For me "sucks" describes something bad, tasteless, something done sloppy, something that shouldn't have happened. Judging from your comments, it's not that it flat out doesn't work for you, just that you wish it worked from more angles and faster.

So with that in mind, I have to ask - is "sucks" really the first thing that comes to your mind when talking about a system that recognizes your face, even in pitch darkness? I mean, there are aspects of it that are not perfect sure, but at the same time it's some really advanced tech, it's futuristic, it's something I only dreamed of as a kid. It's one step closer to Star Trek, and sure, there are certain improvements that will make it even better, but I am always surprised by the amount of negativity and cynicism about new technologies from people, especially on a forum like this. Once, computers used to excite people, now it's "my phone doesn't recognize me from EVERY angle". You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm certanly glad I'm still able to enjoy cutting edge technology. Yes, even if it takes 0.8s longer to unlock (although I think it's faster in practice, but that's besides the point).

Here's an example to illustrate what I mean: imagine you could unlock your phone with your MIND. Someone comes up with the technology that somehow reads your brain waves and you have to think of the word "unlock" and the lock screen will go away. But it takes a second longer than the classical method of unlock and sometimes it happens that it misinterprets your thoughts and you have to try again. But it's ****ing MIND UNLOCK! I would be incredibly excited to try and use this tech. But critics from Macrumors? They would want their Touch ID back.

Talk about glass half empty.

Broooo...... you’re taking this waaaaaay too seriously. Trust me, I’m thankful to have a phone, let alone an iPhone X. I myself know these are first world problems... I’m not sitting at home fuming over it. It was just a post. Would I like to have Touch ID back? Sure. Do I miss it, yes. Am I going to write a 3 paragraph post about it..... nope.... lol. It’s not that deep to me.... Bro. Get out. Get some fresh air..... it’s beautiful outside. Don’t take these posts so seriously and personal.....

Going for personal attacks now, instead of arguments, eh? Dude.... I'm not loosing sleep over this, but you are on a tech forum, discussing technology with people who like discussing technology. If you think that's lame or anything, "want to get some fresh air", be my guest, but don't start topics unless you're willing to talk about them. Especially those with overreacting titles.

Bro. Your response to my post was just a little over the top, that’s all I’m saying. Unless you’re an IPhone developer or an actual iPhone X, there was no need for it. Your calling my response to you a personal attack when I’m actually it’s merely a response to your response.... which seemed very personal to me... I’m not mad at all man. Nothing personal here at all. I’m just saying relax man. No need to come at me like that. I’m talking about a phone... nothing more. I don’t think I’m hurting Apple or the iPhones feelings. It shouldn’t be hurting yours as well../

How is it a first world problem? However, look at the context of your thread title, its saying Is it me or does “Face ID suck”, you don’t seem to be open to criticism because why you believe this and when someone does conflict with your post, you’re not open to others views. Technology is not perfect, and I don’t think it’s expected to be, but I would say Face ID is fairly well recepted for what it is and I like to use the comparison where touch ID started, and how it refined nicely over the years, just as Face ID will. Everyone’s experience will vary with Face ID, but the re-learn process by entering your passcode has improved others success in unlocking.

It virtually never fails for me, and it’s definitely more reliable than Touch ID was on my 6s+... it’s been fantastic for me and I wouldn’t want to go back to the fingerprint scanner

On extended use, I’d rather have a higher (relatively speaking) failure rate that’s less annoying than a low failure rate that would prompt you tomwipe both your finger and touchID sensor.

I never had to enter my passcode when it fails, just raise the iphone again to re-trigger face ID.

It being a first world problem is me saying it’s not a major issue for me to in my life and it’s not that deep to me. Im saying there are people around the world would love to have an iphone, let alone any phone. So I’m thankful to be able to to have an iPhone... hell im thankful for a roof over my head, food to eat everyday, and I life that I love.
The problem here isn’t that about criticism, because at the end of the day it’s my opinion about Face ID. Do I think it’s amazing that I can open my phone with my face? Absolutely! Do I think it’s as easy or as fast as Touch ID, no. And that’s all I’m saying. There’s no need to get upset about it at all. Unless you took part in making the phone or Face ID. It’s my opinion. And everyone should be allowed to have one and stand by it. a Face ID hadn’t ruined my life. Im not trying to start a war or fight with anyone about it online. Im just not crazy about it. If you love it. That’s great. If you hate it, that’s ok too. Im not going to put you down for how you feel about something. Lol

No, you were saying it sucks.

And I was saying that I find it disappointing how some advanced, futuristic technology comes along and people say it sucks because it takes half a second longer to authenticate.

So which is it? Do you truly think it "sucks" as your thread title states. Or are you "just not crazy about it." There is a big difference between the two.

Compared to Touch ID, I think it sucks. Compared to other problems I’ve had in life, I’m not crazy about it.

FaceID was horrible for me, when I first got the iPhone X. It worked around 80%, but since then, its been much better, in fact I'd say it works close to 99% and so my earlier complaints are not longer valid. I'm quite happy with FaceID

What made it better? I’ve heard also that it gets better over time. I’ve only had the phone for a couple weeks now, so I’m wonder if it’ll get better for me as well...

I didn't do anything, so I don't know. Maybe it was various updates to iOS or it just needed extra time to learn my face. I suspect the former over the latter because I went for a couple of months with issues, and suddenly just recently, I noticed it much much better

So I have to be honest... I finally broke down and got the iPhone X... I'm coming from a 5s... So it was kind of overdue for me to get a new phone... While I think the new iPhone X is cool... I have to admit ID is pretty horrible compared to the touch ID. It's a step backwards. There were so many situations where it was easy to open my phone with Touch ID, where it's hard to open it with Face ID. And there are a too many situations where I just can't open the phone at all (because it doesn't recognize me...) unless I use my password... I'm disappointed... Is apple really getting rid of touch ID forever? Or are they going to introduce it back into the glass of the next iPhone? Also, can this face ID be improved with a software update? Or am I stuck with it like it is?
It's you.

I agree. This is a great example of how Face ID is completely reliable for some and others who claim face ID does not work at all for them. Sometimes I think we don’t know all the variables of why someone is complaining about Face ID not working as intended, but I also think some are still in the accepting phase that they don’t know they if like Face ID or not, which is why they are quick to judge at times, or; perhaps they have not given Face ID enough of a chance to evolve or improve, in which case it will.

I think people were more tolerant with TouchID as it enabled wanted features i.e. biometric security and Apple Pay and it improved with V2.

FaceID brings nothing new to the table, I’m guessing most would have been happy with under screen touchid if it could have been done. There weren’t threads asking for FaceID.

Hence it’s new, in need of a V2 will will no doubt come at some point but hasnt enabled any new functionality, on that basis more people will find fault on top of the bugs that exist in any V1.

No, nothing of the sort. The fact that I think you’re overreacting when you say Face ID sucks did nothing bad to my day or week :)

I’m just commenting, man. It’s not emotional.

No its not, and that sort of answer isn't helpful either.

Honestly, I was about to write the same thing when I saw the title of the topic.

I know it’s not helpful, but after trying Face ID and after understanting how much amazing engineering and design went into making it work, if your question was “does Face ID suck or is it me?” - my answer would also be “it’s you”.

All polls show that a vast majority of users are really happy with it, so I’m almost certain most criticism here is emotional and not rational. I’m sure some users may have certain issues with it (I totally believe you when you said you had trouble at first), but take a look at all the negative posts here and it shows something else entirely. Macrumors is the only pocket universe where people claim Touch ID is better. And I can promise you, in a few years, when Apple introduces a technology that remotely scans your DNA to unlock your iPhone, these people will be wishing their Face ID was still there. People resist change. Just remember all the negativity surrounding Touch ID a few years ago.

I wish they kept touchID on the back for the people who prefer it. Simple and would save me time when FaceID inevitably doesn't work (aka bed / mask on)

That's whats annoying about it. I don't want to have to turn my phone away and bring it back to my face to recognize me. I want it to automatically try again if it fails or see's a different face. If my wife tries to scan her face on my phone it will fail, but if I move in to the frame it doesn't try again. I have to move the phone away and let it scan again. For a 1k phone it should be damn near flawless. Face ID is great but it needs a lot of work. I personally don't think it was ready to hit the market at this time because it can't scan in landscape and it can't scan if the device is flat on a table and you're perpendicular to it. I literally have to hover my face over it for it to see me. It's little things like that, that I can't believe weren't solved when it was being developed.

This is exactly why I cannot accept FaveID over TID.

i miss TouchID but you will have to adapt.

one thing that's cool about FaceID is any apps that need unlocking open automatically when you're looking at your phone/using it during an app switch. so if you had your banking app or something open at one point and left it, when you go back you don't have to unlock again where with TouchID you do

also wet hands don't matter anymore.

plus little things like your phone doesn't dim when you're reading long articles, and it opens up apps from notifications automatically when you look at it which makes it faster

also there are techniques to helping FaceID work faster like re taking your FaceID set up photos like looking down at the camera instead of face forward. it'll make it work faster

Not Apple’s way. That is solving a problem by adding complexity. No, the solution is to find a way to make FaceID better so that it works in almost all scenarios. And that’s what they are doing, I think they are off to a good start. That is Apple’s method and they will never have two parallel methods of biometric unlocks.

That may not be for everyone, and there are upsides and downsides to every approach. Samsung has a completely oposite take on things which is to provide many options. One is not better than the other, it is good that people have a choice between the two. It’s good that we have Apple that is Apple and Samsung that is Samsung.
