I have long hair, if it’s partially covering my face, it doesn’t recognise me. If I don’t shave, it doesn’t recognise me, if I do shave it doesn’t recognise me. I ride a Motorcycle....... obviously problem there, where Touch ID I just needed to take a glove off.

I have to say it doesn’t work at least 50 percent of the time for me. I’m always just putting my passcode in as it’s failed. I’m constantly having to reset it to get it to recognise me again.

Face ID really needs to be coupled with Touch ID, Sony did it on the power button.... why can’t Apple? That or make the Logo the sensor.

If Apple go Face ID only in the future, I will not be getting another iPhone. It has been nothing but a headache for me, it doesn’t even work in landscape mode which is a massive oversight. Sadly locking Apple Pay behind it means you have to have it on.

Also remember that advert of the Woman using it at an extreme angle while it’s laying on a surface. That doesn’t work....

Sounds like you've either got a defective phone or a defective face (you're wearing it wrong).

If possible, I'd recommend a full OS reset. If not, I'd take it in for Apple to service. You shouldn't be having those sorts of issues.

i agree....this is my third X and not one of them has performed like TID did on my 8 plus...

but you will have everyone on here claiming it works for them 100% of the time.....RIIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHTT

also another key factor with TID is apple pay...seamless using apple pay with TID.
FID double click an awkward side button then raise the phone to look at it..i never had to look at the phone it was just there after a double tap with fid

only thing we can hope for is they make it even better going forward...dont think we will see TID again

Agreed totally!!!

I have long hair and my bangs often cover my forehead, no problem. It also recognizes me with my sunglasses on/off, makeup on/off etc.

Best part of all for me is when it’s laying on a surface and I hear a notification, I just go look it. I also don’t need to take my gloves off in freezing WI winters or Touch ID fail because my fingers are too dry etc.

To each their own I guess.

I will never claim 100%.

I don’t know about the 8 Plus, went from the 7 plus to the X. The Touch ID worked 70% of the time and less during dry weather. The Face ID works 95+% of time, irrespective of the season and without having to touch the phone.

Have you tried resetting and "adding" your face back to the FaceID login settings? It should work more often than that... I would estimate that 9 out 10 times it works for me.

It is worth noting that if you hair is covering key points of FaceID (mouth or an eye), it will not work. If I wake up and am squinting still, FaceID won't work. But I wear glasses, and it works with/without those, or with a ball cap, etc.

I would try resetting you FaceID, and redo the FaceID login process. It may have had a bad read when you first set it up from low light or other.

Good job in IOS 12 you can register two faces then...

Sounds like a faulty unit. It shouldn’t make any difference if you shave or not

On my X it doesn't work 100% - maybe only 99.9% of the time.
Obviously, if you are the type of person who is always changing his appearance you wouldn't expect or want it to work. Maybe with the next version that supports multiple faces you could create one with clean face and one with beard

Works great for me. Glasses or no glasses. Clean shaven or goatee. Hat or no hat. Pretty freakin impressive if you ask me.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
So why does it work for some and not others? I’ve seen countless comments all over the Internet with the same opinions. Apple sold it as a device that would learn to recognise you in glasses or hats or not and shaven or not? But still many seem to have issues with it?

And can they fix the Face ID not working in the horizontal position with a software update?

I’m not going to lie Face ID doesn’t work all the time for me either but it’s just like touch ID when it first came out it wasn’t that great and did not work 100% all the time. Every generation that comes out only gets better. So this version may not be that great but the next version will be better!

And that’s unfortunate since people paid a lot for the 10 but it is indeed the first gen. Can’t be too surprised.

You can setup an alternate face in Face ID settings. See if that helps. Also resetting Face ID, a system that uses machine learning to get better and better will have the opposite affect in the long run. The more you use it the better it gets.

Of course if your face changes drastically it will probably have issues. Which is why they’ve added the option for a alternate face.

I really hope they add Touch ID built into the screen, as I’m also not a huge fan with how Face ID works as my main option to unlocking my phone, there’s some situations where it’s great but for the most part Touch ID is way more convenient. Sad to say this but I perfer the 8 Plus to the X, flame jacket is on!

Hey man I’m not a fan of Face ID either, much rather have Touch ID. But here’s one thing that might make your X work better. Reset Face ID and this time while resetting hold it down to your waist standing up and looking down at the phone. Mine has seemed to work a lot better since then.

I hope they do to but they probably won’t, I’ll probably look into the s10 when it comes out, it’s suppose to be coming out with finger print sensor under the display.

It needs to see your eyes open to unlock & get a haircut.
