Do both the XS & XSM have that antennae on thd bottom that took away the speaker symmetry? IYAM, it took something serious to have that happen.

I don't think you want to eliminate the 5GHz band. The issue is that the XS/Max will get stuck on the 2.4GHz band, even in circumstances where it should use 5GHz. Leave the 5GHz network enabled so your other devices are still able to use it.

If you must, you could name the 5GHz network something different and connect your devices to the two separate networks manually.

This is what I ended up doing. I didn't quite understand the issue people were describing. I renamed the 5ghz version so I can change manually. I'm still having a ton of connectivity issues with my new phone. I hope there is a way to fix this all.

Yeah, it's a hassle-- more of a hassle than a >$1200 phone should be causing. I am able to blacklist devices on my network on each individual band, so I just blacklisted my Max from the 2.4GHz network to force it onto the 5GHz bands. This works for me, since my apartment isn't that large and the 5GHz signal reaches everywhere just fine.

For people with larger living spaces (or spaces with more obstructions), they will have to either:

  • A) Separate the SSIDs out and manually connect to the 5GHz band and remain there, which means more rapidly decreasing signal strength when moving further from the access point or potential dead zones.
  • B) Separate the SSIDs out and manually switch back and forth between the bands based on the signal strength they are getting from each in any given location.
  • C) Leave both bands named the same thing and just deal with their iPhone getting stuck on the 2.4GHz band-- resulting in a potentially slower (in some cases, MUCH slower) connection versus the 5GHz band.

Yes, both have the antenna bands at the bottom and top of the phone for 4x4 MIMO support. Have you already forgotten that all of the previous phones that had a headphone jack were not symmetrical on the bottom? It didn't take much to need to make it asymmetrical once again, adding a feature people were asking for seemed good enough.

Loadtimes on web pages are significant higher on my new Xs Max than on my old phone (android). Also Instagram actually "loads" all pictures, previously when opening the app they were just there. Also when i run speed tests it comes short compared to the old low price android. in addition it changes to Edge quite a lot, strange thing being that i had the same carried for the last 4-5 years, and had both iphones and an android device, and none of them has even switched to Edge.

Finally saw this issue on my max. Over my fiance’s House I would typically have 1-2 bars of service, but it was still perfectly usable. Now I get only one bar and literally half of my requests time out - I can’t even stream a song from Apple Music. The phone also refused to stay connected to her WiFi which is a room away.

This is pretty much the worst iPhone I have used since antennagate, except this time there is no wrong way to hold it - it just doesn’t work.

Don’t think I’m affected as speed wise

On my xs max
50mb and 19MB up

iPad Pro
47 MB down and 18 up

Signal is low but it always is at home.

Aside from the 5ghz wifi issue- the modem is really terrible at re-acquiring signals. you can go to airplane modem to speed this up but if you lose signal it waits a long time before re-acquring even if you just stepped out of an elevator etc.

I have same issue, but I had same issue with iPhone 8 Plus. Was hoping Apple would fix with the XS Max.

My home access points have a ‘band steering’ setting so i already had it set to 5ghz.
I also had recently upgraded the APs as my original ones didn’t support ac - it was rather new at the time. The new ones also have MIMO and my wireless is super fast (I also recently went to fiber to the house for same price I was paying for 40% the speed).
I really like my UBNT network setup. It was crazy to see the bump in my mbp and phones performance - very noticeable.

Net: Older infrastructure can limit capability and there’s a lot of new enabling tech out there.

I am just pissed beyond words. There has been no word from apple, when I speak with them; they refer me to Sprint. And then I am stuck in a cycle of Sprint reps (including executives I’ve spoken to) that are constantly getting me to do the same things as the last person I talked to!! They continue to tell me they can even see on their end that my phone is refusing to fully activate.

factory restore it? Someone else had this same issue and if I remember right that's what they did. Or just exchange it.
This is different than what most here are experiencing.

I don't have to do any of this. Mine just works.

So I haven’t had any major issues with the reception of my xs.. if anything it is faster and picks up signal in more Places.
However... I did notice that where i get 60+ Mbps on my computer, I was consistently only getting 20 on my iPhone X’s after reading this thread I tried it on my x running iOS 12 and noticed the same thing. So I did what this thread suggested and turned off the 2.4 ghz network and forced it to being 5 only and I’m back to getting 60 + on the xs. I personally think most of these issues are software and firmware related.

I already tried the factory restore with iTunes and it had no change.

I'm more impressed they were able to get 90+ XSMax phones at launch. Is this law firm doing work for Apple or something?

I'm currently at my office. I checked to see if AT&T has sent out any sneaky update to their firmware...still AT&T 33.2. However I do notice that it's connected to "AT&T Wi-Fi" even though I have 4 bars. That's concerning. Or it could mean nothing and that it will only use Wi-Fi if absolutely necessary.
