The 6GiB iPad Pros do close apps fairly often under heavy use compared to the M1 iPads with 8GiB so in that regard there is a noticeable difference for me.
I’ll take your word for it.
I know my use isn’t particularly heavy (mostly note-taking, browsing the web, and the odd edit in affinity photo) and whenever I play games I usually close them manually when I’m done 😆

I recently sold my Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, I originally traded in my 12.9" iPad Pro M1 towards it, Something I regret. I now want to go back to an iPad, I'm thinking the iPad Pro M2 12.9" model. WWDC is right around the corner and we are about 7 months into the M2 iPad Pro update, are Apple likely to announce a new iPad Pro anytime soon and should I just wait?
If you need it now, buy it now. Updates are probably 2024 at the soonest (but rumor is we'll finally have a landscape camera).

I know you appreciate our thoughts and ideas but in the end it’s up to you how badly you want an iPad back I used to try the Samsung tablets I no longer do that. The iPad is so much more superior in its ecosystem. I still have the 12.9 M1 model I will most likely look into upgrading to the bigger model in the future but no need to go to the M2 not a big enough difference

I would personally wait until after WWDC to see what changes iPadOS 17 is gonna bring (if any)

I think software is going to have minimal effect on buying an iPad. Apple announced Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad (M1 and M2 iPad Pro and the 5th gen iPad Air) and that in itself is a BIG software announcement for the iPad. Apple announcing Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad was worthy of being announced at WWDC. It must mean Apple has a lot to announce at WWDC (rumours and leaks are saying Apple will announce the VR headset and a new MacBook Air 15" alongside the usual iOS, iPad OS and so on).

Well there was a rumor that the iPad Pros were gonna get a macOS dualboot mode a while ago, or some other changes to make iPadOS more desktop like when plugged into a magic keyboard and/or external monitor.

Oh that's interesting, there was also this rumour about a special version of iPad OS 17 for larger iPads. Apparently starting with a 14.1" model next year. I do think a larger iPad Pro makes sense, especially now that Apple have announced Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad.

That's why I wanna wait until WWDC before passing judgment on "the right time" to get an iPad Pro. I'm gonna need to get a new iPad soon but lately I've just been using it less and less over my Macbook Pro because macOS has been giving me what I want, and iPadOS has just been letting me down. So I wanna see if THIS YEAR will be the year they bump iPadOS to a point I'm satisfied, or if I'm just gonna have to get an old iPad Pro instead to save money.

the difference between 6GB iPads and 4GB ones is at least as big as that between 8GB ones and 6GB ones in my experience. In addition to reloads, there is also a difference in crashes with RAM hungry apps. For instance DaVinci Resolve crashes very often on 4GB devices when using advanced features, while it generally doesn't on 6GB and 8GB devices.

I have got a lot out of M1 iPad Pro for work. Paid itself very quickly. I love the Apple Pencil, it adds another dimension to IPad. If you need it now for work or something important, get it. If you can wait, not a bad idea to get M3. But any of Mx iPad Pro should be great option.

The new 16" iPad Ultra is supposed to be able to run MacOS Lite. Apple recently received a patent for an iPad keyboard that when used, will turn off iPadOS - and switch on MacOS Lite. Also, while it hasn't been mentioned, I believe Apple will release a special pencil with added features just for the Ultra model. The Apple Pencil adds so much extra usability to iPads, and since the new Ultra model is being geared for "creativity" it just makes sense that a special Pencil be made for the Ultra. Take it with a grain of salt, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Apple did do this.

I thought the macOS Lite rumor was for M2 iPad Pros and above only, not a 16 inch iPad. 16 inch is waaaaaay too big for an iPad.

That would be great. A 16" iPad Ultra would be an instant buy for me!! Also the Ultra name would make sense, Apple started it with the Apple Watch Ultra (Love mine it's by far the best Apple Watch) they are rumoured to be doing it with the iPhone next year, so a iPad Ultra would make sense. It would be less portable but maybe it would have thinner bezels and aimed as an at home style studio tablet.

I think all these rumors should be treated with a lot of salt.... A larger iPad is probably coming, but it could be 2 (14 and 16, with one coming 1 or 2 years earlier than the other) or just one of them. The MacOS Lite rumor is pretty sketchy, I wouldn't take any decision based on the software rumors. Even the MacOS keyboard accessory is an idea Apple maybe playing with but that could never become a real product.
Hopefully rumors will become more precise as we get close to release (hopefully next year, but it could well be pushed further to 2025 or later, there no guarantee).

Agreed, it would be great if Apple did release a 14" or 16" iPad Ultra. I've just had a quick look and found this, it looks like it's been delayed or completely canceled it. Ross Young is very accurate, he's among the ones who have said there is a 15" MacBook Air coming probably at WWDC.

I just bought a refurbished 12.9" iPad Pro (M1) because I don't think the M2 adds any value for my use case. But as with anything, if you want/need it now, buy it now. There's literally always a new one around the corner at some point.

I have been following these rumors very closely (probably more closely than anyone here) with all the back and forth and all the changes and contradictions (and I generally know who is more or less accurate as I follow many Apple rumors, basically daily), that's why I suggest to be very careful and not bet on a larger iPad coming next year or on which of the 2 rumored size it will be... We are at point where rumors are not converging enough to have a clear idea, other than Apple is experimenting with larger iPads.

Yea I'm not going to wait for the bigger iPad, it likely not going to come until next year at the earliest.

Personally, I think the whole reason why Final Cut Pro for iPad and Logic for iPad were not introduced at WWDC is that they will be introducing the iPad Ultra in June (available for sale around September). We shall see in a couple of weeks.

I highly doubt it, if Apple wanted to release a iPad Ultra surely they would want to show off professional software with it and they would have kept Final Cut and Logic Pro until WWDC. Also WWDC will be jam packed with iOS, iPadOS, macOS, WatchOS, TVOS and WatchOS updates as well as the VR headset announcement, the software for the VR headset and on top of all of that there is rumoured to be a 15" MacBook Air that Mark Gurman and others have said is coming at WWDC.

It would be a waste of time for them to talk about FCP/Logic for iPad software more than the video they made and have already released to the public. Of course, they might also have another event between June and September to go over the new iPad models.
