Another part of the issue is the Xs showing service but not being able to actually do anything.

Just like in real estate, location location location. Many live in an area with excellent coverage and will never have an issue, even if the phone has one.
I live on the edge of a dead area and the phone was useless at my house, even with WiFi calling. I boxed it up and returned it and back to my X. I loved the xs max but what can you do.

WiFi calling uses WiFi....so how does your location have anything to do with your WiFi calling not working?

my contact is saying that there is nothing in this update that improves cellular connectivity and that they are still looking into it.

You might want to mention to your contact that he/she should read the iOS 12.1 release notes! :D

- Improves cellular connectivity for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR

Now whether anything is ACTUALLY fixed or not is another story. But saying that nothing was fixed in 12.1 seems a bit odd when the release notes directly contradict that statement.

Curious to hear - with the new update, is the cellular connectivity all good now?

I posted this earlier today:

So, good news and bad. The good news is that the release did have an impact: my XS no longer constantly drops down to 4G. It holds a steady LTE connection no matter where I walk in my house, which wasn't the case an hour earlier on release 12.01.

In certain parts of the house, my LTE speeds are back up to 8+ levels! However, in areas where the connection is weaker, the speeds remain terrible: my latest speedtest was .34 Mbps down. A few minutes earlier it was .06 Mbps down. In a way, the release has made the phone worse, as it was faster when it constantly dropped down to 4G.

Final thoughts: 12.1 fixed the LTE connection issue, strengthening the phone's grip on LTE. It had no impact on weaker LTE signals however, with weak connections remaining extremely problematic for the phone.
I 100% realize that my case is unique, and doesn't apply to everyone else here.

I'm actually on hold with 1-800-IPHONE right now trying to describe the problem to Apple.

For everybody that is saying that they have better or worse results can you post what carrier you are on and I will pass that info on to them.

Of course they'll work with others. You really need to call and open a support case however. They won't take you or anyone else seriously if you don't call and open a case. The more cases that are opened, the more serious a software company will take ANY issue. This is how items get prioritized when engineers are tasked with investigating bugs/issues.

800-MY-IPHONE is the phone number.

For those of you having connection issues, I highly, highly recommend doing what jkozlow3 suggests: call 800-MY-IPHONE, and open up a case. I just did, and it took about ten minutes.

After speaking to the initial support person, he routed me to the Senior Engineering team, who have a team of folks looking at this particular issue. I was asked to install two loggers on my phone (which took about a minute in total to do) and I've been asked to take three Speedtest screenshots tomorrow, along with one of my results page. Apple will be collecting data in the background in the meantime.

As jkozlow3 mentioned, the more of us with connection issues that do this, the better.

You're resetting it wrong! (My apologies to Mr. Jobs!).

Seriously, I was hoping for good news here. I'm still chuckling at those people who think that there's not a problem and that those of us with serious issues are doing something improperly. I would invite anyone who has an AT&T XS/Max and is near the Fort Wayne area to come and take a drive with me so that we can compare reception in areas like SW Allen Co., driving across IN SR 14, US 24 from Huntington to Wabash, etc. I would be THRILLED if I could see a Max perform as well as my 8+ in those areas. My previous 2 Maxes failed and failed miserably in those locations as well as many, many others while driving across the US.
Is room and board provided? Lol

really interesting. Is this a true fix, or is a fast solution to hide a big problem that they cant fix until next gen? lets wait this days to the costumers...

NOt good. Download speed its better yes.. but no so good for a 2 year new model device. Upload speed sucks
I’ve noticed that upload speeds were always slower than my 7+ while DL was almost always faster.

I think there are two different issues, cell reception and WiFi reception. Yes WiFi should be able to handle the calls if your in a bad area, but I just couldn’t get it to work.

At home, LTE speeds have always been abysmal at best. This has remained true through 3 different carriers (on Verizon at the moment), and a number of different phones. Our internet tops out at 200 mbps, so WiFi is doing really good.

I don’t know off hand what our internet speeds at work are supposed to be. I think it’s supposed to be around 50 mbps, so not too shabby there. However the LTE around that place is worse than abysmal even though I have 4-5 bars there, and only 2-3 at home. However my home LTE speeds are better. Riddle me that.
