499)

I decided to pick it up instead of waiting for the new Mini and bought an Intel SSD 330 180 GB and 4 GB of RAM to add to it.

I think the machine will do just fine for the next few years.

I'm replacing and early 2009 Mac Mini which should fetch me about $250 on eBay at current going rates.

Overall upgrade price factoring in the sale of old mini should be about $400 including RAM and SSD.

Not bad if I may say so myself.

And don't forget, Mini's never drop more than 100$ in the first year after a new model is presented. So if you buy one now on sale (here in the EU many do 100-150€ less at MediaMarkt/Saturn every 2-3 weeks), you simply can't fail buying one. Even if you do on sept 11th. It will give you a free computer for at least a year. And the current one does Snow Leopard. That increases resale value as well. It keeps the much slower 2010 version still at a reasonable resale value, and if you install Snow on a 2011, people will love to buy that one from you next year.

I know this is a very unlikely, but I wouldn't be surprised if Apple dropped the mac mini but came out with a new cheaper mac pro.

I may buy a 2011 Mini with the upgraded i7 2.7 and AMD 6630M model for $600 on CL. It just expired warranty though. Think still worth it to buy even if the new ones refresh soon? The main thing I'd probably be missing out on is USB3.

Not only this, but ya know what else falls under the category of false advertising? The Mini is being advertised as having the "latest" i5 and i7 processors. The Mini doesn't have Ivy Bridge yet. So yes, that's false advertising, but it doesn't surprise me from apple.

last I looked I can't import itunes in apple lossless .

Now I have not bothered to even look at an itunes song since 2008 but last time I looked the best I can import in is 256 bits. my music is all on lossless around 800-1100 bits.
(...)

Can I ask which program you recommend/use for importing your songs?

You can import cd's into iTunes using applelossless. I do it all the time. Check iTunes preferences again... general --> import settings --> import using --> applelossless.

yes that is what I do with the cd's I have access to.

I was trying to make the point that the itunes store did not allow cd downloads.(circa 2008)
I also mentioned that I don't purchase from the apple itunes store as I have access to many cd's.

As I under stand what you are saying if I go to the online store I can now import in full quality. That is good to know.

I stopped looking at online itunes due to my access to 100,000 plus cd's Of which I have copied 2500 to my hdd in apple lossless.

I think we've seen the last Mini, updated specs would eat into laptop sales with higher margins.

Apple is dumb if they don't integrate Mini with ATV and sell as a HTPC with their upcoming TV. Then make a Mac-Pro-lite with MBP-15" specs.

Apple Desktop product manager should be fired yesterday!

I use itunes but all my music comes from cd's. I have access to a lot of cd's.

I was confused, because my iTunes showed max. import quality with 320 kBit/s..and no lossless. But my bad, didn't realize it was the old (Pc) desktop with older iTunes version. On the MBA it shows lossless...but thank's anyway.

Why does the mini HAVE to die in order to bring about a new Mac Pro?

Best selling computer on Amazon: the Mac mini (408 days!). Yeah, dropping it would be what's known as a BAD business decision.

Plenty of other sources on the interwebs RE the overwhelming popularity of the little computer that could :)

Maybe keep the very popular mini line alive and well AND redesign a more affordable pro desktop...hmm?....you think? :D
