Whereas I had the same smearing experience with the units displayed at Best Buy, last night I checked my first generation iPad Pro 12.9", updated to IOS 16.1. Pleasant surprise, no smearing whatsoever, not in the slightest. So, I guess, this is an issue with the newest displays only.

Why is that? Thought it was for sure a software bug and it’s fixed in the newest beta right now…?

Was dark mode on and Night Shift on?

Yes, I made sure everything was on. I cannot tell what type of display this old 12.9" has but, it is crystal clear no matter how fast or slow I scroll text.

As far as has been reported here this was only affecting the M1 and M2 models. I had checked my wife’s 2018 3rd gen and there wasn’t the same issue. The issue has now been fixed on my M2 on the current beta as has also been reported here.

Good to know. I returned every M2 that I tried, and still have an M1 which is returnable. But I was able to find a deeply discounted M2 at Walmart (pricing error which was honoured), which was too good to pass up, so now the M1 must go back. So I am happy to hear that I might only have to put up with this issue for a few more weeks

Or...you could have just tried a little patience and read what people were saying here about it being a software bug.

Fair enough - admittedly my patience for dealing with these issues is pretty limited, even more so given the price of the device. And maybe it shouldn’t matter that getting the M2 device for a steep discount in the end changed the balance of what I am willing to tolerate (especially in the context of several people now reporting that the issue is fixed in the upcoming release, although I have to see it with my own eyes to be sure), but I guess each person weighs these factors differently, and that’s how things balanced out for me.

I can confirm. Going to send my iPad m2 back to Apple and will get a replacement because of a different problem. I checked my 16.0 and it has no problem. Updated to newest version (not beta) and no the screen is yellow while scrolling…. Definitely a software bug

I read through this thread and want to thank you all. I created an account just to post this. I am on an M2 11” iPad Pro and was being driven mad by the motion blurring everyone has been talking about here. This was one of the only places that talked about it and affirmed I’m not crazy LOL.

I installed the 16.2 alpha beta update and sure enough it fixed the motion blurring. The nightmare is over.

It's looking like I was wrong, then. (Well, about there being a bug at least.) Curious to know more now that the public beta is out. I also recently saw my first mention of this issue outside of this thread. They seem to suggest the issue only affects their M2 iPad Pro and not their Air 5, presumably on the same OS version. They also describe "off-axis effects," which I haven't seen mentioned here.

How extremely strange that seemingly so few people were affected by or noticed the bug, if it was indeed so as is looking to be the case.

The newest beta(4) of 16.2 continues to be free of the smearing issue. Since a fair number of people may not use night shift, True Tone, and dark mode at the same time not all would have noticed this issue. I have seen it reported by owners, including myself, of the M1 iPP 12.9s As well as a large number of owners of, again including me, the M2 models. But fortunately the software fix is still working and I would expect 16.2 to be released next week.

I would stay away (if possible) from iPadOS 16 for a while (at least until .5 release), unless we’re all happy becoming beta tester.

So far the smearing while scrolling was the only noticeable iPadOS issue I had. It only occurred with 16.1 and now fixed in 16.2. 16.5 might bring other unpleasant surprises. I’d enjoy this now while we have it.

I can also confirm that this latest beta solves the text color issue and significantly reduces the smearing of text on both my M1 and M2 iPad Pros. TrueTone was always the common denominator when I saw those issues.
Yeah I just turned off True Tone it’s a lot better than my 2018 iPad Pro and after the Update with True Tone off I get no noticeable smearing when scrolling. On my 11” M2 iPad Pro.

All good here too. I was one of the ones who reverted back to 15.7 until today. I was reluctant to upgrade until I saw all the positive reports here. Thanks for reporting in.

I found this thread after searching for my particular problem. I have a brand new M2 12.9 that has a pronounced green shift when scrolling white text on a black background. I first noticed it when reading and in the Apple website which has a lot of white on black graphics. I felt that there was something off with the display immediately. It looks fine with a static image but seems confused and presents eye strain with video. I notice some slight jelly scrolling, which I had not seen on the old M1 Pro.

If I do the skanskew test at testufo.com the white lines go to a pale green blue. It looks awful next to an M1 12.9 Pro.

I'm running the latest iPadOS 16.6 and had tried the 17 beta but no difference. Truetone or Nightshift make no difference either.

This issue was fixed for most of us in 16.2. I’ve not had any such issues on my M2 since then. Both my wife and I have M2 12.9 with what I regard as perfect displays. If you’re having noticeable display issues and you’re within the return window I would return it and purchase another one. If outside the return window try to get Apple Care to replace it. You can take it to an Apple Store to show them and get it replaced.

I went to that site and looked at the scan test and see a slight bluing or greening of the white lines but not the blurring I see in your video. The line remain clear and distinct but do become slightly bluish. But that doesn’t translate to any video issues when using our iPads.
