I HUNGER
My problem is that I really want a Max, but I will use it in more than one country, so even if it's fine for me where I live, it may be rubbish when I travel and that's unacceptable. I won't know though until I actually get on a plane next month and by that stage the return window is over.

I found some interesting claim online...

I was watching some IOS TODAY Youtube show (on something called the TWiT network! haha... do Americans know what that means in UK/Oz English?) last night and the host reckons that Pokemon Go is buggy and is causing trouble for the new iPhones in relation to LTE and freezing etc. Dunno who the bloke is from a bar of soap, but I thought I'd ask here if people with LTE problems have Pokemon Go installed.

I very much doubt it is this, but you never know. And it seems a poster or two on this thread has stated that 12.1.1 has some fixes for LTE, so waiting it out a little more may be the way to go. Then if it's not fixed it really is game over until 2019. For me at least for the Max. I'm leaning more and more towards an XR atm.

EDIT: Do we absolutely know for sure that the internals of the XS series are identical? Are there two different companies sourcing certain parts inside the phone this time round? I don't know, but just trying to think of possible reasons why some people are fine and others are not.

So I wasn’t having issues before the update. Since the update my WiFi is having issues with dropping, connecting, loading. It’s driving me nuts!

I own an XS Max, bought in the US but using it in Europe with Spanish Vodafone and my cell signal seems to be better. In general there are no connectivity issues in my region but in why basement at home I have low coverage and it seems to be more stable in iOS 12.1

I never had good reception at home. Only 1-2 bars of service (out of the 4). With the new update, I got 3 bars for the first time (out of 4)

I have a backup internet for my home network that runs off the same cellular connection, but with a dedicated high sensitivity direction antenna... and that doesn't go higher than 4 bars out of 5, so I think my XS is doing pretty well.

After the 12.1 update didn’t fix cellular issues.. I’m really starting to think that it may be hardware. And I was against this thought from the beginning. Usually Apple is quick with software updates to fix a problem.
Only other thought is that they are rewriting the 4x4 mimo code after finding a fundamental flaw.
Hence. Why the XR, which is using the old 2x2, is having no issues.

Did you try the ol' Reset Network Settings trick?

My WiFi is working SO much better since 12.1!

Wi-Fi reset and now I’m getting three/four bars instead of two, however I never really had a problem as others have mentioned. Right now at my same location I’m now getting three bars steady which was not the case before and I was getting two bars, so maybe the reset with the new 12.1 is working for some.

For me while bars went up , Data speeds on LTE remains same. Which shows quality of signal may be not that good. Speedtest app shows high jitter compared to other phones. This may be linked to hardware issues or a software code related to mimo

Off topic - but no one is answering me in the other thread, so I’ll try here.

I bought the 30W charger and cord for fast charging. I know it will work with my iPhone X. My iPad Pro 9.7 is not compatible. However, will the fast charger still work with the iPad but at a lower charging rate?

Any down side to fast charging?

Or your cell tower is overloaded, or your data is being throttled :p

took the 1 train to 42nd from 96th and it reliably connected at every station. and then the N train to Canal, and again quick connection except at 14th St oddly.

times square was a big improvement. I’d have to stand there 5-7 minutes before LTE popped up; today it did right when i entered the station.

So this was my experience this morning with the 1 train commute, seeing if I got signal (and could make calls) from those stations where I’d (for the most part) been able to previously with my 6 and with my X:

4 LTE bars at 110th St. Station while on platform - tried to make a call, dropped to zero bars...I suspect indicator was showing the last best signal and not updating promptly

2 LTE bars at 96th St. - Two bars showing but could not make a phone call. Dead silence, never connected at all.

2 LTE bars at 72nd St. - Was able to make a call and hear the other line ringing, but left station before the call went through.

66th St. - “No Service”. No bars.

59th St. - 3 bars of 3G. No time to try calling.

50th St. - No bars. “No Service” showing in Control Center.

42nd St./Times Square - In station for maybe 40 seconds. LTE indicator but no bars. Tried calling my home, silence, “call failed” notification in phone app.

34th St. - Showing “3G” indicator, no bars.

28th St. - “3G” indicator, no bars. Call failure. Indicator switched to “LTE”, before we left station, still no bars.

23rd St. - LTE, no bars, “Call Failed”

18th St. - “No Service” No bars.

14th St. - “No Service” No LTE indicator, no bars. “Call Failed” I was on the platform for a little while and “LTE” came back but with no bars. Then four bars before I got back on train but I still couldn’t make a phone call. Silence.

So it seems as a fellow Max owner, with a similar commute, on Verizon on iOS 12.1, you are having way better luck than I am! What’s your secret?

Perhaps your phone is truly defective if you and the other member are having different experiences on the same train with the same device and carrier?

I remember a few years back having all kinds of network issues with my brand new iPhone (6S I believe). My phone would frequently have trouble (re)connecting to networks and/or would show me that I had a strong LTE signal but I frequently couldn't use my phone for voice or data. My wife's brand new iPhone wasn't having issues. A network settings reset didn't help. As a last-ditch effort, before going to the Apple store to request a replacement, I decided to do a DFU restore and reinstall iOS and set up the device as a brand new device (I never restore from backup). Anyway, this fixed all of my issues. It seems like the iOS install from the factory got corrupted somehow and was responsible for my problems. I never had any issues after the DFU restore.

Perhaps something is wrong with your device?

That is horrible. I'd take it to an Apple store and get a replacement. If they're not willing to replace it and you're within the return window, return it and buy another.

Good luck.

Verizon - iOS 12.1 ...

I am also seeing an uptick on uploads. Somewhat respectable even. My downloads were always good if not great. It was my uploads that were pathetic. 12.1 brought my uploads back to life. The jury is still out though but initial impressions are favorable.

Well, quoting myself here ...

I am having the symptom of if I go airplane mode and back on ... cell is awesome ... for a few minutes.

Then it is like the phone flips frequencies and cell performance gets lame. Downloads are okay, but uploads are really bad.

I am not sure if this is a phone or carrier issue though.

Thanks. So the fast charger won’t do any damage to the iPad which doesn’t support fast charging. It will just charge slower, correct?

No, the adapter auto-negotiates the charging rate. It might still charge faster if you had the 5W or 10W charger, I think you can draw bit more.

The added bonus is the 30W charge will also run cooler.

I have half a dozen of the 87W MacBook Pro chargers. They charge everything I have since they can do iPhone, iPad, AirPods, plus my MacBook Pros, Android phones, battery packs, and many of my PC laptops that use USB-C as well. It's perfect.

I believe you can always use a higher wattage charger vs. what came with your device. The device will simply draw less power. However, I remember seeing something on Apple's site years ago that said never to use a LOWER wattage charger than what came with your device (i.e. don't use a 5W charger to charge your iPad) and that doing so could potentially damage some devices that need more power to charge vs. what the charger can provide.
