Coming from the digital art industry, I'm seeing a lot more iPads and Surfaces in the younger generation as their primary work devices. With the improvements in Procreate, Photoshop, Clip Studio, etc, PC/Macs aren't as necessary.

(I'll be honest, between tablets and Chinese tablet displays, I'm happy to see Wacom taking a hit)

If this question was asked between 2012 and 2015 I might answer "Maybe". Recently (esp. since iPadOS was released) my answer is a firm "No". There is still some way to go in terms of app availability etc. but I find iPad an increasingly attractive device (and iPadOS a platform) to do "real work" e.g. coding and editing photos. The integration between iPadOS and MacOS means you can easily use the iPad as a sandbox for coding, then transfer the code to MacOS simply to execute. Not to mention SideCar is very useful esp. when out and about with a Mac. As long as one treat iPad as a platform and form factor of its own (instead of expect it to behave like an iPhone/iOS or Mac/MacOS), I think the future seems bright and without limit.

Also great as a virtual fireplace.
IMHO that is a poor choice. Intel-equipped Mac produces much more warmth.

What about running Visual Studio and Eclipse?

I have not tried either on iPad but Pythonista and TablePlus work fine for me so far.

I do Firefox builds and did a Windows build this week to work on a bug. It took two hours to run on a Core-i7 with 48 GB of RAM. I was running a bunch of other things at the same time including Financial Trading Programs, Slack, Zoom, Thunderbird, Firefox (release build), WSL (Linux), iTunes and VNC. On a 4K display.

I do not think that you can do all of this on an iPad.

Nope, and I would not want to use my iPad to do all that in the same way I do on my Mac.

Honestly, I don’t really see the point of this thread. Some people will use it a great deal, some won’t. Some NEED it, some don’t.

Sounds like the OP doesn’t have much use for one, and assumes nobody else will, either.

Thats basically this site in a nutshell. “My use case is the same as everyone else’s in the world”.

iPads aren't going anywhere anytime soon, to be honest with you. In fact, a lot of people who aren't tech savvy has replaced their computers with iPads as that is all they really need at home.

Similarly to how people in many countries use their phone as their primary and only device.

It's easier also if your employer provides you with a PC.

For a lot even in the United States we are seeing that. It may not be their only device but it is certainly the primary.

I am heading in exactly the opposite direction, using my iPad Pro for more and more, and the Mac less and less. I find the iPad Pro (with Magic keyboard) quicker, more reliable, as well as more pleasurable to use.

Shows we are all different, and lucky to have a choice.
Same. For some reasons, I prefer typing on the magic keyboard case over my real magic keyboard 2 with numeric keypad. I think its just easier and more enjoyable feeling to type on this case. Before I had this case, I was also used my ipad pro 12,9 almost only for my media needs but since then its now my daily device of choice and I use it for practically anything. I only use my mac now when my ipad is charging or for stuff I still prefer to do it on a real computer.

It worked for VHS against Betamax and Blu-Ray over HD-DVD...
Its true for VHS vs Beta, but I don’t think its the case for Blu-Ray VS HD-DVD. i think the Blu-Ray format wins because of the PlayStation 3 had one from the start and was considered one of the best BR player at that time and many people had one immediately compared to the slow adoption of the HD-DVD format. When these new formats came out, porn was already very strong via the internet and even in 2006-07, I didn’t knew anyone who still watched porn on DVD or Blu-Rays.

I use CoolerMaster TKL Gaming keyboards. I like long key-travel, tactile and aural feedback and the ability to see the keys in the dark. They are not good in an open office environment. Probably not good in a cube either as they are quite loud.

If you put it with me, iPads are most likely going to be one of the biggest changes coming from Apple.

You can tell with what they are introducing to the iPads they are including portable keyboards and adding many sorts to its function.

If you haven’t hopped onto the iPad wagon I would start hopping lol

In a word (indeed one straight from the horse's mouth):

dims

Apple still see both platforms (macOS and iPad OS) as viable going forward with no plans to merge them. Sales of both lines are strong and they have stated ad nauseam that each has its own particular strengths which they want to continue to develop individually.
Aren’t they planning to merge them into some midway mush to use their arm chips?

I think the iPad is lost between the iPhone (mobility+power) and the new Macs (real pro apps, usability and productivity). If Apple launch a MacBook Pro with 5G, Catalyst may be the salvation for the iPad app developers.

I use iPad as a big clock.

Gal/Dude, the fact that you do not have a use case for an iPad does not mean it is the same for everyone 🙄

There are tons of applications for the iPad ranging from just a simple media consumption on a bigger screen to some very professional applications. To me the recent crisis with people staying home and consuming lots of media as well as kids having to learn remotely made the iPad (and other tablets, for that matter), even more relevant.

No, it’s not dying. It still has a long way to go to being a proper product, imo. This isn’t me invalidating the use cases that people have shared, my point is that Apple need to take it more seriously - especially with the software. iPadOS was a promising distinction but imo this year they went in the opposite direction - they held back features made available in iOS and didn’t focus on the issues that make it painful to work with (multi-tasking, files etc). They introduced Scribble, which I’ve enjoyed using but it doesn’t fix unintuitive design.

I agree with you on this. iPadOS 14 is very, very disappointing at a point I don’t understand Apple on this one. This year it’s literally a barebone version of iOS 14 instead of really improving the iPad experience.
iPadOS 13.4 brings more to the iPad with mouse support and keyboard costumize shortcuts than the whole iPadOS 14 itself...

The OP made this exact same post over in the macOS forum, but with the title "Is macOS dying?". Apparently, it's a pandemic of Apple product deaths.
