I got a 13" MBP with 16gb of RAM. I do a lot of iOS development on it. It has had problems. While it was first setting up, the speakers would crackle and pop to the point where I had to shut off the music I was listening to. Podcasts and Safari have crashed on me a couple of times and yesterday I got a kernel panic causing it to reboot. The audio issue has improved greatly. It will still pop and crackle ever so often. Usually shutting off the iOS simulator fixes this. Apple is sending me a new unit. Something doesn't feel quite right and I know that if I don't get this sorted before my 14 days period, I will be forever going to the Apple store trying to prove my case..

My last machine was a Hackintosh who's motherboard after 5 years gave up the ghost. The machine before that was a 15" 2015 MBP which was a horrible laptop as the CPU got so hot that it cooked the logic board three times! Apple just kept replacing the logic board.. Oh and my previous employer lent me a 15" 2018 MBP with that nasty keyboard on it and while it was better then my 2015 MBP, it still ran very hot when doing certain heavy tasks..

I often use an app called Zwift which is an indoor cycling virtual world "game". On the 15" 2018 MBP, the fans would scream bloody murder and it was super hot after a 1hr ride. The M1 just gets a little warm, no fans. And Zwift hasn't released a universal binary for it yet.. So Zwift is running through Rosetta. Very impressive.

This current machine is crazy fast. The battery life on it is incredible and the instant on is very impressive. Hopefully this new unit fixes the issues I was having with the current unit..

I got my 16GB, 512GB MBA last week. It replaces a 2015MBP, which was fully loaded, but which I never liked. The keyboard was unreliable and frankly the performance, not up to scratch. I'd got to the point where using my laptop was no longer fun.

This new machine is already renewing my enthusiasm. It is incredibly fast, doesn't baulk, whatever I ask it to do, and comes with the best Mac keyboard I've used in years. I love the display, battery life is exactly as advertised. And it's all in that amazing MBA form factor which is so much more comfortable to use than the lumpy MBP.

It seems not many people like me.
I have M1 Air, my first Mac, base model with Dropbox, Office 365, Teams, Firefox, Brave, Parallels are non-Appstore apps, otherwise from the Appstore. My experience is between great and bad. For the bad side, I got a suggestion from Safari to close a Facebook tab which playing a video, Dictation/Globe button sometimes not work until Log out and Sign in again, applications don't open immediately like they do in my iPad mini... Except them, it's great machine.

2015 mbp? You had an unreliable keyboard? I wasn’t aware of keyboard problems till 2016 on the mbp, except for the 2015 MacBook.

Just got mine yesterday, and is really fast compared to my 2013 MacBook Air. I like that a lot of my iPad and iPhone apps can be downloaded on the the new one and work. Had to download Roseta on the new M1 and it only took half a minute if that. Touch ID is also nice and convenient. Have to keep the old device because of legacy software compatibility issues.
It’s really fast compared to everything except the highest end machines. We have the 2013 air and pretty much everything makes the fans spin.

Right. But we're talking about system requirements over the next ten years. As far as I'm aware, every single release of macOS over the past decade has required more system resources than the previous release. I expect that trend to continue.

At some point, we may get functionality like x86 Windows emulation or translation that works quite well and that may be something that consumes a lot of RAM on M1 Macs.
While the 8GB version is the first base model to actually perform well, a basic rule for Apple products is to double everything from the base model.

I had MB Pro 2014 13" (base config) as my Apple first machine and then MB Pro 15" 2014 (with GeForce) for few years.
I had problem with hight temperatures of both machines. I mean very hot laptop body, that wasn't comfy. Also 15" MB never was as much powerful for its price like should be. Battery life never was strong part of this laptop. So I sell it and work with hackintosh (HP Elite Book) for few months.

I have MB Air M1 and it's the best UX that I ever had with Apple product. From unboxing (more that month ago) to this days I'm very happy with it.
I like small light body, great retina display, touchID, fanless design. Finally, I can use my laptop many hours placed it on my legs without any heating. It's like a dream. Battery life is simply outstanding. And at last, SPEED.
Oh and this machine is for half price of my last MB Pro 15" 2014!!
There is only one minus - no native support for 2 external display. But there is workaround with DisplayLink, that I didn't tested yet.
The workaround with DisplayLink worked fine, the only issue was that if you have 4k LG monitors (at least my model), you don't get the 1440p resolution. If I use the USB-C/Thunderbolt to DisplayPort on my monitor, it works great and 1440p is there natively. Just FYI. I didn't care because I only have one monitor.

I am quite jealous but since I have been running my MacBook Pro since 2012, I feel like the reasonable thing to do is just wait for 2nd gen or M1X whatever with a potentially new redesigned housing. Been waiting for so long but ah, so tempting ;)
I wish you luck! I so failed. ?????

These United States
I think when you need a system, get one. It will become obsolete, begin to slow down - as you might want bigger and bigger apps, but yes there's bump in performance vs Intel now. But as ever more features etc get heaped on it too will begin to wear, until the next new "shiny", and their apps, and so son.

Love the one you're with ;-).

Want to see what Apple does with the new 16in, if they have a AMD GPU mobile Radeon card inside it would be good for gaming. The only thing I have seen running on the M1 a year ago was Tomb Raider running at 1080P low Resolution. I also want to see if Apple does a Mac Mini Pro tower.
Doubtful that Apple is going to use anymore dGPU's. They are too prone to failure and cause a lot of heat and battery drain. Plus I want Apple to focus on important stuff for the MacBook and not focus on this silly gaming nonsense. If people want to game get a PS4/5, an Xbox or a Windows machine for that. Gamers that buy a Mac to run Windows for games are a very small market and I don't want Apple wasting resources on that.

Granted it is fast, but it doesn't matter if it can't run the numerical codes that I need natively. The lack of 32GB right now, native gnu compiler that includes FORTRAN (yes there are development versions that give me hope) is a big no for me right now. That is why I just ordered the i7 13" with 32GB ram to replace my late-2016 13". Until Apple Silicone can run FORTRAN codes and compile numerical libraries (e.g. Deal.ii), I will be happy with this upgrade for the next couple of years. Until then the M1 books are nothing more than a iPad Pro with Rosetta 2. It does makes me wonder if Rosetta 2 will be made available for iPad Pros.

512 gb 8gb Space Gray Pro owner here. Everything is so seamless. It's unreal. Granted, I do not run windows or any complicated programs. I am blown away. How can this be a first gen machine? I am now trying to figure out what to do about my other MacBooks because all I want to do is use this one. I am in love. Logic tells me I should return it and get the second gen version of it and I will eventually run into some major problems, but I don't want to take it back lol.
Considering that I ended up getting a base Air for 600 bucks with student discount and trade in, yeah, I’m pretty darn happy with it haha. I used the 16 inch pro and every other 2020 release but this one wins for sure. I would say the biggest win is that they MOSTLY took the stress of configuring out of the equation. Any spec is going to likely surprise you. I know there’s many downsides to it, but it’s also kind of cool that iPhone’s internals aren’t really a factor and are essentially not disclosed. Yeah, we find out a lot of the specs on the back end, and it would be a much bigger problem if the performance just wasn’t there, but luckily that’s not the problem. Maybe macs will get to that point. You get one, you’re able to simply expect that it will just work, no matter the spec. I know it keeps us locked in the walled garden and does allow for as much customization as other brands, but....it’s apple?

Super impressed with mine.
I upgraded from a 2012 MacBook Pro (which I was NEVER happy with, not even from day one).
This new machine does everything I need with ease.
Apple are finally onto something revolutionary. Miles ahead of anything else they have offered in the recent past.
Congrats on your upgrade, but moving from 2012 to 2020, anything out there will be blazing fast in comparison, just some perspective.

Its reddit. Other users confirmed it on their macs as well.
That is just weird at that should not be happing unless reddit is doing something totally off the wall gonzo. Is it with all browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc) or just certain ones? I have a problem with Google's Public Data explorer on Safari (blank page) but it works fine through Chrome and Firefox.

I'm very curious which concepts we will see here.
From my point of view, at least for some pro use cases like graphics rendering, video production etc. we will most likely still see dedicated GPUs. At least in the Mac Pro product line. Very curious how they will deal with that topic in their MacBook / consumer iMac lines. My bet would be on seeing very efficient Apple dedicated GPUs in the high end versions (still similar to the Intel product lines before Apple Silicon), but maybe they prove me wrong and come up with something more efficient...

Well - as Apple has already declared AR and VR as primary drivers of their future strategy and gaming as a central focus within their services concept, rest assured that they definitely are not in line with you here.
Apple computers not being suited for gaming seems to be a relic of past centuries. If you want to have a platform which focuses on purposes outside gaming only, it doesn't look like you have many choices left. At least Windows, Linux and macOS are off the table then... ;)

I "downgraded" from a 2019 MacBook Pro to the new M1 MacBook Air (the most basic configuration) and I haven't looked back. This $1000 laptop blows away the 2019 in performance, battery life, and snappiness... not to mention that this keyboard is just plain better.

I was going to sell my 2019 MBP to a friend, but I talked them out of buying it from me, and just to get an Air instead.

BTW, anyone want to buy a 2019 MBP?? LOL.

What kind of question is this OP? Where did you live in the last months?
Everybody call these macs with M1 revolutionary, not just us on this forum

I have been impressed with the speed, whether running native-compiled apps or intel with Rosetta2. Battery life is amazing. I spent two hours last week editing down a video in Final Cut. I started with 50% battery, and after intensive video work, two hours later I was at 40%. The fan never ran at high speed on my MBP. I've frequently gone 8 or 9 hours doing more routine work with battery levels dropping from full to in the 80% range.

I just moved from a fully loaded 15" 2018 MBP (32GB RAM, 2TB flash) to the 13" M1 MBP (16GB RAM, 2TB Flash). The M1 is far more responsive. I'll also note that in the course of this change, I got a keyboard that really works. I can type at about 2 times the rate on the new machine.

Been nearly 2 months (??) now on the m1. I have not powered on the 16" MacBook Pro I have all that time. Additionally, I purchased Shadow PC Infinite for a year, $480, while expensive for a cloud machine, I been able to game without much fuss. Any decent stable internet connection and I have great gaming experience, I tried it at a few places, and frankly at home its fine, on the one wifi hotel I been at, it was super.

The Caldigit docking station works great too. Though I would love to get one with built in SSD drives.
