After 12.1 update my cell stayed on par with my 7+ and my 5ghz WiFi is pretty solid now.

Oh and my upload speeds on cellular have drastically improved.

I never had issues with dropping LTE coverage, but definitely saw reduced speeds vs 7+. I don’t have a 7+ to compare to anymore, but my download speeds on the XS Max seem to still be about 20 mb/s slower than the 7+ with 12.1... however, upload speeds have doubled. On Verizon.

Also, low quality antenna hardware.
Let's cheap out and buy the modem that is .000000001 cents cheaper per unit on a $1000 phone.

But hey, we use Arsenic Free Glass!

Updated to 12.1 at the World Trade Center yesterday while waiting on my fiancé. We took the train to Hoboken and then took the main line. Anyone that takes that route knows how horrible the coverage is.. my signal was on par or better than her X. Even was able to get data thru a couple of times when she couldn’t.
Overall it seems to be better. This morning at Newark airport, everything is running great. The true test will be today when I drive from Kansas City to Memphis TN..

(Don’t ask about the random flight along with drive). It’s been a heck of a 3 weeks

I updated to 12.1 yesterday.

The only weak area I am really in is at my desk at work. It’s weird.. two bars at work and could see the issues with weak signal (10 Mbps or less) but at home 2 bars I get over 100 Mbps down.

At work I was getting 10 Mbps or less down before 12.1... Now I am getting over 20 and it still shows 2 bars. It is still highly inconsistent.. but I never got over 20 before.

Updated and my LTE speeds have remained the same as before.

I updated yesterday to 12.1. My concerns all along have been about basic connectivity in weaker signal areas, rather than ul/dl speeds. So far, I’m not noticing much, if any, improvement there. Let’s see how today goes.

For those of you having connection issues, I highly, highly recommend doing what jkozlow3 suggests: call 800-MY-IPHONE, and open up a case. I just did, and it took about ten minutes.

After speaking to the initial support person, he routed me to the Senior Engineering team, who have a team of folks looking at this particular issue. I was asked to install two loggers on my phone (which took about a minute in total to do) and I've been asked to take three Speedtest screenshots tomorrow, along with one of my results page. Apple will be collecting data in the background in the meantime.

As jkozlow3 mentioned, the more of us with connection issues that do this, the better.

Hi folks, an update:

I've been running Speedtests galore ever since I called Apple, opened up a case, and installed two loggers for them. Initially, after installing the loggers, and resetting network settings (all of this on 12.1), I was still obtaining horrible data rates -- I had a number of 0.01 Mbps results. For some reason last night, I decided to power off & on the phone, and ever since then, my rates have substantially improved, ranging from 2 - 8 Mbps.

(Those rates may not sound like much, but I was always an edge case--there's just something about my house in DC that pulls in a terrible AT&T connection. My unlocked 8+, with a Qualcomm modem, had spoiled me prior to the XS.)

For those of you who have upgraded to 12.1 and are still receiving terrible speeds, try restarting your phone. No promises, but it definitely made a difference for me.

That's only a temp fix and is the same as resetting network settings. The problems will likely return at some point and time .

Ahem - its the Qualcomm modems in iPhone 7s that are the subject of the "No Service" replacement program. Intel models are not part of the program.

Qualcomm is totally overrated and nothing more than patent trolls at this point.

Can’t really speak to QC’s ‘patent troll’ status, but I can assure you that in our area the QC sim-free phones do a WHOLE LOT better with receiving AT&T signals than the AT&T Intel GSM only devices.

And for what’s it’s worth, go back and look at my previous posts regarding the two Max’s that I used while driving 5K miles and you’ll see that my biggest complaint was the amount of time that my Intel phones were stuck on ‘No Service’.

So while QC may well have issues, Intel is definitely not winning any awards here.

You should borrow a friend's sim card from another network for a few minutes and see if it changes anything...would be interesting to see.
Not the person you're replying too, but I have a video of my 7 and my XS, with similar RSRP0 values, on the same network, and the 7 is getting 4-7 mbps up and my XS is getting .5. Downstream is totally fine for me, I'm getting outstanding results. 12.1 did nothing to improve the situation and it's frustrating because I use Siri in my car a lot and it's slow to respond because the upstream bandwidth is so bad.

iOS 12.1. Same SIM, same spot:

Same exact thing I'm seeing on TMo in north Atlanta suburbs. XS is blazing on downloads, horrible on uploads. 7 is fast on downloads (but slower than XS) but gets a respectable 4-6 upstream whereas the XS is at .5

Nope - I hear you - but I wouldn't assume Qualcomm is any better. They've just been at it longer.

FWIW - AT&T in my area has never been an issue - had an Intel 7, and now an XS. The XS is way faster, getting close to 100 Mbps down on speed tests. Holds onto signals better too. Not sure if the Max is really any different to cause issues though, since I don't have one I can't speak to it.

1 train! Presumably same outcomes with 2/3 as well.

Interesting...I also take the 1 train. This morning I noticed a little bit of signal at certain stations, but it was slow to appear...like, it would finally pop up just as the train was pulling back out of the station. Hm.
