Does it even matter? Instead of asking how new products will be released, the better question is asking when they will be released. The events are just pomp and circumstance and in some cases it’s easier to filter through the noise by getting a press release rather than sitting through a press conference (especially when the updates are just spec bumps).

Is an Apple Event Still Likely This October Following Today's Surprise iPad Mini 7 Announcement?

My guess is yes. They will have an event that will hit hard on Apple Intelligence, announce the release of 18.1, and introduce new M4 MacBook Pro models. They announced the mini early to keep the media event shorter and more focused.

I think it depends on the latest iPad Pro M4's revenues, for the first time Apple introduced the latest M-chip with iPad Pro before introducing the MacBook-lines and today they released the MINI which means yes, they don't have enough time during the event to introduce iPad mini and there is a chance for the homepod mini 2g!

Ming-Chi Kuo "mass shipments of a second-generation HomePod mini would begin in the second half of 2024."

I'm guessing a new press releases each week over the next two weeks.

Then they can proudly claim at the Oct 31 shareholder meeting that they have a strong lineup set for the holiday season.
After all, isn't all about appeasing shareholders?

With the release of the iPad Mini I think it’s less likely they have an event. With MacBooks, what more can they introduce aside from a new processor? They already introduced M4 at an earlier event. It will essentially be the same design, so what else can they offer? Same for iMac. The only thing truly “new” would be a Mac Mini with a smaller footprint, but I’m not sure an entire “event” video is needed for that.

IIRC Apple's quarterly earnings call is on the 31st, so that will also factor in. But I agree that there won't be an event, prob just press releases.

A lone iPad, especially an iPad mini, would've been weird to tack onto an otherwise all-Mac event.

What's stranger is that the base model iPad hasn't been given an update this year. I know that this is in line with more recent rumors, but the price cut being the only update in two (going on three) years is odd. The iPad mini having gotten the A17 Pro and not the A18 Pro is weird. Then when they inevitably(?) update the standard iPad, giving it the A18 will be...weird.

If there's a complete design change for the Mini then I'm pretty sure Apple will release a video. For stuff that's just a spec bump a press release seems likely. So it depends on what they release, when.

Low cost iPad tends to get n-2 gen processor, so that would mean A16 or A17 Pro.

I suspect Apple wants to focus on Macs only for their event. This is just Apple’s usual clearing out of their lesser updates before the event. I would expect another press release in a day or so for a new base iPad that will also include the A17 Pro.

With the event, they’ll go into detail into the M4 Pro and M4 Max along with the Mac mini redesign. Releasing an iMac, a mini, and MacBook Pros is quite a lot for a single event already, so it’s not surprising for them to clear the decks for Macs only.

I don’t know much, but in its current rumour form, I wouldn’t call the new Mac mini an upgrade. It’s a desktop. There is no reason to remove ports and make it smaller. Again, it’s a desktop. Unless, they are specifically trying to make it a NUC form factor.

If the other products are going to also be spec bumps, why is a whole event needed for that? Are they going to go on and on about Apple Intelligence again? They already did so at WWDC and the iPhone event. The Mac Mini is supposedly getting a redesign, but that isn't enough reason for an event.

I guess it's possible that they will have a Mac-only event to show off M4 Pro and Max, but it will be one short event.

I was thinking this exact same thing when I saw the iPad mini press release. The only reasons I'm still thinking there could be an event:

- The new Mac mini redesign is a pretty big deal especially after all this time.
- Even though the M4 has already been revealed, this would be Apple's chance to show what that chip can do in desktop form.
- M4 Pro & M4 max
- Apple Intelligence: They had a decent showing at WWDC but the follow up showing at the iPhone event was less impressive. This could be a chance for them to properly hype it up once more while simultaneously releasing the first feature set to the public.
- VisionOS 2 ultra wide Mac Virtual display

A press release would do just fine for all of these but they do have just enough to make a good short 30 minute presentation. Also a good chance to hype up their "first Mac computers designed from the ground up for AI".

9to5Mac made a nonsensical post about how this means the event isn't happening. They dropped a spec bumped iPad Mini in a press release. Makes a lot more sense to me than talking about it during a Mac focused M4 event.

So yes, the event is still happening.

I agree and will be curious about any counter arguments. I suspect the only reason for making it smaller is some sort of cool factor showing that they CAN make it smaller so did. But I agree it would be placed someone below a monitor with a few thins plugged into it (including maybe a hub) and the largely ignored.
