There is no technically when theft is involved. Theft is theft. If you don't understand this, then you have some serious ethic foundation issues.

Meh, people can have different ethical foundations. Personally, if apple mistakenly sends me an extra charger, I'm not sending it back unless they send me a return label and arrange a pickup.

I know when I sent my MBA for repair a while ago, I was instructed to give only the machine. Now it didn't come back with any extras... But if it did, I dont think I'd be obligated to return them.

The OP apparently is only asking if anyone has kept a charger and then been charged
Not asking if he should keep it or not

I can't answer the first question, because I have never been in that situation
I could answer the second question, but it wasn't asked by the OP

A mistake is something different than knowingly stealing.

I recently had to get a replacement and they told me to package everything and they did mention to also make sure all accessories is packaged. Call for a return label so it would be free. Personally I would package and send the charger back because they can debit your account for the charger. Send it back, less worry and be done. :)

Just emailed my 'sales rep' to ask the exact same question as I've got to arrange a return now.

We'll see what they say...

I just received my replacement retina macbook pro, which came as a brand new computer in original box with all accessories. So if I don't send one of the two chargers back is it free or will they charge me for it or something?

What did the representatives from Apple say when you phoned to ask them this question? Surely you've already asked, right...'cos that would be the logical thing to do.

I wonder how many people who are crying foul have utorrent on their machine?

hehe

But alas, I also think if you had to ask if it's free, it isn't. And alas, if you keep it, it's stealing. And alas, you are going to heck.

Don't let these people on their faux moral high horses get you down before they go back to pirating, porn, and the like.

Next time drama queens please include the caveat
"I think it's taking advantage of the system a little, but I've done a lot worse in the past."

Why is it assumed that if someone thinks something is wrong and says so, that they're immediately called a hypocrite? If I say I think it should be sent back, I'm not saying that the person will go to hell or should be arrested if they don't send it back. I'm also not saying that everything I've done in my life has been perfect and that I've never done anything wrong. I am saying that if it were me, I would send it back because I think it's the right thing to do in this situation.

And by the way, you're calling others drama queens, huh? Have you read your own post? ;)

Pirating, porn and the like? What does that mean?

Interesting. So the use of the comma between pirating and porn suggests that according to you watching (legally bought or downloaded) pornography is the same as stealing copyrighted material (pirating).

Some interesting set of morals you have that I simply cannot understand. Please get off your horse immediately and remove that plank of wood from your eye.

I'd be a little more careful with similes and word choice.

Being given an extra charger per company policy
Versus pilfering candy from a store with premeditation and subterfuge are two different things.

It's just a cost of business.
And I did read my post. No drama in it like everyone questioning the op morals and character over a $50 item given to him (not stolen by him).

Btw a free charger would boost anyone's morale

He doesn't want to ring because no doubt when you pose the question directly to someone "Should I give you all your belongings back or can I keep them?", it's safe to say you're wasting your time. He was trying to find out if anyone on MR has been crafty enough to do it and get away with it I guess.

I would return it, but not because I'm the perfect do-gooder citizen who never takes advantage of a situation (none of us here are, even if we love to pretend such), but because I would expect them to be expecting it, and there's no point complicating the process.

He's not so bad If this guy keeps a company freebie
While others who secretly do much worse bash his morality

I liked the "omg chill out" post.

I'm a big fan of apple but the way some people hold it up on a pedestal and drag a guy with a second chapter through the mud is hard to understand.

Quite the vitriol for a fifty dollar accessory shipped to his door

To your question
I have seen friends send back iPhones and received a replacement phone alone or a
Phone and charger+earbuds who were told to drop them off if they picked up the new
Phone at apple or just keep them if delivered home.

So some of them got double chargers and headphones without being charged money for them.

Hope that relieves your fears of being charged for it.
The right thing to do is drop off the old one if your ever at the store, but if it is to inconvenient keep it without feeling too guilty.

Don't worry bro
Keep it, enjoy it.
Apple is sending free SuperDrives to some delayed shipping mbpr
If you accidentally forgot to send back the charger with a defective computer and got an extra one back, it's just good luck.

Or if you all are really that perfect
Then just write "I--without sin--cast the first stone!"

i really hope you not using porn in a negative statement!

Its a sad reflection on our society when someone even has to ask if they can keep something they know they were supposed to return.

No, never

My sentence which appears to compare pirate, porn, and theft was poorly written and thought out. I messed up

It's actually funny because I call that group elected officials and have to address them as your honor or the honorable.

So a starving homeless man steals a loaf of bread for his starving homeless children.

vs

Rich man steals loads of money and jewellery from a vulnerable old lady just for the fun of it.

According to you: THEFT IS THEFT LOCK EM ALL UP, ALL AS BAD AS EACH OTHER.

This thread inspired me to ask Apple if I can keep the charger of the unit I have to send back and their reply was that they will charge me if I don't return it.

That should answer the OP's question!

Theft is theft. Theres a such thing as mitigating circumstances. However, there is no mitigating circumstances in the OPs case. He's stealing, not because he can't afford to eat, but simply cause he wants something for free.

OP - you know candy bars at supermarkets are free right? You just go in and pick one up and put it in your pocket.

It only costs them a few pennies so it's not a big deal. Nobody cares. And anyone who calls you a thief is just a drama queen.

Feel free to take a box. They're only candy bars.

Beyond vague moral argument, nothing is free, someone is going to have to pay for it. Do you return the favor to a company that has some of the best CS across any industry and feel ok with it? Or do you just keep the charger owing it up to the fact that others will burden the cost? Your choice, but "free" is not the word you're looking for.
