Well, my 3rd XS just arrived from Apple. Straight out of the box I set it up as a new phone, updated to 12.0.1, and installed the Speedtest app and ran three tests. Serial # is F17XG5.... for what its worth.

Signal in my office is weak, which I'm thinking is my best option for re-assessing the phone since I have full bars at home.

First 3 Speedtest results (Verizon in Houston) to local Comcast server:
1) 0.74/0.15
---failed to connect for 2nd test...waited a few minutes
2) 0.06/0.07
3) 0.09/0.15
---failed to connect for a 4th test.

3 speed tests taken immediately afterwards with sim back in X (Qual):
1) 8.54/1.04
2) 8.21/1.22
3) 8.44/1.87

Note: both are indicating 2 "bars" of service. I'm pretty close to just totally surrendering at this point.

Just out of curiosity what part of Houston are you in/ Taking these results?

Weird, no issues on Verizon here in Houston for me.

So far my new iPhone Xs is working pretty well. Signal is a little lower than my Pixel 2 but speeds have been on par.
I should say I am on T-Mobile in an area of Pennsylvania that only has LTE Band 2. At most the data speeds are 80 mbps but where I usually am at it’s only 30 mbps and that’s what I am getting.
And same with my WiFi. The company I work for pays for my internet and the speed is capped at 30 mbps.

It's not about data speeds it's about 24-7 flowing data and dropped calls . Stream something and drive around or make a call and drive around in places where a 7,8 work fine the XS will not and it's not even close .

For clarity, do you mean LTE speed or your speed over WiFi?
LTE :)
[doublepost=1539305450][/doublepost]

spoke too early. Call disconnects and LTE data issues started again on new phone. On call with apple again. They want me to restore as new phone and use it for a day. ( crap).

On T-Mobile and coming from the X...LTE is similar if not the same. If I have WiFi calling on I’m fine...WiFi speeds seem fine no issues, but on Tuesday I was at an event in your average banquet hall, 1000 people; without WiFi and had 3 to for 4 bars at times and couldn’t connect to the internet and receive group iMessages, long delay compared to my coworkers on the group message next to me who always have iPhones, I believe they were 7 or 8. I was about to throw my phone across the wall!! First experience since launch I have been livid and to where I’m about to contact apple and T-Mobile!
Hate to say it I’m looking at the pixel 3 Xl (yes even with the notch) if this doesn’t get fixed!

Yeah, I have a pre order for Best Buy store pickup next Thursday on a 3XL myself. I’m sure that will get flamed responses since this is macrumors but the notch is not that bad in person - it basically was as offensive to me as the X the first time I saw it, which I’ve come to like in time. But this is just ridiculous at this point (and price point) to not provide at least an acknowledgement or loose accomodation plan. I guess if we are expected to be stupid enough to believe a fast charger should be an additional 70.00 purchase, we are stupid enough to believe there’s not a problem in their eyes. Lol.

I’m puzzled as to why I sometimes have low upload and download LTE speeds but, my phone works great. My wife’s 7+ is the same and no problems with her connectivity either. Actually, the LTE speeds for both of our phones is quite inconsistent but, they both work great.
So I finally got my 7 unlocked from AT&T and put my TMo Sim in it and compared to my wife's XS. The issue seems to be how Apple is handling band 66. We got identical performance in speed test when on band 12 (Extended LTE) and we have nearly identical numbers in field test on band 12. But the 7 would only connect to band 4 whereas the XS connects to band 66. 66 is an extension of 4 so it makes sense why the 7 can't connect, it's a newer technology. But when I ran speedtests the download was similar but the upload was DRASTICALLY worse on the XS. The 7 was getting 6-7 mbps whereas the XS was getting .3 mbps. Additionally, they had nearly identical signal numbers in field test mode.

I'm definitely feeling this is a software issue.

Really? Yeah.. I would be pi$$ed.

at least give it a fighting chance, turn cellular data roaming on.
Yeah, I couldn't send a picture imessage this past weekend when I was in a low signal area for a camping trip.

I’ve been lucky enough to not have any WiFi or LTE issues. I actually get better service in poor service areas and buildings compared to my X.

Did you check to see if they were on the same bands and towers? Without doing that, these tests aren’t really conclusive in any way. If the problem is the XS is hanging on to a weaker signal band too long, that would mean side by side a phone without that issue, or a phone on a stronger signal band, would outperform it.

I’m almost positive this is a software issue as well. The weaker antenna performance isn’t as drastic and some want to imply. If we’re a hardware issue alone, many of the (temporary) improvements people have seen would not be happening. In addition the vast majority here aren’t making sure they’re comparing apples to apples when it comes to towers and bands connected to when seeing issues on one phone with another right beside it doing better. They’re too quick to jump onto the modem manufacturer.

I’m not happy with all of this but some of the conspiracies here would make a certain subreddit proud.

I would be more likely to believe that's its a combination of bad hardware and bad software . I'm going to give it one more shot and see what happens cause the XR doesn't really interest me at all. When fieldtest mode shows a -30 difference between a XS and Iphone7 side by side I have got to also question why this hasn't found it's way to more media outlets.

That’s what I was thinking also. It seems like there has to be a bad component it some phones but it’s compounded by software issues.

Even in an area where your X was barely hanging onto a signal? Was it the Qualcomm or Intel?

I didn't think about checking that yesterday when I ran the tests. This morning they're both using phys_cell_id 285 and both are on band 66. I have noticed that the X seems to prefer band 13 over 66 initially but eventually shifts over, while the XS always goes straight to 66 and stays there.

At any rate, the results are better as far as speeds, which is strange to me since I streamed music on the drive in using the XS and it buffered many times whereas the X never does.

Here are some fresh tests with that info in mind - it should be noted that I did receive a carrier update on the XS to 33.1 last night (and the X is on the same version).

XS: 19.2Mb / 2.61Mb ping 44ms
XS: 22.3Mb / 1.07Mb ping 38ms
XS: 18.9Mb / 0.48Mb ping 26ms

X: 10.21Mb /1.21Mb ping 30ms
X: 9.66Mb / 0.51Mb ping 33ms
X: 8.64Mb / 0.39Mb ping 22ms

So the plot thickens....lol

I don’t know about him, but I came from a Qualcomm X and it would frequently lose lte and not recover until I toggled airplane mode on and off. This was in my shop with a lot of machinery and on t-mobile. At the time, I figured it had something to do with the jailbreak I had and I never complain to apple because I wanted to continue having a jailbreak. It was very annoying, but I lived with the pain. With this phone, I’ve found it holds a weak signal much better than my x did and seems to recover better. So far, I couldn’t be happier. On a side note, my iPad Pro 10.5” has always had the WiFi issue where it loses signal, and I have to go into settings and reconfigure it. Toggling airplane mode doesn’t work and iOS 12.0.1 didn’t fix this. I think the theory of this being a hardware and a software issue might a good one.

12.1 fixed the wifi issue around 5ghz and 2.4 wifi. The new Beta #3 seems to dramatically fix my LTE issues.
The new setup now performs better than my old Qualcomm X. If it had launched like this 2 weeks ago- I doubt I'd have noticed much as the signal re-acquisation issue and weak coverage issue seems greatly ameliorated with new beta. I think the reason media isn't covering it anymore is it's not an issue.

Too bad for Qualcomm too as I'm sure they'd like to make hay about this and now can't.

I have had the same issue with the X. Mine was just replaced so maybe this one will be different but not sure. I may have noticed it reconnects, but don’t remember. If Apple can get this fixed and there’s tons of evidence it’s better than the A1865 X, I would be tempted to upgrade due to the camera but as of now, I feel safer staying where I’m at. My X takes amazing pictures so it’s definitely not a big temptation. It would be nice for Apple to fix the reconnection issue. My 7 Plus did the same thing.

I have to ask, do you live in the Atlanta area? I have a cell ID 285 on band 66 near my house.
