Gave my 2.5 year old 1st gen Airpods to my teenage son after upgrading to AirPods Pro. 1st gen buds themselves still getting 3-4 hours of battery life outside of the case, and they’d been heavily used for music & podcasts whilst I had them. He’d been using his (almost destroyed) Beats X and pack in EarPods, so AirPods were a decent upgrade for him. Seems to have spent more time taking selfies with them in to brag to friends than he has listening to them though...

I also got AirPods Pro to replace my 1st gen AirPods. Surprisingly, I found them less comfortable and they fell from my ears more often (and I've tried all the included tips and even some aftermarket foam tips).

Just bought the 2nd gen yesterday for $129.99 and gave the Pro to my brother.

I’ve read a number of cases of ill fitting AirPods for certain individuals for both the original and Pro models. The Verge’s reviewer of the Pros specifically mentions the issues he had with the originals. My AirPods Pro in part replaced my cherished but failing (due to heavy use) Bose QC30’s - the ‘wings’ on the tips, designed to tuck inside the outer ear and hold them in place would ensure a fit for just about anyone. Would have been good if Apple could’ve licensed or developed a suitable equivalent, especially as the Beats X had a similar-ish idea.

I'm still using 1st gen units. The pods were replaced this summer after 30 minutes on the phone to Apple. My market has 2 years of guarantee and after 17 months, I was getting about 50 minutes usage before they needing charging. That would be because I hammer Skype on my iPad with the AirPods, I would assume.

I am now using a wired headset with the iPad so that I don't totally kill the replacements. The question is would I buy again or buy Pros. I am not so sure, there are many competitors on the market.

I just ordered a $30 Aukey-branded pair from Amazon. Will see how it compares.

Maybe under Bluetooth devices - there may be a “Gen 2” reference for the newer ones.

Or if you try to say “Hey Siri” it won’t work with the originals. There will also be a Hey Siri option in the settings of the gen 2 AirPods.

Same with me. It opened up the music world for me after many years of not listening.

IOS14 should bring that feature, but I’m not sure if the original AirPods are supported.
Thank you! :D I have the gen 1 AirPods. :)

I bought my AirPods in April of 2017.

Some days they die after 10 minutes, some days they seem fine for up to an hour.

They're used for calling just as much as music.

I do want to replace them but feel the battery service fee should be much, much lower. For the cost of servicing, I can almost buy a brand new set.

I'm not convinced 3.5 years is a good life, but I know the batteries in these things are tiny. I don't think I should just replace and reward Apple. I'm no environmentalist but this seems a huge waste. I do love them but just not convinced on what I should do next. I'm tempted to go back to EarPods and see how I get on with them.

I love Apple tech but I don't think they're as green as they would lead us to believe. Also, I'm questioning the value for money on offer lately. I have an iPhone X (bought outright a year after release), a Cellular Watch 5 and Gen. 1 AirPods. I'm slowly being priced out of the Apple ecosystem.

I’m in the same place you are. I thought I’d be smart and only use the right AirPod forever and then switch to the left one to double their life.

I did that and the left one (hardly used through the life of the device) just cuts out without warning (Suspiciously at around the same amount of time the right one lasts). Sucks so much because it’s a legit problem but Apple won’t fix it.

I dont think I’d buy these again. Too expensive for too short a lifespan. I’ve had the iPhone X since day 1 (bought outright). Have a series 0 Apple Watch stainless steel and a series 3 aluminum.

anyone know if these get an update w ios14? If so, what is in the update? Would love to see my left AirPod restored...

I just replaced my Gen 1 AirPods with Pros yesterday. Loving the Pros already. The Gen 1 barely last that long any more before needing another charge.

Reporting back in - still using my Gen 1's from late 2016.

I'm hopeful another update is coming for the Gen 1/2 style (semi-open) as it fits my usages much much better than the Pros' (which I tried and returned). I'm specifically interested in the naturally semi-open design for my around the house usages.

Had them since launch and replaced them the other day. Left one could only hold a charge for 15 minutes while the right one was still fine...

i agree 100%.
Untried the pros and got the 2nd generation ones instead. Pros are amazing but I have never been able to get used to in ears.

i like not being completely shut of from the environment, especially when on a call.

I do wonder about a pair of Pro's for watching movies and on trains/planes...

But it seems like an expensive kit to have for such limited usages (for me).

I've lost several wired earbuds on planes (toss and turn while sleeping on 12+ hour flights). I don't think I'd risk AirPods in that situation.

I'm not too worried about that - I wouldn't really be using them while sleeping honestly (I'm not really an international traveler, etc)

Fair enough points guys, & i’m not trying to say you’re wrong or anything. Just to address the above points:

Noise Cancellation is great for chores like vacuuming & lawn mowing. You can listen to your music/podcasts & basically drown out your noise.

On calls, Noise Cancellation isn’t only beneficial for you when in noisy environments, but also for the person on the other end.

It’s a shame they don’t fit or suit your ears because their best feature really elevates them in many practical ways.

Mums still using my first gens, though they're were replaced after a year and a half for short battery life so they're not quite launch day.. still hold about 3 hours charge I think.

My Gen 1’s I’ve had since launch were acting up all kinds of crazy and people were having all kinds of issues hearing me so I took advantage of the Staples sale on them and got a pair of no frill Gen 2’s lol

I got my 1st Gens on May 2017 and have been using them just before recently. They lasted about two hours on music and I couldn't use them for calls because something seemingly had happened to the mic. People just wouldn't be able to hear me well enough on their end. I upgraded to 2nd Gen and it seemed like a nice upgrade, longer playing time and being heard fine while talking on the phone. With the 3a283 firmware AP2 sound noticeably better compared to 2d15. Pros though sound kinda flat to me and while ANC is nice and I like the fit something is off with the sound compared to 2's. Maybe the reason is that I haven't updated my SE OG past iOS 12.4.1

Still have my Gen 1 Airpods. still have a few hours of usage between charges and works for what i do (running/calls/music). Recently I've been contemplating upgrade to the Gen 2 or to the APP, however, not sure which one to get.

I still have mine although I rotate between latest Airpods and Samsung buds live

I've retired the first gen over a year ago and went with the AirPods Pro. I've had the Gen 1 since launch, but after listening with them everyday, the battery is completely dead and won't last half an hour anymore.

Got mine on release week and I fell in love with them. Probably one of the best Apple products ever.
This week, they were put to rest. Left earbud couldn’t hold charge anymore (disconnecting after just 18-20 minutes of use). They’re back in their retail box and safe in my Apple cemetery.
They’ve been replaced by AirPod Pro and I’m also very happy with them. Hope they last as long as the Gen1.

My Gen 2 AirPods arrived yesterday. Although I can still get about 30 minutes of phone time in with them it isn't enough working from home. I get a little over an hour watching the ATV with them but after 3.5 years I'm happy to upgrade. I avoided the pros based on too many negative comments about them on these forums.
