Many USA libraries have huge cd stacks. If copying thousands of cd's for free across the country is not happening as we speak I would be surprised.
[...]
with 100,000 plus cd quality songs on the nas. the nas can fit 2x 3tb hdds in raid0 which is about 5000 to 7000 cd's of lossless quality.
Frankly - one must be a true collector or dedicated hobbyist to invest all the time for evaluating, importing, categorizing and archiving so many CD's. Sure - importing and categorizing can be taken care of by iTunes, but one may end up with a cluttered category structure and lots of songs that won't be more than nominal database entries. And even then it still takes time to swap all that CD's...

I do own some 200-300 CD's myself, but i found i'm not really purchasing music anymore (except for that occasional track or album from iTunes, when i'm _really_ interested).

Radio (be it FM or IP-based) does satisfy about 80% of my music needs and the rest is taken care of by my existing library. Admitted - i also don't sit down anymore to really _listen_ to and enjoy good music via my HiFi system as i used to do in former times. It has become a commodity mainly playing in the background. So maybe i'm no measure here, but it still makes me wonder...

If it is old enough to still have a tape slot, you can get a cheap adapter in cassette form which connects to the stereo jack on the MP3 player of your choice.

No it's not THAT old, did find in the attic an old 8-track though, but they dont have converters for that either :p

this week I am making a 150 mile round trip to a NYC DIY speaker building contest

I will be working the sound level meter. But I am not into sound like I was in past.

I like the approach to go for accuracy over absolute sound level. Sounds like lots of fun - and quite a challenge to stay within the budget limit. Enjoy that trip to the fullest! Oh and to stay at least remotely on topic: Will you take one of your minis with you, e.g. to do some of the metering / measuring work?

No I am going to set sound levels with white noise and the meter. About 80db at 1500 hertz . The guy running the event has a mike and a pc for other measurements.

Unfortunately most speaker software is pc only which means either have a pc or run bootcamp/vmWare/parallels. I do a lot with vmWare but most builders just stick with a pc only.

I have brought in a lot of macbook pros to his shop. I sometimes help Dj's setup macbook pros for Dj work and the owner built a few really nice speakers for some of them.. both macbook pros and the 2011 server mac mini are pretty good for this.

Picked up a 2.5 Mini last week and 8GB of RAM.
If a new Mini is announced Wed I will swap for it along with a new iPhone, if not I will be happy and move on not looking back.
This is my first Mac so the newness and learning are enough to keep me satisfied for a long time to come.

Now to actually do something with all the pictures I have taken with my Canon DSLR........

Damn it apple, if a new mini isn't out before the end of october, I'm waiting for Haswell. Getting tired of my mid-2010 core 2 duo 13" Macbook Pro, plus I really want to get a second monitor which I can't have until I get a mini with dual display outputs.

+1 too late to bye ivy anymore.

Wait, are you saying you want a Mini with dual display outputs or want the Mini because it has dual display outputs? (technically it does)

Seriously here a lot are complaining about Apple desktop delay,
why don't we create a petition ?
Lets send a mass message to Cook in order to reach him and wake from that money pillow.
Maybe he has just lost the route to Imac factories due to the new Map App.

I did one, iMacs only (see my sig):

I did FB page for Mini's too but it didn't seem to catch on as much as the iMacs did: http://www.facebook.com/pages/We-Want-2012-Mac-mini/176874512446777

Indeed. My 2011 MM has 2 monitors on it already :)
Problem is that not all monitors get recognized :-/ My mini refuses to run on DVI on both the Thunderbolt and the HDMI adapter with my second monitor, which ran perfectly fine on the MP. Pretty annoying...

To be honest that really doesn't make any sense! Are you using the Apple mDP->DVI adaptor or a 3rd party one? Kinda sucks though.

Tried the official Apple mDP->DVI and HDMI->DVI adaptors in two-monitor mode. Also tried mDP->DVI and direct HDMI connection (my main monitor supports this natively), but to no avail. Even with the problematic monitor being the only one connected i had no luck. And of course i verified both ports and adaptors working with my main monitor.

Alas - the trusty old 19" has lived its life, it seems...

I'm biting the bullet and buying a Mac Mini tomorrow. As much as it pains me to do knowing it's running on Sandybridge, I've reached the point in my degree that I actually need a proper workstation at home rather than a tablet. Part of me is obscenely tempted to periodically take it back and rebuy it when it approaches the end of the returns window until they're finally refreshed.

So, a couple of questions guys.
-Exactly how substantial is then performance jump from Sandybridge to Ivybridge in desktops and (to a lesser extent) Intel HD3000 to 4000? Am I missing anything life changing?
-Has anyone heard anything tangible in the last couple of weeks (post iPhone 5 launch) regarding Mac updates in the near future?

it's been said before, but the performance jumps aren't what's holding me back. Its interface to expansion.

USB3 is becoming more and more critical every day, and the TB docking stations are ridiculously expensive. Without USB3, I can't push the "BUY" button... and I'm the same boat as you... I sold my MBP on Jun30 and have used only my server, and a tablet since... waiting...

Another option is to buy a base model 13" MacBook Pro that has Ivy Bridge, USB 3.0 and the Intel HD4000. I use an early 2011 13" MBP with an external display and it works great. You get a desktop and portable Mac in a single package.

Fry's currently has the latest model 13" MBP for $999 vs. $1199.

As far as periodically returning the Mac Mini? It's dishonest and a great way to rack-up some Bad Kharma...

Yeah I sold my Pro to make money to move to a desktop solution. I/O isn't a massive issue for me though, I'm more after maximising the life of the machine in terms of actual performance.

I'm on a student budget unfortunately and I'm in the UK =P the Mini really is the furthest I can reach on my budget. I just wanted to know how significant the jump to Ivybridge would be.

The returning remark was made in jest, by the way. Even if I wanted to Apple's T&Cs limit you to one desktop purchase with student discount per year =P

Mini shipment dates

Maybe this is just in my neck of the woods, but I'm noticing Oct 15-17th delivery dates on Mac Mini orders placed at the Apple Store, the stock mid-range model and all non-stock orders, seems like quite a wait....
